What This Module is About
Good day learners! Welcome to this module in Agri- Fishery Arts –
Horticulture Course ( AFA – Horticulture). In this module you will learn skills on how
to grow seedlings for your vegetable garden.
At the end of this module you will be able to apply the knowledge and skills on
growing seedlings. This is the basic skill in horticulture and essential to have a
successful vegetable production.

Welcome to the TLE – Agri-Fishery Arts (Horticulture) Grade 10 Alternative
Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Growing Seedlings!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration

Growing seedlings is not an easy task. First you need to have

knowledge on the basic about the seeds that you are going to use for
planting.
In this lesson we will learn about seeds: their quality and
characteristics and we will appreciate the value of securing a good quality
seeds for growing seedlings.

 What’s In

Seed is a ripened ovule of a seed plant before germination. Its quality plays
a vital role in production of vegetables and other horticultural crops. What are the
primary step that we are going to do to assure that we will grow good seedlings?

What’s New

In growing seedlings the primary thing that are given considerations are the
characteristics and quality of the seeds that you are going to grow. Though different
types of seeds looks different from one another there is a common characteristics
that signifies good quality.
Viable seeds - capable of germination under suitable conditions
Seed Dormancy – a period during which seeds has no active growth. Also known
as rest - period of the seeds.
Germination - the development of seeds into a young plant.

What is It

Characteristics of a Good Quality Seeds

Seeds quality plays an important role in the production of
horticultural crops. The selection of the best planting material is basic to
good crop production.

There are some factors to consider in selecting quality seeds

1. Viability. It is the capability of seeds to germinate.
2. Seed maturity. Seeds from a matured fruit that have a fully developed
embryo.
3. Free from insect or mechanical damage
4. Pure for the crop variety
5. Contain little or no inert matter or weed seeds.
6. Free from seed borne diseases
7. Seed storage.

Procurement of Seeds
There are ways of procuring seeds to be planted:
1. You can buy seeds from the stores

Most seeds you can buy from the stores are hybrid seeds. They are a product
of crosses of two different varieties. It produces plants with vigor, disease resistance
and productivity. Hybrid seeds are more expensive.
2. You can produce your own seeds to plant

You can save vegetable seeds from your own garden produce to plant for the
next cropping. In seed savings, it involves selecting good variety of plants from which
to save seeds and harvesting seeds at the right time.

Factors to consider when securing seeds

1. Quality of the seeds
2. Adaptation of the seeds to the locality

Advantage of Producing own seeds for planting

1. The supply of seeds needed in your farm is already available
2. It improves the quantity and quality of your product.

Disadvantage of producing your own seeds

1. It calls for the knowledge of the principle of plant breeding.
2. You won’t get the same quality of plant when you grow it
3. Seed growing in an exacting work
4. It calls for keen observation
5. Requires application of detail

production. She bought a pack of eggplant seeds from a side walk vendor. When he
sowed the eggplant seeds in the seed box. She was surprised that only few eggplant
seeds germinated.

2. If you are Joan, are you going to buy seeds from anyone? Why?

Summary
In growing seedlings, the most important thing to consider is the
characteristics and quality of the seeds. Good quality seeds is viable, true to its
name, free from damage and fully developed.
Although there are advantages and disadvantages in producing your own
seeds, the most important thing when you secure seeds is to consider the quality of
the seeds and its adaptation to the locality.
