Unit IV
THE PROFESSIONALIZATION OF TEACHING

INTRODUCTION
Through the years, teaching has gained recognition as a profession at par with
other known and prestigious professions. It has shed off its cloak as just an ordinary
job fit only to those with lesser intellectual and financial abilities. These days, it can
already compete not necessarily in terms of financial rewards but with the prestige
that go with the title “TEACHER”. Unknown to the public, teaching has gone through
a lot of tests and trials towards professionalization. Many laws and decrees were
enacted to provide the legal bases that will improve the status of the teaching
profession. This module, will equip you with the laws promulgated that led toward the
professionalization of teaching.

O At the end of this module, you should have:

U
1. explained the various laws promulgated to professionalize
T teaching;
2. explained how a professional teacher should relate to the learners,
C
the teaching community, higher authorities and how she conducts
O herself as a person;
M
3. discussed the provisions and internalized the Code of Ethics for
Professional Teachers; and
E 4. discuss teachers’ rights and privileges of professional teachers in
S the Philippines and reflect how they apply in real life.

Did you know that there is no more noble profession than teaching. A great teacher is
a great artist, but his medium is not canvass, but the human soul. The quality of
educational process depends upon the level of education and professional training of
teachers, the nature of their method of teaching, the motives and equipment they and
their pupils have at their disposal, the scope and balance of the curriculum of school,
and the advisory services that can be drawn upon teachers to help them in their
classroom work.
