2. Hotels H and K offer Deluxe and Superior rooms for a group of 200 tourists. A total of
90 tourists stayed in Hotel H where 70 of them are placed in Deluxe rooms. Of the
tourists who stayed in Hotel K, 60 are placed in Superior rooms. A tourist is picked at
random form the group of tourists.

(a) Calculate the probability that the tourist


(i) stayed in a Deluxe room in Hotel H or a Superior room in Hotel K. [3 marks]

3. The number of complaints received a week is a discrete random variable X with the

5. An air-conditioner manufacturer launches a new model of energy-saving air-conditioner.


The life span of its air compressor is normally distributed with a mean of 5 years and a
standard deviation of 2 years.

(b) The manufacturer guarantees to replace the air-conditioner compressors that last

6. A farm produces eggs. The farmer claims that 60% of the eggs weight more than 64
grams. A random sample of 1 000 eggs is taken.

(a) Use a normal approximation to estimate the probability that more than 550 and
less than 600 eggs weigh more than 64 grams. [5 marks]

(b) If the probability that the eggs weight is less than t grams is 0.97, determine the
value of t. [5 marks]

7. A biologist assumes that there is a linear relationship between the amount of fertilizer
supplied to tomato plants and the subsequent yield of tomatoes obtained.
Eight tomato plants, of the same variety, were selected at random and treated weekly with
a solution in which x grams of fertilizer was dissolved in a fixed quantity of water. The
yield, y kilograms of tomatoes was recorded.
