(DISCUSSION)

So, now let us begin with the lesson.

Our lesson for today is to critique a

literary selection using Reader-Response
Approach.

But first,we will be discussing what is

critique.

Can someone please read what is (A student will raise a hand and read the
critique? definition of critique)

Critique and criticism play different roles,

let’s discuss them.

Which one do you prefer? Lazada or (A student raises a hand)

Shopee? Why?
Sir, I prefer Shopee than Lazada because
I can find a lot of better items than
Lazada. But lazada has a lot of good
vouchers.

Another example. Which is better, Call of (A student raises a hand)

Duty or Mobile Legends?
Sir, Mobile legends is much better
because Call of Duty is a bad game.
Going back to the examples, Mr. A says
that he prefers Mobile Legends than
CODM because CODM is a bad game.

That is criticism because he simply stated

that CODM is a bad game. He is only
looking at the negative side or he just
doesn't like the game.

And Miss. C says that she prefers Shopee

than Lazada because it is easier to find a
better product but also stated that Lazada
has a lot of vouchers to offer too.

That is critique about finding the balance.

Finding the good and the bad, the
strengths and the weaknesses to improve
the work.

We can see that there is a child riding a

bicycle. What do you think happened, why
did the child fell? Sir, the child was going too fast

Good job, another answer?

Sir, the child didn’t notice that there was a
rock that’s why he fell.

Another example. What is your

explanation on why the woman bumps
into the post.
All your opinions are called reader-
response criticism.

Guys, what is a fable again?

(Students will read the story of “The Hare
Directions: Students will read “The Hare and the Tortoise”.)
and the Tortoise. They will critique the
story using the reader-response
approach. (Students will be called randomly and will
give their explanation on the 3 questions)
1. What are your thoughts after
reading the fable?

2. What do you think is the author’s

purpose in writing the text?

3. If you are given a chance to

change the ending of the story,
what would it be and why?

4. If given a chance to be one of the

two main would you choose, the
hare or the tortoise, why?
Task 4:
(GENERALIZATION)

To conclude our discussion, the Reader-

response approach emphasizes your
personal interpretation, Literary Criticism
on the other hand is about giving
comments on the literary works.

IV. Assess
Direction: Read the short story of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow “A Psalm of Life” and
answer the 10 questions. Write your answer in your notebook.

A Psalm of Life
By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

What the heart of the young man said to the Psalmist.

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,

And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world’s broad field of battle,

In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!

Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,— act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o’erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us

We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,

Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,

With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.
