Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity
A. ENGAGEMENT
1. Preliminary Activities
a. Opening Prayer

Everybody, please stand. The learners will stand.

opening prayer?

b. Greetings/Energizer
“Good morning, V-Aguinaldo.” Pupils will sing the
“Good Morning-Greeting-Routine Song”
(Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)

Good morning, good morning,

let's start our day;
In fifth grade, we'll learn and play;
With friends beside us, we'll stand tall,
Learning together, we'll give our all! Good
morning, good morning,
let's start our day;
We'll make the most of every day.

pieces of paper or any litter near your
place, and put it in your pocket or bag
for the meantime, then arrange your
desks.”

“Ok, you may now be seated.”

d. Checking of Attendance
“Let us check who’s here and whose Learners will call out their class codes to
not today by saying your class code inform their teacher of their presence.
starting with B1.”

“That’s great. I’m glad that you are

here today, because we are going to
discuss a new and exciting lesson.”

e. Routine Song
“Ok, everybody, it’s time to sing the Learners will sing the Routine Song.
SCIENCE SONG.”

f. Classroom Management
“Before we move forward, let's go
over the rules to follow during our
lesson."

1- Remain silent.

2- Sit properly.

3- Listen.

4- Focus.

5- Raise hand to speak.

Ok, I’m looking forward that you’ll

follow those rules.

2. Review
“So, let’s have a review of our
previous lesson.”

“What was our lesson yesterday?”

“Well said. I guess you are now ready
to learn a new lesson.”

3. Unlocking of Unfamiliar/Important
Terms
“Now, for you to easily understand
our topic for today, let us unlock the
meaning of some unfamiliar, yet
important words that we will
encounter during our discussion.”

“Will you read the first word, ? “illuminate”

“Illuminate means to shine, to light,

to brighten, or to make something
more visible.”

“Read the next word, . “stage”

“Stage is a specific phase or step in

a series of events.”

“For the third word, . “cycle”

“Cycle is a repeated pattern of

events.”

“Will you read the next three words, “ Quarter, Crescent, and Gibbous”
.

“These words refer to the shape/size

of the moon: Quarter is when it is
exactly half in size/shape; Crescent
is when it is less than half or smaller
than the quarter; while Gibbous
means more than half or larger than
the quarter.”

“Did you get it class?”

“Ok, now let’s proceed to the last “Waxing and Waning”

two words. Kindly read, .”

“These words are related to the

moon’s illumination and appearance.
Waxing means getting brighter and
appears to be bigger as days go by,
while waning is becoming less
illuminated and appears to be
smaller.”
“Did you get it class?”

“That’s great! Now, everybody read “Illuminate, stage, cycle, quarter, crescent,
once again the following words:” gibbous, waxing, waning.”

“Good job!”

4. Motivation
“Now, I have something to show you.
May I request everyone to come in
front one by one and look inside the
box? Once your turn is done, please
return to your seat and remain quiet.”

“Let’s start with the girls in column 1.”

Learners will take turn looking inside the
box.
“Do you know what is inside the box?”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
“What is inside the box?”
“A moon model, Ma’am.”
“Yes. It is a model of the moon.”

“Who among you watches the moon

during the night?”

“What do you feel when looking at the Some learners are expected to raise their
moon?” hands.

“Will you share some of your Learners will share their feelings/insight.
thoughts, ideas, views, and even
beliefs regarding the moon?”

“Well said, kids. Thanks for those who

shared their thoughts.”

B. EXPLORATION
a. Demonstration/Simulation
"Now, I have here a working model of
the moon. By rotating the pin, you are
able to see the different phases of the
moon."

“Start by pulling the stick slowly,

observing how the appearance of the
moon changes as it moves through its
orbit."

“So, who wants to try? Learners will volunteer.

“What did you notice about the
appearance of the moon"
"Can you identify specific phases of Learners will answer.
the moon that you observed?"

“Very good. You really are good

observers.”

C. EXPLANATION
a. Presentation of the Lesson
“Now, we are going to talk about the
moon and its eight phases.”

“The moon orbits around the Earth,

which makes it appear differently
each night, from a thin crescent to a
full circle, as we observe it from
Earth.”

“The moon's changing appearance is

due to the sunlight reflecting off its
surface as it moves in its orbit around
the Earth, creating the different
phases we see from night to night.”

“The moon has primary phase and

secondary phase. The primary phase
consists of the new moon, first
quarter, full moon, and last quarter;
while the secondary phase consists of
the waxing crescent, waxing gibbous,
waning gibbous, and waning
crescent.”

b. Discussion
“What is the first phase of the moon?”

“What is a new moon?” “New Moon.

New moon is when the moon is all dark

and located between the earth and the
sun.
“That’s right. And during a new moon,
the moon shows total darkness and
we cannot see it.”

“How about the second phase?”

“Yes. What happens during a waxing “Waxing Crescent Moon.”

crescent?”

Waxing crescent moon is when the

moon is in between the appearance of the
first quarter moon and new moon.

“The moon is less than one-half

illuminated by the sun, but less than
one quarter illuminated.”

“The third phase is the First Quarter

Moon. What is a First Quarter
Moon?”

The first quarter moon is one-half

illuminated by the sun.

“That’s right. The appearance of the

First Quarter Moon that we see is half
of the lighted side of the moon.”
“Waxing gibbous moon.’’
“What phase comes after the first
quarter moon?

“Correct. What is a waxing gibbous

moon?” Waxing gibbous moon when most of
the portion of the moon is visible in the
sky.
“The moon is more than one-half of
the illuminated by the sun but not
completely illuminated.”

“What’s next?

“Full Moon.”
“Will you read what a Full
Full moon is when the entire portion of
Moon is,?
the moon is seen in the sky.

“Yes. During a Full Moon, we can

see that the whole side of the Moon
facing the earth became lighted.”

“Okay let’s proceed to the next

phase.”

“What is the next phase?”

“Waning Gibbous.”
“When does a Waning Gibbous
Phase occurs?” The waning gibbous moon when most
of portion of the moon is visible in the sky
but, this time it gets smaller every night.

“During this phase, the moon is

more than one-half illuminated by
the sun but not completely
illuminated.”

“Next phase that comes after a

waning gibbous is the third quarter.”

“Kindly read what a third

quarter moon is, .
Third Quarter moon is one-half
illuminated by the sun.

“That’s right. The appearance that we

see is during the third quarter is the
half lighted side of the moon just like
the first quarter moon.”

“And for the last phase that

completes the moon cycle is the
waning crescent.

“When does waning crescent takes

place?”
The waning crescent moon starts when
the moon appears to be getting smaller
each night.

“The moon in this picture, shows a

small portion is lighted and it is almost
faded.”

“Those are the phases of the moon.”

“How many phases does the moon “There are 8 phases of the moon.”
have?”

“What are those?” New Moon

Waxing Crescent Moon
First Quarter Moon
Waxing Gibbous Moon
Full Moon
Waning Gibbous Moon
Third Quarter Moon

“Good job. Did you understand the

difference among each phases?”
“Well, then I guess you are now ready
for an activity.”
