Dear Prospective Student,
What does it mean to be an architect? What does it mean to be a professional?
The Master of Architecture at the IE School of Architecture and Design is based on an
optimistic, international, and interdisciplinary response to these fundamental questions.
This program serves to complete your professional licensure in Spain, with recognition
throughout the European Union, and as such, we provide you with the tools and
technical training necessary to reach that very important milestone.
But it’s our firm belief that in order to address the complex global challenges of today—
and to do so with intelligence, creativity, and responsibility—requires much more
than a professional license. It requires an international outlook; it requires a focus on
sustainability and applied technologies, both new and old; it requires an entrepreneurial
spirit to make big plans, and the technical know-how to make those plans real; it
requires a generosity of spirit and a forward-looking approach to the world. Perhaps
most importantly, it requires the capacity to synthesize all of these abilities and traits in
order to shape the world around us.
That’s why we’ve built this program around three central pillars: an international
approach to architecture practice, a focus on technologies of sustainability, and
instruction in management and entrepreneurship for the design professions.
To that end, you’ll be working with world-renowned architect and entrepreneur Ben
van Berkel, who as Thesis Chair, will direct the final degree project sequence, along with
other leading professionals based in Spain, and associates of the Amsterdam-based firm
UNStudio. As part of this collaboration, you´ll travel to Amsterdam, a living laboratory
for urban innovation, where you’ll work closely with the UNStudio team, and have
a chance to explore first-hand how architecture and urbanism can address complex
challenges with intelligence and grace.
You’ll also participate in our advanced design studio and construction workshop. Here,
you’ll explore how we can apply novel architectural strategies and technologies to
address issues of sustainability.
Finally, you’ll enroll in our Design Management Module, a three-course sequence of
training in the business aspects of contemporary practice in the creative professions.
These courses will help you formulate your career plan and will give you the tools to
implement it.

Why Enroll

all students who have graduated with
the Spanish 5-year non-license-granting
undergraduate architectural studies degree
(“ fundamentos de arquitectura” or “estudios de
arquitectura”), from any accredited Spanish
university.
Students who have graduated with a
comparable or longer degree from other
countries and have demonstrated a record
of academic excellence may be eligible for
our intensive Professional Access Plan
option, which can provide access to the
MArch program for those who have not
completed their undergraduate studies in

Here’s where you pull it all together. In the third
and final module of the Thesis Project, students

UNStudio, an award-winning international
architecture firm, with offices in Amsterdam,
Frankfurt, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. He is also
founder of UNSense, an Arch Tech company
based in Amsterdam that designs and integrates
human-centric tech solutions for the built
environment. His projects include the Erasmus
Bridge in Rotterdam, the Moebius House, the
Mercedes-Benz Museum in Frankfurt, the
Wasl tower in Dubai, Arnhem Central Station,
and the Raffles City mixed-use development

David Goodman is Associate Dean, Director of

Graduate School of Design and of Cornell University.
His current research deals with innovations in
architecture practice and production during times of

Marcela Aragüez is Assistant Professor of Architecture
and Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies in

She is a licensed architect with professional experience
in Spain and Switzerland, and received her PhD in
Architectural History & Theory at the Bartlett School
of Architecture, UCL. Marcela’s research focus lies in
the production of adaptable architecture and cross-
cultural post war practices in Japan.

Pavilion Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, the

Student: Ana Corina de la Fuente José María Casado Gómez

Water is a meaningful element for the city
of Valencia, shaping its urban morphology
and urban development. Paradoxically,
the city and the harbor are understood
as independent entities, separated and
disconnected. The main design challenge
for the proposal becomes how to create
connectivity between the city and its water’s
edge utilizing the network of 31 schools
in the nearby area. The design focuses on
recovering the oldest part of the harbor,
modifying its shape to reactivate the
coastline, and generating a linear park.
Crossing the Stream anticipates the urban
future by redefining the fabric between
two cities. The aim of the project is to
link both towns, providing infrastructures
within a metropolitan park, offering new
communications, and reprograming the
area over the stream disconnection, which
becomes the key element of the union. The
linear park establishes spaces that improve
the quality of life around the area, creating
a hearth for the new neighborhood, which
consolidates the conurbation between
towns, transforming them into the third
most populous city in the region of
Extremadura.

ENTRE BLURRING PARALLEL OLIVIUM

BARRIOS
Student: Paula López Vallespir
Entre Barrios is a 600 m-long street
intervention that aims to create a unified
ground to support the life of Broadway
theatre. It is a way of reinventing the street
as the contemporary stage for spectacle of
public life. The proposal aims to help the
neighborhood strengthen its image and
its tourist potential while providing the
local community with a series of services
currently absent. The project suggests a
possible future of urbanism by proposing
a change of habit in the use of streets as a
way to recognize and perform the beauty of
daily life; to highlight the theatrical aspect
of our being.
BOUNDARIES

Walls are normally used to enclose spaces.
In this project, however, the aim is to blur
boundaries.
60 years ago, a series of “Pueblos de
Colonización” were implemented in the
Extremadura region. These towns worked
with the land to make it as productive as
possible, joining landscape and production.
The goal of this architectural intervention
is to blur the town boundaries with the
integration of the productive landscape
within the urban fabric, in order to build a
new scenario for the town.

project proposes a new way of engaging
with industry. The project links different
phases involved in the industrial production
of olive-based products, and three different
