INTRODUCTION
Education has a twofold function in our lives; it is a responsibility and an

opportunity that every individual should take. It molds us in many ways, from

personal growth to career preparation. Like every other milestone, education comes

with different stages that are meant to help develop and nurture our potential.

Elementary school usually lasts for six years, followed by high school for four years

of study, then senior high school takes two years, and lastly college, which may take

four years depending on the program.

In particular, college is seen as a major turning point in one’s educational path.

It is a stepping stone towards realizing dreams and aspirations. Here, students can

engage in specialized courses and pathways that are aligned with what they love

doing as well as their career goals. For instance, there are numerous possibilities, such

as practical fields including engineering, accounting, or nursing, but some students

choose history as their major.

It is not only about memorizing historical dates and famous names, but also

knowing what it means to own a bachelor’s degree in history (College Board, 2023).

It is not only for history teachers; this program equips one with skills that can be

utilized in other jobs. These abilities are critical thinking, which is the ability to think

about information in a careful way and solve problems. Moreover, people learn how

to do research analysis or how to find and understand information from various

sources. Further, this program will make you better at communicating both written

and spoken with others so as to put across your ideas more clearly.

Here's a question that many students considering a history major often ask:

How do these skills translate into real-world jobs after graduation? What kind of jobs

do history graduates get? Offering courses such as a Bachelor of Arts in History

provides a holistic view of education, promotes reflective practice, and equips

students and educators with the tools to adapt and improve teaching and learning

experiences.

There have been many studies that have shown that individuals who have

studied history can work in several different jobs (Ashworth & Garton, 2018). For

instance, employing critical thinking enables students to think outside the box and

generate solutions. Skills needed for conducting research are important for marketing,

law, and any other job that involves gathering and analyzing information. People must

be able to communicate effectively regardless of their profession; thus, they should be

good writers because writing is the best way to communicate ideas. There are many

careers where skills from a history degree can be applied.

Several universities in the Philippines offer a Bachelor of Arts in History

program, including Camarines Norte State College (CNSC), the University of Santo

Tomas (UST), the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP Diliman), De La Salle

University (DLSU), and Silliman University. These programs provide students with a

strong foundation in historical research, critical analysis, and writing. Students will

explore various historical periods, themes, and methodologies, gaining a deep

understanding of historical events and their impact on contemporary society.

In this study, we seek valuable insights on the lives of history graduates as

well as the efficacy of the history program. The results can then be used to improve

course content and assist students in reaching their career goals.

This study will concentrate on the graduates of the Bachelor of Arts in History

program at Camarines Norte State College (CNSC) between 2016 and 2020.
Importance of the Study

This historical study about the BA History Major will be beneficial to the

following: Camarines Norte State College (CNSC). By finding out what jobs

history graduates actually get, the college can improve the History program. This

could involve adding new classes or activities that better prepare students for the real

world. Maybe it's adding new computer skills or giving students a chance to get

practical work experience. History Students (Current and Future). This study is

like a career guide for history majors at CNSC. By seeing what past graduates do for a

living, current and future students can make smarter choices about their own careers.

Students can make well-informed judgments about their future jobs and choose

courses that are relevant to their goals by learning about previous graduates

experiences. This understanding can assist students bridge the gap between their

academic interests and their career goals. Teachers. This research helps history

teachers connect what they teach in class to the real world. By understanding what

skills employers want, teachers can make their lessons more practical and give

students the skills they need to succeed in any job, not just history. This could mean

teaching more about research, writing, and communication. Future Researchers.

This study will serve as a guide and basis for their research if they are going to

continue this tracer study for history majors. They will benefit and can help them with

their future research. CNSC Community. This study is important because it shows

CNSC Community the value of a history degree. It proves that history teaches skills

that are useful in many different jobs, not just teaching history. This can help change

the way people think about humanities degrees and show how important they are in

today's world.
Objectives of the Study

Generally, the objective of this study is to trace the employment status of

history major graduates from 2016–2020.

