Week 02
1. Adjectives ending in -ing vs. –ed

a) There are big differences between the adjectives that end in –ing and the ones that
end –ed. For example, I could say:
 “My holiday was relaxing.” or “I felt really relaxed.”

o Adjectives ending in -ed describe how a person feels. That means that they
describe feelings. For example:
 Yesterday was my last exam. Today I am exhausted.
 My mother is interested in that new book.
 The girls weren’t bored about the story.
 They felt frightened during the horror film.
 She was really surprised because she won the competition.
 Last year I was in Italy. I felt so excited

o Adjectives ending in –ing describe the thing that makes a person feel
something. For example:
 The film was really boring.
 Please, don’t do it! It was frightening.
 The books were interesting.
 The English lessons weren’t boring.
 Yesterday I won the race. It was exciting!

2. Verb to Be - Past simple statements


 The past simple of the verb to be is "was" for the singular subject and "were" for the
plural subject, and we can use them for names, ages, feelings, nationalities, and
professions.
o For the affirmative use:
 “I was at home.”, or “He was at home.”
 “We were tired.”, or “They were tired.”
 When I was eleven years old, I got a place in a baseball team.
 She was in Mexico last year. There were exciting and relaxing places
o For the negative use, we say:
 “I wasn’t home.”, or “He wasn’t home.”
 “We weren´t tired.”, or “They weren’t tired.”
 My classmates and I weren’t always excited during breaktime
 The use of there was and there were.
o We use there was for the singular form, in affirmative and negative:
 There was a pencil on the table.
 here wasn’t a museum in the city.
o We use there were for the plural form, and in affirmative and negative:
 There were some dictionaries on the desk.
 There weren’t any interesting places in town

3. Past simple with regular verbs
 When we use regular verbs in the Past Simple, we add -ED at the end of the verb. It
works with all subject pronouns.
o For example:
 "He played soccer."
 "She cooked lomo saltado."
 "I danced salsa."
 "You watched TV."
 There are some spelling rules we need to remember.
o If a verb ends in -e, you only add -d.
 Like "agree" becomes "agreed," "like" becomes "liked," and
"escape" becomes "escaped."
o If a verb ends in a vowel and a consonant, the consonant is usually doubled
before -ed.
 So, "stop" becomes "stopped," and "plan" becomes "planned."
o And if a verb ends in a consonant and -y, you take off the y and add -ied.
 Like "try" becomes "tried," and "carry" becomes "carried."
 In negative sentences, we use the auxiliary verb "DID" and the base form of the
verb. "Did" is used with all subject pronouns.
o For example:
 "He didn't play soccer."
 "She didn't cook lomo saltado."

Alicia Mercado was born in 1995, She studied at school 2 years ago. She was the most
popular student in school. She once said that she got up at 5 a.m. to go to school and went
to sleep very late at night. She always had high grades in her favorite courses: History and
Language, but she didn't like basketball. I remember that she was very hard-working and
creative. He also organized fascinating school events. We all remember her as a very kind
and fun girl, but at contests she was often very serious.
