LESSON 10: Color Harmony

Color harmony refers to the quality of aesthetically pleasing

combinations of colours. Those combinations create pleasing contrasts and
harmonious consonances.
The Color Wheel

Primary Colors- the origins of all colors, while there are thousands and
thousands of colors in the world, all of them came from
red, blue and yellow.

Secondary Colors- formed when two equivalent amounts of primary colours

are combined. If you add the same amount of yellow and blue you'll have
green, equal parts of red and blue you'll have violet, and you'll have orange
when you combine red and yellow.

Intermediate Colors- created by adding two equal amounts of primary

and secondary colours. For example, you'll have yellow green if you
combine equal parts of yellow (primary color) and green (secondary colour)
Note that in the color wheel yellow-green is between yellow and green.

Intermediate Colors are:

Yellow + green- yellow- green Red + violet= red- violet
Blue + green= blue- green Red + orange= red- orange
Blue + violet= blue- violet Blue + orange= blue- orange

Pure colors - are the primary , secondary and intermediate colors, as they do not
include white, black and gray.
Tints. These are made lighter when pure colors are mixed with white.
Example, if you add white to red, you get pink. Pink, in other words, is a
tint of red. The whiter you add, the lighter the pink becomes.

Shades. These are made darker when the pure colors are combined with the black.
If you add black to red, for example, you have maroon, a shade of red. The
blacker you add, the darker it will be.

Grayed colors. Some of the colors we use in clothes are gray instead of vivid, pure
wheel colors. Gray shades are often referred to as "strong colors" or "solid
colors"."Colors dull" The grayer you apply, the duller the color is.

Naturals. Are black, white and gray. With another and with all other colours,
they look fine. The more gray shades are, the more it can harmonize
with different colors.

Qualities of Colors

Hue- it is the name of a color.

Value- Refers to the lightness of the shadow or its hue or darkness.
Intensity- Means the brightness of a color or dullness.

Color Schemes

The beauty of any combination of colors depend on how well the colors harmonize.
Colors may tend to blend together in order to harmonize.
1. One- color harmony (monochromatic color)- The simplest
color scheme to adopt is one that uses various values and intensities
of the same hue.

2. Adjacent color harmony- or analogous color harmony. Because they are

on the color wheel near to each other, neighbor color harmony.

3. Complementary Color Harmony- They are the opposite colors in the
color wheel

a. Complementary colors- directly opposite in color wheel.

Example, red and green.

b. Split complementary colors-

It uses the two colors adjacent to its complement,
in addition to the base color.

4. Triadic color scheme- Uses colors round the color wheel that are
evenly spaced.