Specifically, the study aims (1) to know the graduates from 2016–2020 and their

respective jobs; (2) to determine that the program offerings of the Bachelor of Arts in

History are relevant to the graduates; and (3) to know the possible solutions to resolve

the employment mismatch of the History graduates.

Scope and Limitations

The scope of this study focuses on the history majors who graduated from

2016–2020 at Camarines Norte State College. The study will explore the status of

employment among history majors.

The study is limited to a specific 5-year period (2016–2020), and therefore, it may not

capture the earlier employment status of the history major graduates from 2021–

2024.

Time and Place of the Study

This study encompasses the period from 2016 to 2020. This would be

conducted at Camarines Norte State College (CNSC), located in F. Pimentel Avenue,

Daet, Camarines Norte. The duration of the study is from the 2nd semester academic

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
This chapter includes the ideas, finished thesis, generalizations or conclusions,

and methodologies, among others, that help to support the research study.

A Graduate Tracer Survey (GTS), Tutor, M et al. (2019), gathers information

on graduates' college experiences, including the skills they acquired, the caliber of

their education, and how these factors connect to employability. With the use of GTS,

we are able to shed light on the connection between a college education and labor

market results and develop strategies for the higher education sector. This time

around, we dig a little deeper and examine how college experience affects

engagement in society, politics, and overall life satisfaction. The findings of the fourth

Philippine Graduate Tracer Survey are presented in this paper. Graduates from AY

2009–2011 are included. 32.7% of the sample, or 11,547 graduates, were polled in

total. Several changes to research designs and administrative setups were piloted

during this GTS round with the goal of strengthening the CHED. The response rate

was impacted by a number of issues, but overall, it was a successful presentation of

the intended GTS implementation setup for upcoming rounds. The findings

demonstrate that graduates choose their bachelor programs based on their desire for

financial gain and professional progress. They specialize in a small number of

courses, and most of them are not high-paying, with the exception of nursing and IT-

related courses. The median time for graduates of schools without a professional

license required to start their first employment after graduation is five months. Those

who completed courses that required a license must wait a full year before beginning

their first job. Out of 100, only 86 are engaged in economic activity.

Cuadra, L. et al. (2019). Each educational institution wants to generate

highly qualified graduates who are competent and will eventually be able to compete
on a local and international level. An effective method for assessing the whereabouts

and performance of recent graduates in the workforce is a graduate tracer study. In

one of the Philippine public colleges, the purpose of this study was to keep tabs on its

graduates. In response to this survey, there were 1,983 graduates in all. An instrument

to collect data that was analyzed using percentages and frequencies was a structured

survey questionnaire. As a result of their recent graduation from the institution, the

majority of the graduates were found to be in their early 20s. Further, they were able

to obtain employment via a personal connection. The majority of alumni work in

fields connected to their individual degrees. One of the main advantages of the

undergraduate curriculum was its relevance to professional needs for the degree

program. Extracurricular activities and other optional classes were noted by the report

as areas that require development. The institution must prioritize student mobility,

credit transfers, quality assurance, and research clusters in order to align with the

ASEAN higher education system and enhance the current degree programs.

Pentang, J. et al. (2022) say graduates' employability reflects their great

education and relevant preparedness achieved through their individual degrees.

Higher education institutions may now reflect on the quality of their education while

also showcasing their graduates, thanks to tracer studies. Using the information above,

a tracer study was conducted at a public institution in the West Philippines to

ascertain the academic and demographic characteristics of teacher education

graduates from 2017 to 2020. It also determined what post-college courses they took,

their employment history, the value of their college education for their current jobs,

the challenges they faced in finding work, and suggestions for improving the teacher

preparation program. Eighty non-random samples were selected for the study using a

descriptive survey research approach, taking availability into consideration. The

Philippine Commission on Higher Education served as the survey's foundation, with

changes explained by findings from earlier research. The graduates of the teacher

education program had a high passion for teaching, according to the results. A greater

number of graduates passed the teacher licensure exams, attended graduate programs

for professional growth, and obtained honors and awards. They are also employable.

