ABSTRACT

Name of Institution: St. Joseph’s Institute, Inc.

Address: San Juan, Candon City, Ilocos Sur
Title: THE LEVEL OF SATISFACTION OF CITY MEET STUDENT-
ATHLETES ON OLYMPIAD OF SAINT JOSEPH’S INSTITUTE, INC. FOR
THE SCHOOL YEAR 2023-2024
Author: Abuyen, Yasmin Ariane S., Auingan, Alfred John M., Bongolan,
Josh Angelo C., and Escalona, Vanessa Anne C.
Subject: Practical Research 2

This study entitled, The Level of Satisfaction of City Meet Student-

Athletes on Olympiad of Saint Joseph’s Institute, Incorporated aimed to:
1) determine the satisfaction levels of city meet student-athletes
participating in the Candon City Athletic Association (CCAA) Meet,
specifically focusing on Training Services, Facilities and Equipment,
Participation and Involvement, and Financial Services; 2) determine the
sports event with the highest and lowest satisfaction. The study sought to
find out the following: the profile of the City Meet student athletes, in terms
of their sports involvement during the event.
The study included the whole population, the 128 city meet student-
athletes from St. Joseph’s Institute, Incorporated who have been involved
in the different 14 sports events during the CCAA Meet, specifically: 3 from
Archery, 3 from Athletics, 5 from Swimming, 4 from Dance sports, 4 from
Billiards, 4 from Chess, 5 from Lawn Tennis, 7 from Badminton, 8 from
Table Tennis, 13 from Futsal, 13 from Taekwondo, 16 from Basketball, 17
from Football, and 27 from Volleyball, and aimed to address the following
research questions: (1) What is the level of satisfaction of city meet
student-athletes on Olympiad in terms of: Training Services; Facilities,
Supplies, and Equipment; Participation and Involvement, and Financial
Services; and (3) Which sports event has the highest satisfaction and the
lowest satisfaction?
The researchers used the quantitative approach and survey
research design. The statistical tools used in the questions 1-20 included
mean frequency count. The findings indicated that Olympiad had a high
level of satisfaction within the city-meet student athletes in the various
factors presented.
Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn:
Olympiad maintained a high level of satisfaction among city meet student-
athletes, majority of the learners have been satisfied with the participation
and involvement variable indicating a strong sense of engagement and

enthusiasm among student-athletes towards sports activities, receiving

the highest satisfaction mean of 3.18. However, financial services variable
show room for improvement as indicating lack of support in financial
transactions and sports events, receiving a satisfaction mean of 2.72. Also,
results have shown that Basketball emerged as the sport with the highest
overall satisfaction among student-athletes obtaining a mean of 3.39,
indicating a very high level of satisfaction while Dance sports appeared as
the sport with the lowest overall satisfaction, received a satisfaction mean
of 2.66.
This implied that the study’s findings would be a significant to the
field of sports in the institution as well as other public schools in Candon
City, reaching out within the country and globally to optimize student-
athlete satisfaction and emphasize the need of prioritization of the club as
part of the extra-curricular activities of the students. Findings of high-level
satisfaction of Olympiad supervision to city meet student-athletes
suggested that it could enhance their administrative structure on sports
club to be a gateway to the development of the overall engagement and
development of the student-athletes.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Sports are all kinds of physical activities aimed at improving

physical fitness, mental health, and social interaction between

individuals through organized participation (Sutala, 2018, p. 89). The

World Health Organization [WHO] (2019) defined physical activity refers

to “all movement including during leisure time, for transport to get to

and from places, or as part of a person's work.” Both moderate- and

vigorous-intensity physical activity improve health. Sports play a

significant role in a man’s whole development (Lacaba & Lacaba, 2020,

para. 2). The role of sport in society, particularly in schools, has been

proven across research in the past few years (Malm et al., 2019;

Westerbeek & Eime, 2021).

Background of the Study

Domville et al. (2018) presented in their study that children’s

engagement in school-based physical activity is largely determined by the

competencies of those delivering the activities (p. 935). Domville et. al

stated that opportunities delivered by generalist teachers without any

PE-specific training or by those with limited interest in sport are likely to

detract from the experiences of children (p. 938). Specifically, the

researchers have found that there are problems and issues that needs a

clear understanding arising in this topic.

Arshaf et al. (2021) stated that many universities have sports

facilities and equipment is not well run. These facilities are not managed

or maintained properly at all by physical educators or sport

administrators. This has significantly hindered and decreased the

college's sports programs. Learners do not lack talent; rather, the

problem lies in their lack of belief in the necessity of sports (para. 8).

Another study from Serra et al. (2016) presented that the High-

Performance Programs (HPP) service quality ranged from moderate to

high, indicating that certain aspects needed improvement (p.183). As

such, school sports should be educational and contribute to the overall

education of student-athletes (Guo & Meyerhoefer, 2016; Milambo &

Pacho, 2021; Morris, T. et al., 2018).

