Attempt all questions

1. The roof of an electrically heated home is 6 m long, 8 m wide, and 0.25 m thick,
and is made of a flat layer of concrete whose thermal conductivity is k = 0.8 W/m
°C. The temperatures of the inner and the outer surfaces of the roof one night are
measured to be 15°C and 4°C, respectively, for a period of 10 hours. Determine (a)
the rate of heat loss through the roof that night and (b) the cost of that heat loss
to the home owner if the cost of electricity is $0.08/kWh. (2)

2. Consider a person standing in a breezy room at 20°C. Determine the total heat
transfer rate from this person if the exposed surface area and the average outer
surface temperature of the person are 1.6 m2 and 29°C, respectively. The convection
heat transfer coefficient is 6 W/m2 °C (2)

3. A 15-cm × 20-cm circuit board houses on its surface 120 closely spaced logic chips,
each dissipating 0.12 W. If the heat transfer from the back surface of the board is
negligible, determine (a) the amount of heat this circuit board dissipates during 10
hours, in kWh, and (b) the heat flux on the surface of the circuit board, in W/m2 . (2)

4. An unknown mass of iron at 90°C is dropped into an insulated tank that contains
80 L of water at 20°C. At the same time, a paddle wheel driven by a 200-W motor
is activated to stir the water. Thermal equilibrium is established after 25 minutes
with a final temperature of 27°C. Determine the mass of the iron. Neglect the energy
stored in the paddle wheel, and take the water density to 1000 kg/m3 . (2)

5. Water is heated in an insulated, constant diameter tube by a 7-kW electric resistance

heater. If the water enters the heater steadily at 15°C and leaves at 70°C. Determine
the mass flow rate of water. (2)

6. Consider a medium in which the heat conduction equation is given in its simplest
form as follows:
∂ 2T 1 ∂T
Equation 1: 2
=
∂x α ∂t
1 d dT
Equation 2: rk + ġ = 0
r dr dr

1 ∂ 2 ∂T 1 ∂T
Equation 3: 2
r =
r ∂r ∂r α ∂t
2
dT dT
Equation 4: r 2 + =0
dr dr
∂ 2T ∂ 2T 1 ∂T
Equation 5: 2
+ 2
=
∂x ∂y α ∂t

1 ∂ ∂T ∂ ∂T
Equation 6: rk + k + ġ = 0
r ∂r ∂r ∂z ∂z
∂ 2T

1 ∂ 2 ∂T 1 1 ∂T
Equation 6: 2
r + 2 2 2
=
r ∂r ∂r r sin θ ∂ϕ α ∂t

For each of these equations state

1. Is heat transfer steady or transient?

2. Is heat transfer one -, two - or three dimensional?
3. Is there heat generation in the medium?
4. Is the thermal conductivity of the medium constant or variable?