Additionally, the graduates' college training is applicable to their current jobs.

Additional challenges and issues were recognized, along with suggestions for

improving the teacher education program. These results can provide a starting point

for curriculum reviews and recommendations for further tracer research.

. Langay, P. et al. (2016), there is a growing demand in many nations for

higher education institutions to present empirical data demonstrating the professional

relevance of their curricula. In order to gather the necessary data, this study aimed to

follow the 2009–2013 Bachelor of Arts in History graduates from their original

educational institution to their location of employment or self-employment. It also

established the degree to which the graduates' work situation is influenced by several

factors. Frequency and percentages were used to meticulously compile, tabulate,

analyze, and interpret the data. The degree to which a factor affected the standing of

the graduates of AB History was described using the weighted mean. The study found

that the criteria listed had a significant impact on AB History graduates. The study

suggests that in order to provide graduates with job experience, on-the-job training at

sizable enterprises or organizations should be set up. Additionally, the curriculum

ought to include a code of professional ethics to help graduates acquire strong work

ethics, morals, and professionalism in order to better prepare them for integration into

society at large. Lastly, it is also advised that curriculum development and planning in
higher education should give more weight to the learning of various useful skills or

practice-oriented studies.

Adlawan, J. et al. (2023): This study aims to track the employability of

Central Luzon, Philippines State University graduates with a Bachelor of Science in

Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from 2005 to 2020. The study

employed a descriptive-quantitative research approach to delineate and track the

demographic characteristics, work situation, and professional growth of the

participants. The study used a survey questionnaire anchored in CHED's graduate

tracer instrument to gather information about the personal, educational, and work

backgrounds of the graduates as well as their perceptions of the value of the bachelor

degree in their jobs.

Corpuz, R. et al. (2020): The main goal of a university or other higher

education establishment is to generate employable graduates. This study outlined the

characteristics of the NEUST Atate Campus Bachelor of Science in Information

Technology, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and Bachelor of

Science in Entrepreneurship graduates from batches 2018 and 2019 in terms of

gender, employment status, year hired, and monthly salary. Additionally, it included a

list of agencies and the job location where the NEUST Atate Campus graduates were

employed. This study employed a descriptive survey research design. 118 people

graduated from NEUST Atate Campus in total, including 24 BSBA (Batch 2018), 29

BSEntre (Batch 2019), and 65 BSIT (27 graduates of 2018 and 38 graduates of 2019).

Casagan, E. et al. (2017): A university's performance in terms of enhancing

its students' abilities and getting them ready for the workforce is measured by the

completion of tracer studies. In addition to gathering information on the employment

characteristics and work experiences of VSU's graduate degree program alumni, this

study aimed to get input from them regarding their overall university education.

Surveys were distributed online to graduates with working email addresses; alumni

employed at VSU and other local agencies and organizations were given

questionnaires to complete; and grads working in select Bohol institutions were

interviewed and focus group discussions were held. Among the seventy-three

respondents, seventy-eight completed their master's degree at ViSCA, LSU, or VSU,

while sixteen completed their PhD at the same university.

Tracer study is a tool to measure the success of an institution or university to

find out changes and needs in the world of work and the industrial sector (Azizah et

al., 2019). More tangible objectives in the tracer study, such as improving education,

training, and learning, increasing the transition of graduates from education to

employment, and integrating both soft and hard skills, for the industrial and also the

business world (Kalaw, 2019), Universities need to do tracer studies because they

require feedback from each graduate. Feedback from tracer studies could have

implications for universities to improve the quality of the education system and

management (Andari et al., 2021; Nugroho & Nugroho, 2018). Tracer study could

also be used as an indicator in the assessment of accreditation completeness (Kherid

et al., 2021).