The Department of Education (DepEd) implemented the Special

Program for Sports (SPS) to assist schools in increasing kids' levels of

physical activity by offering frequent, superior, and varied sports

educational initiatives. The program has a positive impact on kids'

participation in physical education in the classroom activity by offering a

wider variety of sports opportunities. Schools state that the provision of

these activities is being led by qualified sport coaches, which is raising

the caliber and fostering an improved encounter for kids.

Agot (2019) asserted that the implementation of Special Program in

Sports, it was discovered that there is no discernible variation aside from

curriculum design. In addition, instructors perceive the absence of

training facilities as the primary obstacle to programs' effective

implementation (p. 182). Also, Tabuena (2020) concluded that students

believe that the school supports academic activities more than athletic

nations. As a result, the school should support and encourage sports

through instruction, adequate training time, sports, the quantity of

trainers, and the variety and duration of sports actions as well as

information sharing (pp. 633-634).

Lastly, St. Joseph’s Institute, Inc. (SJI) support their student-

athletes through an organization called “Olympiad”, a sports club that

provides a platform to students in enhancing and developing their skills

in the different sports events. The Olympiad has been a platform for

students to join in school-based events (Paulympics), division sports

meet (SDOCCAA), and regional sports (R1AA) festivals. Olympiad has

been a gateway to create bonds with their fellow students through sports

and develop relationship among them. Being part of it has taught them

to have leadership skills unlike other experience that exists (Dumalanta,

personal communication). Challenges have surfaced in relation to

various sporting events, eliciting discontent among student-athletes

about their participation experiences. The educational institution

appears to prioritize academic pursuits, relegating sports to a secondary

position, thereby limiting opportunities for students to hone their athletic

skills (Digay, personal communication). Notably, insufficient time is

allocated for training within the campus premises (Abad, personal

communication). The quality of trainers and facilitators in certain

sporting disciplines needs enhancement (Soriano, personal

communication). Furthermore, deficiencies in sports equipment and

facilities (Martinez, personal communication), lack of financial support is

evident (Calip, personal communication), alongside a perceived lack of

backing from the administration itself (Lockey, personal communication).

This has led the researchers to determine the level of satisfaction of

City Meet Student-Athletes on Olympiad in St. Joseph’s Institute, Inc. for

the School Year 2023-2024. This study not only contributed the student-

athletes but also to the development of a new understanding regarding

the system of handling school-based clubs and organizations.

Framework of the Study

This study was anchored on the following theories: Astin’s

Involvement Theory and the Kolb’s experiential learning theory. Also, the

study used Input-Process-Output (IPO) Method.

Student Involvement theory, developed by Alexander W. Astin in

1984, determines the maximum growth and learning to occur the

student must be actively engaged on their campus (Duncan, 2016). The

amount of commitment and engagement that students have in

extracurricular clubs is directly related to how happy they are with them.

Students are likely to be happier when they participate in club activities

more fully and actively.

The experiential learning theory, credited to David Kolb in 1984,

draws inspiration from other notable theorists such as Jean Piaget, Kurt

Lewin, and John Dewey (Western Governors University, 2020). Kolb

places a strong emphasis on the value of engagement and introspection

during the educational process. Students may find fulfillment in

experiential learning opportunities in school-based clubs, where they can

put their knowledge and abilities to use in real-world situations.

Review of Literature

The following were the summaries of the professional literature and

studies reviewed by the researchers. These literature and studies

provided enlightenment and clear insights which guided the researcher

in the overall conceptualization of the study.

Philippine Sports Festival for Students

The Department of Education [DepEd] (2023), specifically the

Schools Division of Candon City have conducted the division-based

selection of athletes, through the Candon City Athletic Association Meet,

to select athletes to represent the division in the Region 1 Athletic

Association Meet (R1AA) (DepEd Memo No.005, s. 2023). The goal of the

sports festival was to: (1) Encourage school sports and physical

education as essential components of the K–12 Basic Education

Curriculum and as a sign of the schools' dedication to helping students

reach their maximum potential so they can grow into responsible,

successful, and competitive people; (2) Use athletic facilities and the

neighborhood as an extension of the classroom to help students reach

their full potential, improve their attitudes and values, and become better

citizens by helping them develop their knowledge and abilities in sports

as well as other areas; (3) Encourage self-control, good sportsmanship,

friendship, togetherness, and collaboration among all players.

There are six types of sports in the event for secondary level

namely: Measurable Sports (Archery, Athletics, and Swimming); Team

Sports (Baseball, Basketball, Basketball (3x3), Football, Futsal, Softball,

speak Takraw, and Volleyball); Racket Games (Badminton, Table Tennis,

and Lawn Tennis); Combative Sports (Arnis, Boxing, Taekwondo,

Wrestling, and Wushu); Other Sports (Billiards, Chess, and Gymnastics);

Demonstration Sports (Dance Sports and Pencak Silat).

