Primary Sources Secondary Sources

Provides direct or first-hand evidence

about an event, an object, a person or a
work of art, primary sources are
absolutely fundamental to history. If a
document refers to the contents of a
previous but undiscovered letter, the
document may be considered
“primary.”
Generally described, discuss, interpret,
comment upon, analyse, evaluate,
summarize and process primary
sources. If the letter is original source
and it later found it may be considered
“secondary.”

Documentary films are considered secondary

or primary sources depending on how much
the filmmaker modifies the original source.