Andari, S. et al. (2021), a tracer study is a type of research that can be used to

ensure and enhance the quality of higher education institutions by offering useful data

for assessing the outcomes of higher education. This study employs survey research

methodology and a quantitative research strategy. The alumni of the Educational

Management Department who received their degrees in 2019 and 2020 make up the
research population. Saturated sampling is the method utilized, in which every

member of the population is included in the sample. Descriptive statistics were used

to examine the study's findings and extract data regarding the number of graduates. It

contains information mandated by Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi

(BAN-PT), such as who graduated, their employment status, the length of time

graduates must wait before starting their jobs, and other details.

Kahn, M. et al. (2021), the mobility of the highly skilled, summarized as

brain drain, brain circulation, and brain gain, remains a continuing issue for policy.

But there is still a poor body of evidence to guide policy. Policymakers in nations

where brain drain occurs should pay special attention to this disparity. This paper

presents the results of a tracer study of foreign African doctorate graduates from top

universities in South Africa. The sample frame was created by looking through the

dissertation holdings at the library because access to student records was difficult.

This methodology facilitated the surveying of a representative sample. Remarkably,

most graduates returned home after finishing school, defying the prediction that most

would leave Africa as a brain drain.

Ansah, F. et al. (2020). One of the most important strategies for increasing

study program effectiveness in modern higher education is the use of graduate tracer

studies. Graduate tracer studies in Ghanaian higher education institutions have

increased dramatically as a result of this. Reflective techniques on the difficulties and

insights from this research are, nevertheless, insufficient. This article details the

difficulties the research team faced and the lessons they learned for conducting future

graduate tracer studies in the Ghanaian context. It does this through focus groups and
individual interviews with members of the research team that conducted nationwide

data collection in connection with a graduate tracer study.

Chaiyo, K. (2017). Understanding the labor market and the caliber and

applicability of programs provided by higher education institutions (HEIs) requires

conducting a tracer study. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the status of Thai

graduates from the University of Northern Philippines' (UNP) blended education

programs. The bulk of the respondents hold middle-level jobs in the Thai government,

are employed, have finished doctorates in public administration, and earn significant

monthly wages. After earning a doctorate, the respondents' levels of competence,

honor, and prestige all considerably increased. The instructors and curriculum have

received great marks from the respondents; however, the school's facilities have

received negative marks.

Theoretical Framework

` This study adopts a combined theoretical framework that integrates two key

perspectives: human capital theory and career development theory.

Gary S. Becker (1962) views education and skills development as

investments in oneself. These investments enhance an individual's human capital,

increasing their value in the labor market.

In the context of this study, the human capital theory suggests that the

education and skills acquired by history majors at Camarines Norte State College

represent an investment. This investment is expected to translate into better

employment opportunities, higher salaries, and potentially greater career

advancement.

On the other hand, Jamie Birt's (2023) Career Development Theory is the

study of career paths, success, and behavior. It aims to explain why a person might be

a good fit for a certain career and provide advice on how to attain a promising

trajectory. It also focuses on identifying common career stages when education,

guidance, and other interventions are necessary; it delves deeper into the individual's

perspective. There are various career development theories, but some core concepts

explored include: self-efficacy, exploration and establishment of career goals, and

transferable skills.

This study will combine these theories to examine the relationship between the

educational investment made by history majors at Camarines Norte State College and

their career development outcomes.

Through the lens of human capital theory and career development theory, the

study aims to provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the history program at

Camarines Norte State College in preparing graduates for successful careers.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research process and how the investigation was

conducted for the realization of the objectives of this study. It included the research

design, data collection techniques, sampling technique, subject of the study, and

materials to be used in the data gathering instruments and tools.

Research Design

A combination of qualitative and quantitative research studies will be used.

Qualitative research relates to the ideas, perceptions, opinions, or beliefs of the person

being studied, and all of them cannot be measured by numbers. According to Creswell

(2012), qualitative research is a means for exploring and understanding the meaning

individuals or groups ascribe to a social human problem. The process of research

involves emerging questions and procedures, collecting data in the participant's

setting, analysing the data inductively, building from particulars to general themes,

and making interpretations of the meaning of the data. On the other hand, quantitative

research is a formal, objective, rigorous, deductive approach, and systematic strategies

for generating and refining knowledge for problem solving (Burns & Grove, 2005).

