Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Electrical Installation and Maintenance Grade 9 Module on PVC

Offset Bend.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Vico Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the Electrical Installation and Maintenance 9 Module on PVC Offset

Bend. The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often
used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create
and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies
and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning material while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectation - These are what you will be able to know after completing the
lessons in the module

Pre-test - This will measure your prior knowledge and the concepts to be
mastered throughout the lesson.

Recap - This section will measure what learnings and skills that you
understand from the previous lesson.

Lesson- This section will discuss the topic for this module.

Activities - This is a set of activities you will perform.

Wrap Up- This section summarizes the concepts and applications of the
lessons.

Valuing-this part will check the integration of values in the learning

competency.

Post-test - This will measure how much you have learned from the entire
module.

5
EXPECTATION

Upon completion of this lesson, you are expected to:

1. Describe the uses of PVC offset bend

2. Demonstrate the procedures in making a PVC offset bend
3. Observe occupational health and safety precautions in bending PVC conduit.

PRE–TEST

Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct word/s to complete the statement.
Select your answer on the box.

heat gun height second middle 30x60 triangle

1. Measure the __________ of the wooden box as it serves as the obstruction.

2. Use your ____________ and chalk to draw the height of obstruction on the
floor.

3. Mark off the PVC 100 mm from the edge. I would be the ____________ of the
offset’s first bend.

4. Measures 200 mm from your first marker and put a ____________ mark.

5. Apply heat to the PVC conduit using a____________.

RECAP

In our preceding lesson about bending 90° PVC elbow, can you give the
procedure in applying heat to the PVC?

6
LESSON

PVC Offset Bend

The offset bend is one of the most common bends made in electrical conduit.
This is a method used to shift a conduit run a fixed distance to one side, up or down.
It is very unlikely that the conduit will be positioned in a straight line along the entire
distance needed. It is used when the PVC conduit enters an electrical box or when
the conduit crosses an uneven surface

PREPARE A PVC OFFSET BEND

Tools :
1. Steel meter stick/Straight edge
2. 30 x 60 triangle
3. Pull and push rule
4. Wet rug

Equipment:
1. Heat gun

Materials:
1. Pencil or chalk
2. PVC pipe

Personal Protective Equipment:

1. Gloves
2. Respirator

7
Preparatory Activity:
1. Prepare the required tools, materials and equipment.
2. Wear proper PPE.
3. Use a standard respirator and adequate ventilation to protect yourself
from this toxin.

Remember: the fume produced by PVC when heated is very dangerous.

Vinyl Chloride is a toxic carcinogen which has been proven to cause
angiosarcoma, a deadly primary liver cancer.

Procedure:

1. Measure the height of obstruction. Let

us use this wooden box in this situation.
In this case, the height of obstruction is
about 70 mm.

2. Use your 30x60 triangle and chalk to

draw the height of obstruction on the
floor as shown in the illustration. This
will lead you to the height of your offset
bend.

3. Now you have two lines as shown in the

illustration.

4. Mark off the PVC 100 mm from the edge.

I would be the middle of the offset’s first
bend.

8
5. Measures 200 mm from your first
marker and put a second mark.

6. Apply heat to the PVC conduit using a

heat gun. Spread the heat between
your markers. Turn over the PVC
conduit to apply the heat evenly, sway
the heat gun back and forth to avoid
kinks during bending.

7. Switch off the heat gun and bend the PVC

gently to achieve the desired shape using
the reference drawn on the floor if the
conduit is softened.

8. After you achieve the desired shape, wipe

the PVC conduit with a wet rug to harden
immediately. Your bend should look like
this.

9
ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY 5.1
Directions: Draw an Offset bend using the dimension given. Use proper
instruments for this drawing activity.

10
ACTIVITY 5.2

Directions: Arrange the step-by-step procedures in making an offset bend by

putting a number (1-8) on box beside the picture. Then write down a brief
description about the picture.
