ESSAY
1. Why was Rizal loyal to Ateneo even if he was studying in
UST?
Jose Rizal's loyalty to Ateneo stems from the transformative
Jesuit education he received there, shaping his character, mind,
and patriotism. Graduating with top honors in 1877, he credited
the Jesuits for much of his development, even though he studied
at the University of Santo Tomas under Dominicans. Despite
winning awards at UST, he felt more connected to Ateneo's
dynamic atmosphere and engaged in extracurricular activities
there. Rizal maintained a strong bond with his former Jesuit
mentors, seeking their guidance and support, while also donating
to the Ateneo library and museum. His loyalty became a source
of inspiration for fellow Ateneans, who regarded him as a
personal hero embodying excellence, service, and love for God
and country.

2. Why did Jose use rizal instead of mercado?

Jose Rizal chose the surname Rizal instead of Mercado to avoid
suspicion from Spanish authorities due to Paciano was already
identified with the Mercado surname, having malicious charges
because of his friendship to Fr. Burgos, who was accused by the
Spanish authorities as a participant in the Cavite Mutiny. Also
advised by his brother who was associated with reformist Jose
Burgos, Rizal aimed to establish a name symbolizing his love
for the Philippines and a new Filipino identity. "Rizal," meaning
"to be reborn" in Spanish, also reflects green fields for rice
cultivation. Additionally, he sought to honor his Chinese
ancestry, deriving Rizal from the Chinese Zhi Li, meaning
"straight" or "upright." Rizal believed this name better
represented his character and ideals compared to the common
and commercial Mercado.

3. Why did Rizal pursue ophthalmology?

Motivated by his deep devotion to his mother, Teodora Alonso,
who suffered from cataracts, Jose Rizal pursued ophthalmology
to restore her sight and alleviate her x`pain. Simultaneously, he
aimed to contribute to the scientific progress of the Philippines,
recognizing the need for research and innovation in the field.
Under the mentorship of renowned European ophthalmologists
like Louis de Wecker and Otto Becker, Rizal acquired advanced
techniques and instruments.