Its designs are either experimental or non-experimental and seek to obtain accurate

and reliable measurements (Rahman, 2017).

Respondents to the Study

The respondents of this study are the graduates of history majors in 2016–2020 at

Camarines Norte State College. The researchers used the total enumeration method

and the snowball method to find the respondents of the study.

Data Collection

The methods used by the researchers to collect data for this study are

interviews, checklists, and questionnaires, but the first is to make gradual steps in

detail. By processing the research inquiry, it will begin by asking for permission with

authorization letters bearing the signature of the adviser. Then the researchers will

identify the names and approach the participants, such as all the graduates of history

majors in 2016–2020. Then, within the specific date, the researchers will conduct

interviews via face-to-face, Gmeet, or video call with the respondents. In order to

summarise, analyse, and interpret the data, the researcher will take the time to identify

and define the crucial details relevant to the study. It can take follow-up questions in

order to clarify some helpful information. The researchers also ensured that ethical

considerations were taken into account. This included obtaining informed consent

from participants, protecting their privacy and confidentiality, and ensuring that the

research did not cause harm or distress to them.

Material Use in Data Gathering Instruments

The researcher used a guide questionnaire printed on paper and via Gform for

the interviews and will approach reliable participants who were involved in and

graduated from history courses. The researcher also prepared letters to ask permission

to conduct data gathering through personal interviews to collect information. The

guide questions will assist in conducting the interview process and will serve as a

framework for the discussion. Using an audio recorder from a cell phone contains the

voices of the graduates. All the information gathered was utilised for this study alone;

confidentiality is strictly observed.

Ethical Standard/Consideration

During the interview, all the information that we gathered from the

participants was purely utilized in our study. It is imperative to uphold the principles

of informed consent and confidentiality to ensure the ethical use of the information

gathered from the participants in our study. We ask the participants or respondents if

they are willing to answer the question with their consent; therefore, they agreed

without feeling forced. The participation of participants and respondents is entirely

voluntary. Their identities will be protected, and their responses will be anonymous if

they want to, because according to Angara who is the author and sponsor of Republic

Act 10173, officially known as the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (DPA), it is the

Philippines' data privacy law, aiming to “protect the fundamental human right of

privacy and communication while ensuring the free flow of information to promote

innovation and growth” while also ensuring “that personal information in information

and communications systems in the government and in the private sector is secured

and protected. The data collected during the interviews was securely stored and

protected to prevent unauthorized access. Moreover, researchers are transparent and

honest about the purpose of the study, their affiliations, and the intended use of the

data. Lastly, the researchers provide the participants with an opportunity for

debriefing where they can ask questions, seek clarifications, or express any concerns

they have about the study.

Conceptual Framework

This study examines the careers of BA History graduates from CNSC, who
finished their studies between 2016 and 2020. The research is guided by a conceptual
framework that examines the relationship between the BA History program and the
graduates employment outcomes. The conceptual framework of this study showed a
system of concepts. It was composed of three factors: input, process, and output.
The first section, input, focus on the fundamental elements that shape the
graduates experiences. Here, we examine three critical aspects: History Major
Graduates (2016-2020), the program offerings of BA History as relevant to the
graduates, and the employment status of history majors from academic year 2016-
2020. Additionally we will also give some possible solutions to resolve the
employment mismatch of the History graduates.
The second section, process, delves into the methods employed to gather data
and investigate the relationship between the input and output variables. The study
outlines two primary methods for data collection: interviews and questionnaires.
Interviews give us a deeper understanding of individual graduate experiences.
Questionnaires, though, can reach more graduates, providing a broader view of career
trends and program satisfaction. After collecting the data, we'll statistically analyze
the questionnaire responses to understand the prevalence of specific career paths,
skills, and graduate perceptions of program relevance.
The last section we have the output, focuses on the findings from the research
process. This section intends to address the study's primary questions: Building on the
timeframe established in the input section, this output will provide a clear image of
the identified history major graduates from academic year 2016 and 2020.
