1. A stone of mass 20g is released from a catapult whose rubber is stretched through 5 cm. If the
force constant of the rubber is 200NM-1, calculate the speed with which of the stone leaves the
catapult.
2i. Define heat capacity.
ii. An electric kettle rated 1.2KW is used to heat 800g of water initially at a temperature of 20 0C.
Neglecting heat losses, calculate the time taken for the kettle to heat the water to its boiling point.
(Take boiling point of water = 1010C, specific heat capacity of water = 4200JKg-1K-1)
3. Calculate the quantity of heat needed to change the temperature of 60g of ice at 00C to 800C.
(Specific latent heat of fusion of ice = 3.36 x 105JKg-1K-1)
4. An 800kg car moving at 80kmhr-1 collides with a 1200kg car moving at 40kmhr-1 in the same
direction. If the cars stick together, calculate their common velocity.

2. A used car was purchased at N900,000. Its value depreciated by 30% in the first year. In each
subsequent year, the depreciation was 22% of its value at the beginning of that year. If the car was
brought on 1st March, 2011, calculate, correct to the nearest hundred naira, the value of the car on
28th February, 2015.

3. The diagonals of a rhombus are 10.2cm and 9.3cm long. Calculate, correct to one decimal
place the perimeter of the rhombus.
