In a comparison and contrast essay, the writer compares two objects, problems,
things, or events, and discuss their similarities and differences.
Here are some sample essay exam prompts for comparison essays:

WRITING THE INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH
- Background information that introduces the 2 subjects and helps the reader
understand the purpose for comparing them.
- The thesis statement that tells the reader which two subjects the essay will
compare and the points of comparison. Note that sometimes writers do not state
the points of comparison in the thesis.

differ in one important way.
- While New York and London have some similarities and may be attractive to various
people depending on their lifestyles and preferences, they are greatly different,
especially in their climate, housing, and population.

WRITING THE CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH
- The concluding paragraph reminds the reader of the writer’s purpose for writing.
- The first sentence can restate the thesis statement in one sentence.
- It ends with a final comment. This comment tells the reader what writer has
learned or realized about the subjects by comparing them. The comment may be:
Advice: People should look forward to the freedom that they will have less debt.
A prediction: Businesses that offer both online and in-store options will continue to
grow.
A realization: It seems that it is important that people take time to get to know their
neighbors.
