Read the text below. Then, answer the questions briefly.

On the desert of Arabia, there was a tribe ruled by Ali Ben. One evening his
daughter Zuleika ran to him and told him that there was a stranger going to their tribe. He
had told them that the great Sheik Ben Nedi was coming the next day. The whole camp
bustled with excitement as Ben Nedi was a great leader known far and wide for his power
and goodness. While everyone was busy preparing, only Zuleika sat alone and idle. She
had nothing to offer for the Sheik because her baby camel just died. She went near the
great stone and sat there to weep. Suddenly a misty white figure appeared and took the
shape of a beautiful fairy. The fairy asked Zuleika why she was crying, and Zuleika told her
the reason. The fairy asked her to stop crying because she had more to offer the Sheik and
told her to come back tomorrow where her tears fell upon and she would find something to
give the Sheik. The next morning Zuleika came back and found a tree standing, so she told
her father. That afternoon the great Sheik came and agreed that Zuleika's gift was the best
of all for it sprung from the desire of the heart.
(From the Arabian Folktale: The Wonder Tree)

Process Questions:
1. What is the text all about?
2. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?

What Is It
There are many different text types that you may encounter in a single day. You might
read a newspaper article, write a letter or a message to a friend, follow a recipe to make meals
or desserts, read social media posts, short stories or novels and many more.
While all these forms of text have the written word in common, each has its own unique
features and conventions. The major types of texts are:

1. Narrative in literature - tells a story or part of a story. Narrative texts include plot
structure, conflict, characterization, setting, theme, point of view, sequencing, and
transitions. Examples are novels, short stories, historical accounts, poems, and plays.
2. Expository texts provide factual information about a topic using a clear, non-narrative
organizational structure with a major topic and supporting information. They seek to
inform, explain, describe, or define a specific topic through descriptions,
comparison/contrast, cause/effect, or problem/solution. Examples are textbooks,
encyclopaedias, scientific books/journals, atlases, directions, guides, biographies,
newspapers.
3. Explanatory texts are used to describe how things work and why things happen. An
explanation tries to provide answers to questions that the reader (or listener) may have
on a certain subject. Explanations are used to teach people new information. Examples
of these: How does a DVD player work? Why are there different seasons?
4. Factual and personal recount texts retell a past event or experience in the order in
which they happened. These events include personal events or experiences or factual
incidents. Its purpose is to inform or entertain the reader. For the writer, the purpose is
to have a record of the event.
a. A personal recount is a type of writing where the writer is involved in the topic or
event. Examples of personal recounts are personal experiences, memories, and
perceptions.
b. On the other hand, factual recount does not involve a personal experience but
writes about an interesting event. Examples of factual recounts include newspaper
articles, historical events, and scientific facts.

5
5. Persuasive texts are used to share an opinion about a particular subject. Its aim is to
convince or make the reader agree with the writer to adopt a particular opinion or
perform a certain action. Examples are newspaper columns, letters to the editor,
advertising campaigns, debates, arguments, discussions, brochures, campaign flyers,
influential essays, and articles.

POINTS TO PONDER
Being able to recognize the different text types and their distinct features has
a number of advantages. It helps you to understand the purpose of the text. It
helps you locate information you are searching for more easily because you
will be familiar with how different texts are structured. It helps you develop a
shared understanding about how to communicate effectively in different
situations. This means that you will be able to construct similar texts yourself
using appropriate formality and structure.

What I Can Do
Directions: Read the following excerpts carefully and identify its type. Write only the letter of
your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

A. narrative B. expository C. explanatory D. recount E. persuasive

1. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the famous spiritual and political leader in India
whom they fondly called Mahatma, or Great Soul. Born in Porbandar, India on October 2,
1869, he belonged to the middle class Hindu. His family belonged to the Vaisyas (merchant)
caste of Hindus. In India, the highest in rank were the Brahmans composed of priests and
scholars, while the lowest were composed of noble men and warriors.
2. One day Ali Baba was at work collecting and cutting firewood in the forest, and he
happened to overhear a group of forty thieves visiting their treasure store. The treasure was
in a cave, the mouth of which was sealed by magic. It opened on the words ‘Open, Sesame!’,
and sealed itself on the words ‘Close, Sesame!’ When the thieves were gone, Ali Baba entered
the cave himself, and took some of the treasure home.

