Write a news report using the given facts (EN 4 WC-III-25)

Background Information for Learners

News Report

A news report is a report on current or recent events to inform


readers of what is happening in the world or in the local area. It contains
facts and detailed information to general questions like who, what, when,
where, and how.

Parts of the News Report


1. Headline tells what the news is about.
2. Lead has the most important facts and is placed at the beginning of
the news report.
3. Body paragraph has the less significant details but the readers may
want to know.

In writing the lead, at least four of the Ws and one H questions are
answered.
News reports are found in newspapers and their purpose is to inform readers of what is
happening in the world around them. They are found in the news section.
News reports follow the inverted pyramid structure. Let us study the diagram below.

The primary lead is the most important information. It answers at least four of the WH-
Questions.
The secondary lead is supporting detail that supports the primary lead
Background details support the secondary lead.
The least important information links the background details. Sometimes it consists a
quote from a person involved s in the news.

Activity 1
Directions: Fill in the graphic organizer with a news report using the given
facts.

● The residents living near the shores were advised to evacuate to


designated evacuation facilities by the Local Government Unit as the
strong typhoon is approaching.
● Strong typhoon washed out plenty of houses and other properties near
the shores.
● Strong typhoon affects several families in the barangay.
● Many extended help to the affected residents by donating food,
clothing, and other necessities.

Activity 2
Directions: Arrange the given facts as they are written in a news report.
Write numbers 1- 4 on the line, 1 as the first detail and 4 as the last.
____Big waves hit a fisherman's boat while fishing during stormy weather.
____Big waves capsized the boat.
____No fatality reported but the fishermen’s boat was left distracted.
____Due to financial difficulty and necessities, the fishermen sometimes were forced to
go fishing even in bad weather which put their lives in danger.

Barangay Mayumi receives Php 10 million worth of food packs from Neutralizer
Foundation to be given to the poorest of the poor families at the height of the dengue
fever epidemic.

Each family recipient will receive three sacks of rice, Php 10,000 worth of grocery items,
and Php 5,000 worth of medicine. Lactating mothers will also receive supplementary
milk for their babies and Php 5000 worth of vitamins.
