(a). Find median and the mean of the masses of fish. [4 marks]
(c). State whether the median or the mean is more suitable as a measure of
central tendency of the above distribution. Give a reason for your answer. [2 marks]

0 otherwise
(a). Determine the value of c and tabulate the probability distribution of X. [3 marks]
5. The following table shows the quantities sold and the unit price of three stationeries
manufactured by a company.
(a) By using 2014 as the base year, calculate the Laspeyres quantity index and the Paasche
price index for year 2015 [4 marks]
(b) Determine whether the ‘quantity sold’ or ‘price of the stationeries’ contributes more to the
growth of the company. [2 marks]
6.The table below shows the expenses involved in exporting the raw material of plastic for each
quarter in the years 2008, 2009 and 2010
(a) Plot the time series and determine which model is appropriate to study the time series.
[3 marks]
(b) Calculate and interpret the seasonal variation/seasonal indices for each quarter.
[7 marks]
7 The following table indicates the ages, x years and the price, RM y × 103 , for eight
cars of the same model in a second-hand car shop.
x 2 8 3 9 6 5 6 3
y 100 15 72 16 36 34 30 68
(a) Plot a scatter diagram for the data, and state what it indicates about the
relationship between the ages and the price of the cars. [3 marks]
(b) Find the equation if the regression line y on x in form y = a + bx, where a and b
are constants. [6 marks]
(c) Explain the value a and b that you obtained in (b). [2 marks]
(d) Estimate the price of a car of the same model of age 7 years. [2 marks]
(e) State, with reason, whether it is appropriate to use this regression line to predict
the price of the same model cars of age 15 years. [2 marks]
8 (a) X is a normal variable with mean 𝜇 and standard deviation 𝜎. It is given that
𝑃(𝑋 > 128) = 0.15 and that 𝑃( 𝑋 > 97) = 0.875. Calculate 𝜇 and 𝜎.
[5 marks]
(b) The quality of a product manufactured in a certain process is classified as ‘poor’,
‘fair’, or ‘good’ on the basis of a measured quantity Y which may be assumed to
have a normal distribution with mean 50 units and standard deviation 5 units.
Products are considered ‘poor’ if Y < 44, and the proportions of ‘fair’ and ‘good’
are equal. Calculate the boundary value of Y separating ‘fair’ from ‘good ‘.
[5 marks]
(c) It may be assumed that dates of birth in a large population are distributed
throughout the year so that the probability of a randomly chosen person’s date of
1
birth being in any particular month may be taken as 12 . Find the probability that,
of 100 people chosen, at least 20 will have birthdays in April, May and June.