First, we visited the Mangrove Forest which plays an important environmental role sheltering
the coast and preventing erosion. Then we went to Gala-Gala Underground House. It was the
most outstanding human-made building ever. After that, we watched the spectacular
Lembongan sunset. With its beautiful white sand and gorgeous unspoiled views, Sandy Bay
Beach was our favorite. Therefore, we really loved the whole adventure and we’re looking
forward to visiting other interesting places in Lembongan Island. What an enjoyable trip it was!
5. You can cook a perfectly boiled egg for breakfast if you follow these six easy steps.
First, get a pot big enough to hold one egg. Then, fill the pot 4/5 full with water. Next, put the
egg in the pot and put the pot on the stove. Turn the heat to high and wait for the water to boil.

The Thousand and One Nights, also known as The Arabian Nights, or Alf laylah wa
laylah in Arabic, is a collection of stories from unknown dates and authors taking place
largely in the Middle East. The range of locations of the stories - India, Iran, Egypt -
indicates that the tales came from multiple authors. The earliest narratives were written
around 750 A.D., while others were first told centuries later. Famous stories include
Aladdin, Sindbad the Sailor, and Ali Baba. The Thousand and One Nights follows the story
of the Persian king, Shahryar, and his wife, Scheherazade, who tells him part of a story
each night before dawn, a different tale every night for 1,001 days.

Lesson Developing Paragraphs for Narrative

and Recount Texts
2
What I Need to Know
After going through the process of discovery with the learning tasks, you are expected to:
1. identify the type of paragraph presented;
2. arrange the parts of a paragraph; and
3. state the importance of writing narratives and recounts.

What’s In
Read the situations below. Decide the type of text that is appropriate to use for each.
A. narrative B. recount
1. Victoria's English teacher told them to write a paragraph about their personal
experience during this pandemic.

7
2. Ador will be presenting a story about the origin of his hometown's name as part of
his performance in Araling Panlipunan.
3. Lupe is making a novel about friendship as an entry to a national writing contest.

What’s New
Everyone has a story to tell and ideas to express. You see it in social media where
your friends rave or rant about their day, take pictures of their delicious meal, or say anything
in 140 words or less. Whatever it is that you have to write, it is always to your benefit if you
can write it in the best way possible. This lesson will show you how paragraphs for different
purposes are written.
Study the following texts and determine how they were written.

Text A
My New Classmate
On the first day of my 6th grade, Mr. Castillo introduced a new classmate. He
hesitantly spoke up and introduced himself. He was Mark Ricarte, the youngest of three
children. His eldest brother was in Grade 10; the sister in Grade 8. He narrated that he and
his family came from Tacloban where their house was devastated by typhoon Yolanda.
They had no choice but to move to Manila with relatives. He paused mid-sentence while
recalling the events, pretending to cough while all the while I knew he was choking back
his tears. Our usually boisterous class became suddenly very quiet, listening intently to his
story. Mr. Castillo then quickly stood up from where he was sitting on the side of the
classroom, then asked Mark a random question to distract him and veer away from the
topic regarding the tragedy. After a few minutes, he gave the class a smile. Everyone
agreed that this school year was going to be quite interesting because of the new kid in
class. (From Quipper Limited)

Text B
My Most Unforgettable Beach Experience
I don’t usually like going to the beach, but I really couldn’t forget my most awesome
beach experience. That was 2020 before the pandemic hit the Philippines. I just graduated
from elementary, and my parents treated my sister and me to a three-day trip to this
beautiful island in the south of Cebu. We stayed at a beautiful resort that had an infinity
pool and was a few steps away from the beach. It had soft, sugary white sand and clear,
blue waters. We swam to our hearts’ content. After a fun-filled day, we had the most
delicious boodle fight by the beach while watching the most beautiful sunset. The next days
were also full of excitement. Those few days were really the most magnificent days for me.

Process Questions:
1. What type of text is Text A? Text B?
2. What are their similarities and differences?

What Is It

Text A is an example of a narrative text while Text B is a recount text. Narrative and
recount are two types of writings that describe a past happening or an event. However, the
main difference between recount and narrative lies in their structure.

8
A narrative text narrates a story with the main purpose of entertaining the readers.
The story can be imaginary or based on a real incident. It has a complication and a
resolution. It does not use a specific order in telling the story. On the other hand, a recount
text retells or report an event that happened in the past with the purpose of either informing
or entertaining the readers (or both). It does not have a complication or a resolution. Events
are presented in chronological order.

TIPS:
• Use past tense to retell the events.
• The topic sentence should arouse reader’s interest. This can be done
by describing a scene or introducing characters.
• Use transitional words or phrases to show the flow of events.
• Use concrete and vivid language to show readers what is happening
such as using adjectives or adverbs in describing who the character is
and what s/he does.
