VERTICAL STABILIZER - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

SIDE RAIL INSPECTION
Inspect vertical stabilizer side rails (P/N 45A23280) at intervals specified in Chapter 05.

Roller wear to paint, primer and hard-anodized coating of vertical stabilizer side rails is allowed. If any underlying
material is scraped, gouged, grooved, cracked, torn or stretched, refer to Chart 201 for replacement criteria (Ref.
Figure 201).

SIDE ROLLER BRACKET ASSEMBLY INSPECTION

Inspect side roller bracket assembly at intervals specified in Chapter 05.

a. Gain access to top forward vertical stabilizer and remove access covers 330 DTC and 330 ETC (Ref. VERTICAL
STABILIZER ACCESS PANELS, Chapter 06-50-00).

NOTE: If part of vertical stabilizer side rail is damaged, operate horizontal stabilizer to an undamaged area to
assess roller alignment and spacing.

b. The clearance dimension of 0 to 0.5 mm (0 to 0.0197 in.) per side should be used for inspection limits during
initial horizontal tail installation. It is normal for the horizontal tail to align, due to air loads, such that either
bearing can ride on the rib assembly. When the bearing on one side is riding the rib assembly, the other side
cannot exceed a maximum gap of 1.0 mm (0.0394 in.) for operating range of the pitch trim travel (Ref. Figure
201).

c. Check bearing for freedom of rotation.

d. To make sure there is no crack in the ribs underneath the side roller bracket assemblies and adjacent structures,
use a borescope to inspect behind the ribs at the right and left side of the vertical stabilizer (Ref. Figure 202).

e. Install access covers 330 DTC and 330 ETC with attaching hardware (Ref. VERTICAL STABILIZER ACCESS
PANELS, Chapter 06-50-00).

VERTICAL STABILIZER INSTALLATION

WARNING: Use of improper mounting hardware or lifting equipment could result in damage to the airplane
or injury to personnel.
CAUTION: Beechcraft Corporation recommends the installation of the vertical stabilizer be completed within an
enclosed building or hangar. In the interest of safety, should it become necessary to install the vertical
stabilizer in the open, wind velocity in any direction and terrain variations must be compensated for.
Do not use the rudder as a hand hold or for supporting the vertical stabilizer. Damage to the rudder or
vertical stabilizer could occur.
NOTE: Perform Steps a. through f. if the sling assembly was removed from the vertical stabilizer after removal or
if a new stabilizer is to be installed. If the same vertical stabilizer is to be installed and the sling assembly is
still attached proceed to the Note preceding Step g.

a. Remove two screws (1) from the forward support assembly (4) attach points of the vertical stabilizer (Ref. Figure
211).

b. Remove two screws (2) from the aft support assembly (5) attach points of the vertical stabilizer.

c. Connect the crane cable to the sling (2, Chart 1, 55-00-00) cable hook (3).

d. Align and connect the forward support assembly to the vertical stabilizer with two bolts.

e. Align and connect the aft support assembly to the vertical stabilizer with two bolts, two washers and two spacers
(9).

f. Remove slack from the sling assembly.

NOTE: Guide ropes may be used as necessary for stability of the vertical stabilizer during installation.

g. Carefully position the vertical stabilizer above the aft fuselage.

h. Connect wax cord (3, Chart 2, 55-00-00) left in stabilizer during removal to the two aft elevator cables (2) and
the two elevator servo cables (3) (Ref. Figure 209).

NOTE: Perform Steps i. through o. if installing new laminated shim(s) and/or a new vertical stabilizer. If installing
the original laminated shim(s) and vertical stabilizer proceed to Step p.

i. Carefully align and lower the vertical stabilizer into place while routing the heater mat wires (4) and wiring
harness (2) into the aft fuselage and pulling the two aft elevator cables (1) and two elevator servo cables (1) up
through the vertical stabilizer (Ref. Figure 213).

NOTE: Bolts, washers and nuts are used on RJ-1 and After and RK-1 thru RK-86, except RK-78. Bolts, washers
and nutplates are used on RK-78, RK-87 and After. The bolts may be NAS1105 and NAS1106 or may be
replaced with NAS6605H and NAS6606H. Refer to Figure 214 for specific bolt locations.

j. Temporarily install half of the fasteners (every other hole) in the forward (1) and aft spar (2) joining locations.

k. Using a maximum of two shims (1), remove laminations from the shim until the thickness of the shim will fill the
gap between the vertical stabilizer forward spar (2) and the canted bulkhead (3) in the aft fuselage (Ref. Figure
215).

l. Remove all bolts, washer and nuts from the forward and aft spar joining installed in Step j.

m. Slowly raise the vertical stabilizer until the stabilizer forward spar is clear of the aft fuselage.

Page 225
C27 55-30-00 Oct 01/14
MODEL 400/400A MAINTENANCE MANUAL

n. Drill holes in the laminated shim(s) (1) to match the holes in the vertical stabilizer forward spar (2). Clean the
area of all metal shavings.

o. Using adhesive (1, Chart 2, 55-00-00), bond the laminated shim(s) (1) to the vertical stabilizer forward spar (2)
aft surface, if required.

p. Carefully align and lower the vertical stabilizer into place while routing the heater mat wires and wiring harness
into the aft fuselage and pulling the two aft elevator cables (1) and two elevator servo cables (1) up through the
vertical stabilizer (Ref.

Refer to Figure 214 for specific bolt locations.

q. Install bolts, washers and nuts (in applicable) in the forward and aft spar joining locations.

r. Using Chart 202, apply torque to each bolt, then record the dash number of any bolts that do not display the
protrusion of at least two threads. Install a bolt with the next higher dash number to obtain proper thread
protrusion, then apply the appropriate torque.

Chart 202
Mounting Hardware Torque Requirements
Hardware Combination Torque
NAS1105 or NAS6605H bolt, washer and nut 100 to 140 inch-pounds
NAS1105 or NAS6605H bolt, washer and nutplate 100 to 140 inch-pounds
NAS1106 or NAS6606H bolt, washer and nut 160 to 190 inch-pounds
NAS1106 or NAS6606H and MS20006-8 bolts, 160 to 190 inch-pounds
washer and nutplate

s. Release the tension on the sling assembly (3) and remove the forward (4) and aft support (5) assemblies and
install screws (1) and (2) (Ref. Figure 211).

t. Move the sling assembly clear of the airplane and disconnect the sling cable hook (3) from the crane.

NOTE: The torque applied to the attaching hardware of the forward and aft joining installations must be rechecked
after a minimum of eight hours.

u. Check and re-torque bolts and nuts as necessary (Ref. Chart 202).

v. (RK-78, RK-87 and After only) Using safety wire (4, Chart 2, 55-00-00), safety the bolts in the forward and aft
joining installation (Ref. Chapter 20-10-06).

w. Apply torque slip marks to bolt heads (Ref. Chapter 20-30-03).

x. Position the retainer (4) so the cable fits through the slot in the retainer on the elevator quadrant. The cable ball
end must be seated into the larger opening in the retainer and not contact the quadrant (Ref. Figure 209).

CAUTION: Ensure cables are not crossed inside stabilizer.
