MOON MODEL
Science Skills: Observing,
Communicating
Time Frame: 15 minutes
Materials: Globe Flashlight Small ball

What to Do:

1. Place the materials on the table.

2. Arrange your chairs around the table.
3. Turn off the lights in the room. Make
sure that the room is dark enough so as
to enhance the light coming from the
flashlight.
4. Turn on the flashlight. Be sure to
focus its light on the globe.
5. Turn the ball slowly around the globe.
DO NOT MOVE THE FLASHLIGHT.
6. Observe what portion of the ball
reflects light.
7. On a piece of paper, draw the lighted
portion of the ball in the different
positions.

Let’s see the different positions of the

lighted portion of the ball that you draw

“What do you think the lighted portion

of the ball represent?”

“The lighted portion of the ball shows

the different shapes of the moon or what
we call the “Phases of the Moon.” And “ We have no idea, Ma’am.”
that is our topic for today. “

D. Unlocking of Difficulties
Discussing
new Satellite – a celestial or artificial body
concepts orbiting the earth or another planet
and
practicing Phases – a distinct period or stage in a
series of events or a process of change or
new skills
development Crescent-less than half-lit
leading to

assessment size, moon’s illuminated area is
#1 increasing

Gibbous- more than half-lit

Waning – means shrinking or

decreasing, its visible surface area is
getting smaller

Vocabulary Iraya’s Vernacular

Waxing pasikat
Waning patunaw

Have you notice that the moon keeps

changing its shape?

It starts as a thin crescent which grows

bigger every night until it is a bright ball
in the sky.

The moon is the Earth’s only natural

satellite. It is a huge, heavy ball of rocks. “Yes, Ma’am.”
The moon does not produce its own
light.

It reflects light from the sun and throws

back the light to us. The moon revolves
continuously around the earth. One
complete turn of the moon around the
earth takes about 27 1/3 to 29 1/2 days.
Since the moon is revolving around the
Earth, the amount of light it reflects from
the sun varies as it changes its position.
It’s what we call the Phases of the Moon.
“None, Ma’am. We only
“Do you have any idea about the phases know that it changes its
of the moon?” shape.”

Here’s what the Phases look like. The

Sun, Earth and Moon along with their
movements causes the phases of the
moon.

It begins at New Moon. It is very dark

and nearly invisible. Because the
illuminated part of the moon is facing
away from the Earth.

After 3 and half days the moon has

moved 45º and it is Waxing Crescent.

Waxing means that the sunlight is

getting larger and crescent is the shape.

In 7 days the moon has now traveled 90º

and it is First Quarter.
In additional 3.5 days it has now
travelled 135º and it is Waxing Gibbous.
Gibbous is the shape and remember
waxing means the light portion is
growing.

After 14 days since New Moon, the

moon has now travelled 180º and it is
Full Moon.

After another 3.5 days the moon is now

at Waning Gibbous. Waning means the
light is getting smaller

After 21 days the moon has now traveled

270º and it is Last Quarter. The light is
now on the left.

After 24 days the moon is now at

Waning Crescent

Finally, after 27 days the moon is now

back at New Moon. And the cycle will
start over again.

E. Differentiated Group Activity:

Discussing “Now, I will divide you into 3 groups for
new your group activity. But before that can

with our group.
#2
3. Listen to others and respect each
other ideas.
4. Minimum health protocols should be
followed at all times.
5. Be careful in using sharp objects like
scissors.
6. Once you finished your work, clap 5
times. (To know whose group finished
first.)
7 Finally, think a good way in presenting
your work in front of the class.

“ Now class, I want to inform you that

you will be guided with a rubric so you
can produce a very good output.”

GROUP 1: PHASES OF THE MOON

SPIN WHEEL

1. Cut the bond paper or colored paper

into circle, paste it on the center and
write the name of the phases of the
moon.
2. Paste the moon cut-outs on the
circular card board.
3. Place the other circular card board on
the top of other card board. Then trace
the shape of the moon and its name.
4. Cut the part that you trace. Be careful
in using sharp objects.
5. Put the pin at the middle. And try to
rotate/spin your work. (You can add
designs to make it more attractive
GROUP 2: OREO COOKIE MOON
PHASES ACTIVITY

Procedure:
1. Gently separate the oreos so all filling
is on one side. (Be careful as you
separate your oreos, full moon and new
moon are already done when you pull
apart your oreo.
2. Scrape off filling using a spoon to
resemble each phase of the moon.
3. Place oreo phases in the plate (correct
order) in relation to the Earth and Sun

GROUP 3: MOON PHASES SLIDER

F. “To further enhance your knowledge,

mastery
“I will give you Phases of the Moon
Worksheet. Then you will paste the
moon cut-outs here in correct order. And
write the name of the phases on the
box.”

G. Finding “How does the appearance and “Ma’am, it affects our way of
practical nonappearance of the moon affect our life through giving us some
applications way of life?” light when night is dark,
of concepts especially us, Mindoreños.”
and skills in
daily living “Very Good!”

How do you feel when there is no moon “Night seems very sad,
at night time? Ma’am, when there is no
such light from the moon.”

“Excellent!”

What are the Filipino ethnical beliefs and “Ma’am the story of
myths about the moon? Bakunawa, the moon eating
monster from Bicol.”
“Very Good!

Any other answer? Since it’s a belief,

there is no wrong answer. Go on don’t be “Some belief says that every

2.Why does the moon look different “Ma’am, because the moon
every night? continuously revolves around
the Earth”

Very well said!

You are really doing a good job!
I. Evaluating Read carefully and choose the letter of
learning your answer.
1. Aqua watched the Moon from her
bedroom window for one week. She
noticed that, at first, it was round and
fully lit. At the end of the week, the
Moon was lit on the left side and looked
like it had been cut in half. How do
scientists describe this phase?

B. wasting
D. warming

2. If you see a new moon today, when

will you probably see another new moon
again?
A. after 3 days
B. after 4 weeks
C. after 4 months
D. after 2 months

3. The phase when the entire lighted

portion of the moon is seen in the sky.

A. new moon
C. last quarter
B. full moon
D. first quarter

4. In which phase does the moon appear

dark? A. first quarter
C. last quarter
B. full moon
D. new moon

5. What causes the phases of the moon to

change each night?

A. The season of the year determines

the phase of the Moon.
B. The closer the Moon is to Earth, the
more light the Moon reflects.
C. The Moon changes its actual shape
throughout the course of the month.
D. The alignment between the Earth,
Moon, and Sun determines the amount
