Solar Reflectance Index (SRI)
determination according to ASTM
1980-11
Report n C181067
Page number 4
FRITTA, S.L.
Castellón, March, 8th 2018
C181067 1/4
1. Background
In March 2018, the Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica (ITC) received from FRITTA , S.L. three tiles
with the following references:
Tile 3: Terrazzo
The determination of the solar reflectance index (SRI) according to the standard ASTM E1980-11,
of the three tiles was requested.
2. Experimental
To determine solar reflectance and solar absorptance a solar spectral reflectometer SSR-ER V6 by
Devices & Services Company were used. Both parameters were calculated according to the standard
ASTM G173-03.
Absorptance of the surface of a material, , is its effectiveness in absorbing radiant energy. It is the
fraction of the incident radiation absorbed by a surface. Absorptance depends on the color and
texture of a surface and its value varies with the wavelength of the incident radiation (the spectral
distribution of the irradiation). There are different absorptances, depending on the spectral
distribution of irradiation. The most common are solar, visible and thermal absorptance. Solar
absorptance represents an integrated average over spectral solar irradiation, comprising the visible,
near infrarred and ultraviolet spectral regions. Solar absorptance decisively influences the
temperature reached by a surface irradiated by the sun.
+ ρ= 1
where is the absorptance and ρ the reflectance, hence knowlewdge of a property implies
knowledge of the other.
3. Results
Tables 1 and 2 show the solar reflectance index (SRI) values of the tiles for the three convective
coefficients detailed in the standard ASTM E1980-11 wich correspond to low-, medium- and high-
wind conditions. Solar reflectance (ρ), solar absorptance () and thermal emissivity (ε) are also
included. The SRI values of the tile “Terrazzo” in Table 1 were calculated with the mean values of
solar reflectance (ρ) and solar absorptance (), as the tile has not a homogeneous color.
C181067 2/4
Table 1. Solar reflectance index (SRI) for “Regular tile”, “Cool tile” and mean values for the tile “Terrazzo”.
Table 2. Solar reflectance (ρ), solar absorptance () and thermal emissivity (ε) of ”Regular tile”, “Cool tile” and
mean values for the tile “Terrazzo”.
Six solar reflectance measurements were taken for the tile “Terrazzo” and a significant difference
between the resulting values was observed. This is due to the fact that the “Terrazzo” surface is not
homogeneous, as can be observed in Figure 1. It is worth noting that 43% of solar irradiation is in
the visible range of the spectrum, so solar reflectance depends on surface color.
Table 3 shows the solar reflectance index values (SRI) calculated with the obtained maximum (0.62)
and minimum (0.53) solar reflectance values from the six experimental measurements done.
Table 3. Solar reflectance index (SRI) calculated with the solar reflectance values maximum (0.62) and minimum
(0.53) of the six experimental measurements on the tile “Terrazzo”.
Report no. C181067, issued at the request of FRITTA, S.L. consists of a title page and 4 pages.

Material Lab testing services (MLTS) was commissioned by Alfanar Factory for Ceramic & Porcelain to carry out
the Indoor Air Quality Assessment for Porcelain Tiles (Non glazing Off-white colour) and Glazed Porcelain Tiles
(grey colour) to measure the basic evaluation of off-gassing inside the environmental chamber of MLTS. MLTS
adopted the method and procedures for air quality monitoring in accordance to the International Standard.
2. SCOPE OF MEASUREMENT
Indoor air monitoring is designed to understand the prevailing status of Indoor Air Quality and to check the
concentration of the pollutants from the indoor air environment. The assessment covered the sampling and
testing of air quality in the environmental chamber resulting from off-gassing of the sample.
3. MONITORING PROGRAMME
Test samples were conditioned in the humidity chamber for 10 days under a controlled temperature of 20 0C and
relative humidity of 50%. Background concentration of environmental chamber was tested and recorded. After
conditioning, the samples were laid in the environmental chamber. In-situ spot testing has been logged at a point
close to central area of the environmental chamber utilizing the equipment detailed in the section 5 of this report.
Data-log trending, over the course of 8 hours, was initiated at the chamber.

PAGE 12/31
Manufacturing (A3)
The preparation of raw materials for the ceramic body starts in the Alfanar Factory for Ceramic and
Porcelain facilities with a mixture preparation, wet milling and subsequent spray drying to obtain
granules.
The procedure of the manufacturing process is the following: the spry-dried powder is discharged in
storage hoppers and with a feed system based in conveyor belts with weight control, this granule is sent
to the forming stage by uniaxial dry pressing, carried out by hydraulic or oleodinamic presses. This is
the most indicated method to control the pressing cycle.
The pieces formed are placed in a continuous dryer to reduce their humidity, duplicating or triplicating
their mechanical resistance, which allows for their subsequent processing.
The tiles coming from the dryer are covered with one or more thin layers of engobe and glaze, which
are applied over the ceramic body through different techniques. This treatment is used to confer the
product surface a series of technique and aesthetic features, as impermeability, ease of cleaning,
brightness, colour, superficial texture, chemical and mechanical resistance.
Firing is the most important stage of the ceramic tiles production process, as it is when the pieces,
previously shaped, experience a fundamental modification of their features, resulting in a tough, water
and chemical resistant product. The ceramic pieces are subject to a single firing single-deck roller kiln.
Once the piece is fired, in some cases mechanical treatments such as cutting and grinding are applied
to provide new effects.
Once the quality controls are met, the classified pieces are packaged in primary cardboard packs and
wood pallets. Finally, they are covered with film LDPE.

of a mixture of white or grey cement, mineral fillers of siliceous and/or limestone nature and organic
additives: water retaining agents, water re-dispersible polymers, rheology modifiers, fibres, etc.
The waste derived from the packaging of the pieces is managed separately according to the
geographical location of the installation site. Otherwise, 1% of product losses have been considered at
the installation stage.
PAGE 14/31
B1-B7 Use Stage
B1 Use
Once it had been installed, the product needed neither water nor energy input for use and do not
emissions into the environment. At this stage, there are no processes that generate environmental
impacts.
B2 Maintenance
In this module, it is considered that the maintenance operations are reduced to cleaning. It can be done
with a damp cloth and, if the surface is dirty or greasy, cleaning agents such as detergents or bleaches
can be used. In this study, two different scenarios have been considered, depending on the place of
installation, as floor and wall covering assuming a time span of 50 years. The results shown are an
average of the two situations.
C2 Transport
PAGE 15/31
The product waste is transported in a heavy-duty truck (27 t) that complies with Euro 6 standards to be
managed either by deposition in inert landfills or recycling. An average distance of 50 km from the
building site to the destination is considered. Also included is the return of the trucks (100% empty
return).
C4 Final disposal
It was assumed that 100% of the product was sent to controlled landfills after its service life had ended
[14][15].
