QUESTIONNAIRE-CHAPTER 2:

1)

2) According to behaviourism, language development is described as the acquisition

of a set habits, so it is assumed that a person who learn a second language applies
or starts off with the habits associated with the first language. These habits interfere
with those needed for a second language and new habits must be formed.

3) The behaviourists see errors as habits of the first language that interfere with the
acquisition of the second language. The CAH (contrastive analysis hyphotesis)
explains that there are similitudes between the two languages and where there are
differences, the learner will have difficulties. It isn’t only about the influence, but
about the systematic attempt of the learner to use knowledge that the learner already
possesses in learning a new language.

4) The restructuring phenomenon in the cognitive theory

5) The author of the creative construction theory is Stephen Krashen wich refers to
the fact that when children acquire a language they don’t need to read or write but
rather the acquisition takes place when student read and listen to samples of the
language they understand.

6) The monitor hyphotesis explains how learners act in the acquisition of a second
language. Explained that the learners can change, polish and correct what they have
produced in the acquired system (wich acts to initiate the speaker’s utterances and is
responsible for fluency and intitutive judgments about correctness) trough the use of
monitor for learning system. Krashen maintains that three circumstances must be
met for the use of the monitor to be effective: sufficient time, greater attention to form
that meaning and knowledge of the rule.

The affective filter hyphotesis explains that factors such as motivation or anxiety
can affect or favor the process of acquiring and learning a second language.
Krashen stated that an student highly motivated or with confidence is in better
conditions to succeed in second language acquisition.

7) The difference between acquisition and learning:

Acquisition: it is an automatic process in wich we engage in meaningful interaction
in the second language without paying attention to the form. For acquisition to occur
there must be a need for communication and interaction with the language. For
Krashen, acquisition is the most important process because only acquired language
wich is readily available for natural and fluent communication.
Learning: it is a conscious process due to the formal knowledge of the language to
be acquired, it is a process of study and attention to form and error correction.
