CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This research will be conducted using a quantitative research design, specifically a

correlational-descriptive research design. A correlational research design establishes a relationship

between two related variables where the value of the correlation coefficient ranges from -1 and +1

(-1 indicates a negative relationship while +1 indicates a positive relationship). De scriptive

research design is a research method that uses data collection techniques like case studies, surveys,

etc. to derive results without influencing them. These designs will help the researchers in finding

the relationship between Time spent on Homework and Math Test Scores of First-Year College

Students’ Academic Performance at USPF and survey to collect the data.

Research Respondents

The target population of this study consists of first-year college enrolled at the University

of Southern Philippines Foundation who have math as their minor subject. The researchers will

choose 10 students each, 5 male and 5 female participants, from 7 respective programs: Bachelor

of Science in Political Science (BSPolSci), Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW), Bachelor

of Hospitality and Management (BSHM), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Bachelor of

Science in Pharmacy (BSP), Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Management (BSTM), and

Bachelor of Science in Psychology (BSPsych) in a total of 70 Freshmen of University of Southern

Philippines Foundation. The researchers will use stratified random sampling when conducting a

survey to make sure that each student, both male and female, will be represented and easily

determined.
Research Locale

This research will be held at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, Lahug

Campus located on Salinas Drive, Lahug, Cebu City. The first-year College students are the focal

point of this research and it will be conducted fairly.

Research Instrument

There are no standardized tests for academic performance in Math but rather, the

researchers are content with the students’ results. Therefore, the first thing to do is to use the

students’ Math test scores to study the students’ evaluation scores. The second thing to do is to

offer a questionnaire survey that contains 10 questions, some of which have three-choice and

others have multiple-choice options. Respondents can answer the survey questionnaires via

Google Forms or face-to-face.

Ethical Considerations

The researchers ensure that the participants are fully informed about the study’s purpose,

procedures, and benefits before participating. It is advisable to sign a consent form before

proceeding and inform them that participation is voluntary, and students have the right to withdraw

if the said survey is too personal for them or the students are occupied. Aside from that, the

researchers protect the privacy of the student and will not disclose any personal information of the

student. The researchers respect the students’ anonymity and ensure fair and unbiased treatment of

all the students who participated regardless of their demographic factors. Lastly, the researchers

respect the other researchers’ or writers’ intellectual property by citing their work to avoid

plagiarism.
Data Gathering Procedure

This research aims to investigate the relationship between time spent on homework and

math test scores among first-year students at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation.

The data-gathering procedure involves a systematic, step-by-step process to ensure that the data

that is collected is accurate and fair.

Firstly, the researchers will conduct a survey by using a stratified random sampling

technique to select participants from each respective course. Consent forms will be distributed and

those who have consent forms can only be the ones who can participate in the study. In collecting

the data of the participants, they will be given a 10-item survey questionnaire to answer questions

that the researchers asked. After answering the survey, the researchers will compile all the survey

questionnaires from the participants for the researchers to be guided on the following students who

took the survey and proceed to the next procedure.

Math test score data will be obtained from the university records with permission from the

higher-ups of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation. The data will only focus on the

first semester of the school year, 2023-2024 from Prelims to Finals. The collected data will be

anonymized in consideration of the participant’s privacy.

The statistical method used in this study is the correlation coefficient or Pearson correlation

coefficient to examine the relationship between time spent on homework and math test scores. The

result of this study will give an understanding of the relationship between time spent on homework

and math test scores.

Statistical Treatment

The statistical method that the researchers will be using to get the result of the study is the

Pearson Correlational Coefficient. The formula will help determine the positive and negative

relationship between the two variables which are, time spent on homework and math test scores.

Below is the formula of the Pearson Correlational Coefficient.
