The Bayeux Tapestry is a 70-metre (230 ft.) long piece of cloth onto which more than 50
scenes depicting the wars between William the Conqueror and King Harold have been sewn.
The tapestry dates back 900 years and is in remarkable condition for its age. Strangely,
however, it is missing the last panel – the final scene of the story. For a long time, historians
thought the tapestry was made by nuns all over England, and then stitched together to form
the long work of art. However, more recently, this theory has been rejected. Experts believe
that the techniques used to stitch the tapestry are too consistent for it to have been done by
independent groups. Current thinking is that whilst the characters in the scenes certainly look
different, the similarities in technique point to one team of skilled craftsmen – or women –
producing the entire tapestry. Amongst the questions still surrounding the tapestry, perhaps
one that will never be answered is what its origins are. Some believe that William’s brother
commissioned the tapestry as a celebration of William’s achievements, but an alternative
theory has recently been put forward. That is, that the sister of the defeated Harold
commissioned the tapestry in order to distance herself from Harold and gain favour with
William. It’s possible that we will never know the answers for certain, but a little bit of
mystery perhaps makes works of art like this all the more fascinating.
