Dr. Jose P. Rizal had his early education in Calamba and Binan. It was
a type of schooling that a son of an ilustrado family received during his
time, characterized by four R’s – reading, writing, arithmetic, and
religion.

The first teacher of Rizal was his mother, who was a remarkable woman
of good character and fine culture. As Jose grew older, his parents employed
private tutors to give him lessons at home. His first tutor was Maestro
Celestino, his second tutor was Maestro Lucas Padua. Later, an old man
named Leon Monroy, a former classmate of Rizal’s father, became the boy’s
tutor.

#GETTING TO KNOW HIM MORE:

We will know how different Dr. Rizal from us as a student.
In fact, I have so many questions in my mind, right now.
1. Is he really an outstanding student just what I have heard from
my parents?
2. Did he experience having failing grades?
3. What are his study habits?
4. Did he procrastinate also during the submission of his outputs?
5. Did he experience the “new normal learning” like what we are
experiencing?

Oh, sorry! It is obvious that I am so interested to know more about

him.

When he was 11 years old, Rizal entered

the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. He earned
excellent marks in subjects like
philosophy, physics, chemistry, and
natural history. At this school, he read
novels; wrote prize-winning poetry (and
even a melodrama— “Junto al Pasig”); and
practiced drawing, painting, and clay
modeling, all of which remained lifelong
interests for him.

✓ Rizal eventually earned a land surveyor’s and assessor’s degree

from the Ateneo Municipal while taking up Philosophy and Letters
at the University of Santo Tomas.
✓ Upon learning that his mother was going blind, Rizal opted to study
ophthalmology at the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. He,
however, was not able to complete the course because “he became
politically isolated by adversaries among the faculty and clergy
who demanded that he assimilate to their system.”
✓ Rizal earned a Licentiate in Medicine at the Universidad Central
de Madrid, where he also took courses in philosophy and literature.
It was in Madrid that he conceived of writing Noli Me Tangere. He
also attended the University of Paris and, in 1887, completed his
eye specialization course at the University of Heidelberg. It was
also in that year that Rizal’s first novel was published (in
Berlin).
RIZAL’S LIFE: FAMILY, CHILDHOOD, EDUCATION, AND
TRAVELS
Module 02

✓ Rizal is said to have had the ability to master various skills,

subjects, and languages. Our national hero was also a doctor,
farmer, naturalist (he discovered the Draco rizali, a small
lizard; Apogania rizali, a beetle; and the Rhacophorus rizali, a
frog), writer, visual artist, athlete (martial arts, fencing, and
pistol shooting), musician, and social scientist.

SEE! HE IS INDEED EXTRAORDINARY! But wait!

I have another tea. Dr. Rizal got to travel
around the world, not for fun but to gain more
knowledge and experiences! #Isn’t awesome?

#SANAALL
How I wish I could do the same! Currently, I am
imagining what if I get a chance to live as Dr. Jose
P. Rizal, will I be able to give justice to his
story?

Hmmm. I think I am fine living my own life; I will just

note all his ideals and teachings; embody these values
and share to other people.

We have been reading too much! Let us take a break by

doing the next task.
