SOCIO 101 THW
Prof: Mark Anthony Quintos

Answer# 1
Among the courses you've mentioned, one must understand that Sociology deals
with studying groups of people within a society, while Psychology focuses more on the
individual. The remaining courses focus on the economy and its development towards
progress, history for understanding our identity in the past, and linguistics for analyzing
languages as essential tools for communication. Jobs that one can pursue in these fields
often include roles as educators. They could become experts where their knowledge can
be utilized if their opinion is needed to achieve a certain goal. Whatever course they
choose, they should be wholeheartedly committed and willing to sacrifice for the welfare
of people and society.
Answer# 2
All candidates, or at least well-known candidates, bring their own themes or
branding to their election campaigns. It's part of their identity to make them more
recognizable to people. For example, with Bong Bong Marcos, I see that he wants to
convey to people that he is the only one capable of changing the situation in the
Philippines. Filipinos often rally behind a character who, even lacking credentials, they
believe can change the world. Filipinos greatly admire a character who seems to find
solutions ahead of their smarter and more credentialed opponents, and perhaps that was
the effective branding of Bong Bong Marcos that led to his victory. Leni's branding as a
gentle, kind-hearted woman who is genuinely good and clean of political crimes is also
an effective tactic, but I believe it overshadowed or outshone her intellectual capabilities.
People forgot that she is a graduate, a lawyer, and currently the vice president at the time
of the election.
Using pink in her campaign is also a clever tactic for Leni because it carries multiple
meanings. One of which is the symbol of women standing up and leading in a society
dominated by men. Despite pink being traditionally associated with Robredo, it has
become successful in diverging from the trademark yellow color of the Aquinos. The term
"Pinklawan" was coined to label Leni as supposedly a puppet of the Aquino regime, aimed
at their return to power. Bong Bong's victory was aided by the endorsement of Sarah
Duterte, the daughter of the incumbent President at that time. The Marcos-Duterte
tandem was incredibly potent due to both families having numerous die-hard followers. I
also believe that the formation of this tandem was to ensure their victory rather than
fostering genuine cooperation between them. For other candidates like Ping, Isko, and
Ka Leody, they have good platforms and identities that can attract voters. However, in the
overall context of the election, they seem like side characters in a drama where only Leni
and Bongbong are the main contenders. Ka Leody has a good platform but lacks
machinery, some think it's too early for Isko to run for president, and others find Ping too
formal and lacking emotional connection. In the matter of debates, they are crucial for
people to see what each candidate can offer. However, in an inexplicable turn of events,
it seems very easy for Bongbong to manipulate people. He does not attend most debates;
the debates he attends are facilitated by his team. It feels like a home court advantage
where hardly anyone listens to his opponents, everyone just listens to Bongbong. People
are impressed and even say that Bongbong doesn't need to attend debates anymore
because he's already winning. In today's time, using social media is a powerful weapon
in campaigning. The goal is to gain the sympathy of people, so even older candidates
who are serious about their campaign are trying to be funny on the internet to make their
names more popular. It seems like all candidates have the "ngiting aso" look when facing
the camera.

Answer # 3:
The reason for this can be attributed to the excessive dependence of Filipinos on
the internet. Unlike TV news reports where information undergoes rigorous analysis to
determine if it's factual or fake news, the internet lacks regulation. What should have been
a weapon for Filipino emancipation has turned into a weapon against Filipinos, spreading
fake news and resulting in misunderstanding and division within our society. The solution
to this socio-political issue also lies within Filipinos. We need to be vigilant about such
issues and utilize our critical thinking skills. Examine both sides of the information we
receive and always base our judgments on facts.
