Syllabus
Description: This practical course aims at introducing a selection of the most important topics in terms of physical
education and sports field of studying. The focus is on helping students use and practice specific structures, which
means that we propose to solve practical issues, searching for an answer to some relevant topics. One important goal is to
provide a better understanding of the English specialized language, but also to help our students improve and enrich
their vocabulary in their field of studying, physical education and sports.
Objectives:
 to enhance the receptive (listening and reading) and productive skills (speaking and writing);
 to use and practice English in specific academic and professional contexts;
 to enrich students’ vocabulary in fields related to their academic knowledge.

Requirements & assessment:


1. written examination, consisting of 60p (60%);
2. semester project, consisting of 40p (40%).
60p (written exam) + 40p (semester project) = 100p

WEEK 1 (23.10.2022): Introduction to course - learning outcomes, structure, content, instructional materials, course
attendance, assessment.
Unit 1: The Olympic Games – part I
 Vocabulary: The word family of “sport”. Words and phrases naming sporting values and other sports-related
ideas.
 English for Academic Purposes (EAP): the comparison: similarities and differences.
 Grammar: Present Tense Simple and Present Tense Continuous.
Unit 1: The Olympic Games – part II
 Vocabulary: Names of sports, classes of sports, sports equipment, sports metaphors.
 Grammar: Relative clauses, articles.
 EAP: Formal definitions.
WEEK 2 (06.11.2022): Unit 2: The Human Body – part I
 Vocabulary: Physical appearance, body image, bodily expectations, body types, compound adjectives describing
physical appearance, idioms with body parts.
Unit 2: The Human Body – part II
 Vocabulary: The human body: main segments, vital organs, skeletal framework, skeletal muscles, joints,
connective tissue, sensory functions, systems.
 EAP: Classifying (classes of muscles, bones, connective tissue, joints).
 Grammar: Sense verbs.
Unit 2: The Human Body – part III
 Vocabulary: the human body: main segments, vital organs, skeletal framework, skeletal muscles, joints,
connective tissue, sensory functions, systems.
 EAP: The Anatomical Description (muscles, bones, joints, organs).
WEEK 3 (20.11.2022):
Unit 3: Physical exercises – part I
 Vocabulary: Words naming effects of physical exercise on human body and mind. Phrasal verbs naming various
aspects of physical exercise.

Unit 3: Physical exercises – part II
 Vocabulary: Basic postures and movements in physical exercise. Types of physical exercises. Names of physical
exercises.
 EAP: Giving instructions.
 Grammar: The imperative.
WEEK 4 (04.12.2022):
Unit 4: Injuries – part I
 Vocabulary: Common injuries. Symptoms.
 Grammar: Present Perfect and Past Tense.
Unit 4: Injuries – part II
 Vocabulary: Common injuries. Symptoms.
 Grammar: Present Perfect and Past Tense.
WEEK 5 (18.12.2022): Unit 5: Nutrition – part I
 Vocabulary: Sports nutrition terminology. Names of nutrients and types of diets.
Unit 5: Nutrition – part II
 EAP: The physiological description (digestion, breathing, blood circulation).
 Grammar: The Present Tense Simple in scientific writing.
WEEK 6 (09.01.2023 and 10.01.2023 – will reschedule): Semester Project Presentation
WEEK 7 (16.01.2023 and 17.01.2023 – will reschedule): Semester Project Presentation
