CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The geographic make-up, rich cultural history and diversity of Nepal makes it one of the most
preferred destinations around the world (Baniya, et al., 2016). Apart from pilgrimages and
destinations with religious significance, travelers seek to explore destinations with natural
resources which often get unexplored by most (Shrestha, et al., 2020). However, the inadequate
infrastructure is among few factors that hamper Nepalese tourism. Despite having diverse natural
resources, eccentric culture, and prosperous history, the Nepalese tourism industry is yet to
exponential growth with merely over 1300 registered hotels and existing employment trends.

Tourism has great impact on economy as it creates employment and earning through engagement
of local resources and domestic venue enrichment (Mapingure, et al., 2019). Currently, domestic
tourism is increasing in Nepal rapidly. Post pandemic effect still has a grasp on tourism industry.
However, the digital accessibility improved among Nepalese, leading to hotels and hospitality
service providers having virtual offices. Nepal Visit Year 2020 was expected to be a grand success
and the Nepal Tourism Board expected the inflow of 2 million tourists (Badal, et al., 2019). Badal,
et al., (2019) asserts that tourism has massive economic significance, particularly in this modern
world, for it is a building structure of the economic mechanism and plays a role of catalyst for the
infrastructural development and modernization of the economy and country.

1.2 Profile of the Organization

The study focuses on the Nepalese youths and their tendency toward domestic tourism. Domestic
tourism is an important antecedent for the viability of the tourism industry. It will not only create
additional revenue sources for the tourism enterprise and the nation but also help to promote the
tourism infrastructures that would further make the sector more attractive to the international
tourists. Youths make up significant portion of the tourists in a country and it becomes essential to
determine the factors that motivate internal tourism among the youths. Thus, the current study is
conducted to determine the underlying factors that motivate the youths for domestic tourism.

1
1.3 Problem Statement
Tourism is an integral part of an economy (Todorović, et al., 2016). A thriving tourism industry
indicates national economic growth (Moisa, 2010). Yuan and McDonald (1990) stated that the
willingness to travel and engage in tourism activities differs among the tourists in different
countries. The current study therefore becomes essential to conduct in the context of Nepal as the
perception and the motivations of the Nepalese youths is certainly different from that of the youths
in other countries.

Upon these grounds, the study aims to answer the following questions:
a. What are the factors affecting Nepalese youths toward domestic tourism?
b. Do interests in people and culture, adventure and sports motivate Nepalese youths towards
domestic tourism?
c. Do impact of social media and affordability influence the Nepalese youths toward domestic
tourism?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the research is to determine the factors affecting Nepalese youths toward
domestic tourism. The specific objectives are as follows:
a. To identify factors influencing attitude of Nepalese youths toward domestic tourism.
b. To test whether interest in people & culture and adventure & sport motivate Nepalese youth
toward domestic tourism.
c. To determine the impact of social media and affordability on the behavior of Nepalese
youths toward domestic tourism.

1.5 Limitations
The study has certain limitations imposed by time and resource constraints.

i) Cross-sectional study: The study disregards longitudinal data and considers the data
collected at a certain point and represents the analysis of the snapshot of behavior rather
than the trends and changes of behavior.

ii) Sample: A total of 120 respondents participated in the study. The researcher used
snowball sampling method and retrieved data of 120 selected youths from all over the

2
Nepal. However, given the size of the sample, the conclusions might not be
representative of the population.

iii) Predictor variables: Several different factors affect consumer behavior toward domestic
tourism. However, this study selects only a few predictors based on the reiteration and
their pertinence.

LITERATURE REVIEW

The literature considered in this study are sourced from both national and international corpus.
Theoretical review supports the alternative hypothesis and empirical review offer insights into
factors that affect the attitude toward domestic tourism. This chapter comes to close with research
gap and conceptual framework.

The first chapter introduces the Nepalese tourism industry and gives a thorough overview of
youth’s trend in domestic tourism in Nepal. It mentions the questions that the research findings
would answer and also the objectives that would be attaining which would complete the research.
The hypotheses of the study are proposed thorough the review of literature, both theory and
empirical findings.

Literature review is divided under four heads- theoretical review, empirical literature review, the
research gap, and conceptual framework. The theoretical review incorporates theories and
principles that are related to the topic of the research. Particularly, the study considers existing
theories relating to consumer attitude, and customer satisfaction to identify the key factors that
affect domestic tourism among Nepalese Youths. Empirical literature review is conducted to
familiarize with the existing works: dissertations, journals, articles and so forth to filter the
variables, research model and statistical techniques and replicate the design to attain desired
results. The variables and methodologies used in previous researches, and various empirical
studies from Nepal and other countries are summarized in this chapter. Based on the empirical
review, evidence of the limitations or gaps in the existing research are bestowed which justifies
the necessity to conduct the current the current study.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

The study used a descriptive research design. Quantitative cross-sectional data were collected and
were analyzed descriptively as such data can unravel about phenomena that cannot be immediately
viewed. Specifically, a descriptive survey was used as it is a systematic, non-experimental method
for obtaining information from a sample to characterize the features of a broader population.
Descriptive research design is best suited for determining and characterizing characteristics of the
examined variables and allows questionnaires to be used.

3.2 Population
The population is the large unit for which generalizations have to be formed. The population of
interest is the population that lies in the age-group 16-40. As per the 2015 national youth policy
data, youths constituted 40.68 percentage of the total population. As of 2020, Nepal’s population
has reached over 29.19 million. Thus, the population for this study would be approximately 12
million.

3.3 Survey Questionnaires

The set constitutes questions that are precise, succinct, relevant and appropriate given the purpose
of the present study. The first section constitutes the mix of multiple-choice questions regarding
the demographic information of the respondents. The succeeding section is composed of Likert
five scale close ended format statements that respondents could rate as options: strongly disagree
(i) disagree (ii) neither (iii) agree (iv) and strongly agree (v) and express their opinion.