Under DepEd Memorandum No. 035, s. 2023, specifically on

Enclosure No. 1, there are required number of student-athletes that may

participate in the different public and private schools of Candon City

under the technical guidelines of Palarong Pambansa. For measurable

sports, there should be no more than 4 archers for Archery, 8 players for

Athletics, and varied number of players for Swimming. For team sports,

Varied players for Baseball, not more than 12 players for Basketball, no

more than 4 players for Basketball (3x3), maximum of 18 players for

Football, 12 players for futsal, 12 boys and 5 girls for speak Takraw, and

12 players each for both Volleyball boys and girl. For Racket Games,

there should be 4 players each for both boys and girl’s category. In

combative sports, there should be 5 players for Arnis (both boys and

girls), 10 boxers for Boxing, 7 players each for both Taekwondo boys and

girls, 4 players for Wrestling, and 10 boys and 5 girls for Wushu. For the

other sports, there should be 2 players each for both Billiards and Chess’

boys and girls and 16 players for Gymnastics. Demonstration Sports

requires 4 players for Dance Sports (2 for standard, 2 for Latin; 2 male

and 2 female) and 5 players each for both Pencak Silat boys and girls.

On the Assessment on School Sports Club

In today's education, school sports clubs play a big role in shaping

students' overall growth. The researchers explored previous studies and

literature to better understand how school sports clubs contribute to the

overall educational experience, gathered insights from past research to

refine our understanding of the many ways school sports clubs make a

difference in education.

Batista et al. (2019) evaluated motivation levels of the athletes of

both sports with the basic psychological needs and life satisfaction with

the study entitled, “Practice motivation and life satisfaction of athletes of

team sports: Comparative study between adapted and regular sport”. The

study used quantitative method and used questionnaires as instrument

for the study. The results showed that basic psychological needs and

positive effects were good predictors of life satisfaction in athletes of

adapted sport.

Athletes’ satisfaction in sports clubs really matters for the success

of the program. This research paper looked at past studies to find out

what makes athletes satisfied in sports clubs. By examining existing

studies, we sought to discern patterns, insights, and best practices that

contribute to understanding of the dynamics shaping athlete

contentment in the realm of sports club participation.

The study of Thomas and Ti (2019), entitled “Athlete satisfaction of

university level basketball players in Kerala”, assessed the degree of

satisfaction of both male and Keralan women who play collegiate

basketball. There are 96 basketball players in the sample, both male and

female. Those who play basketball be affiliated with many institutions

throughout four universities in the state of Kerala. The university team

members that were chosen from the intercollegiate basketball games

served as the subjects. The results showed that among the male

basketball players the MG University reported as the highest degree of

satisfaction followed by those at Kerala and Calicut University.

Meanwhile, the University with the highest degree of satisfaction among

its female basketball players is MG University while Kannur University's

female basketball players scored the lowest.

Contreira et al. (2019) studied the “Basic Psychological Needs and

Sports Satisfaction Among Brazilian Athletes and Coaches: The Mediating

Role of the Dyadic Relationship” in Brazil to analyze the role of coach-

athlete relationship in the satisfaction of basic psychological needs and

sport satisfaction of Brazilian coaches and athletes. Quantitative method,

survey research design was used in this study. Results showed that

athletes feel engaged and connected to their social environment, they are

more likely to present higher levels of satisfaction with their sport, which

reveals how interpersonal relationships established in sport practices are

intervening factors for athletic satisfaction.

Zheng and Ji (2021) in "Analysis of the Intervention Effect and

Self-Satisfaction of Sports Dance Exercise on the Psychological Stress of

College Students" investigated the impact of sports dance exercise on the

psychological stress of college students and their levels of satisfaction.

Data was collected through self-report questionnaires and analyzed

using descriptive method to identify factors contributing to satisfaction

and dissatisfaction among participants. Results have shown that

participants often experience dissatisfaction due to stress, pressure, and

diminished self-esteem. These negative effects overshadow the benefits

and contribute to overall dissatisfaction among participants. Factors

such as poor quality of instruction, inadequate practice facilities,

negative competition experiences, and a negative social environment

exacerbate dissatisfaction.

men with amenities connected to athletics. It offered proof that female

student-athlete satisfaction may be adversely affected by perceived

unfairness with locker rooms. This implies that basketball male student-

athletes have a high level of satisfaction when it comes to the services of

the school than the female student-athletes. These results offer more

proof that women place a higher value on perceived equality than men

do.

The research on the satisfaction levels of high school athletes gives

us a broad understanding, but there are gaps that need exploring. One

key gap is the lack of focus on how satisfied student-athletes are

specifically with their sports clubs. While some studies cover areas like

disabled athletes or the coach-athlete relationship, they don't delve

deeply into this aspect. There's also inconsistent information about how

satisfied athletes is with things like training facilities and financial

support.

Furthermore, certain research methods, like surveys, haven't been

used to their full potential, limiting our insights. Additionally, we haven't

thoroughly examined the satisfaction levels within each sports club. This

research aims to fill these gaps by investigating the overall satisfaction of

high school athletes and identifying which sports clubs have the highest

and lowest satisfaction rates.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents a discussion of the research design, sources

of data, population and locale of the study, research instrument and the

analysis and interpretation of data to answer the research problems

accurately and comprehensively.

Research Design

This study employed the quantitative approach and used the

survey research design. Survey design is defined as the “means for

gathering information about the characteristics, actions, or opinions of a

large group of people”. There are three distinguishing characteristics of

survey research. First, survey research is used to quantitatively describe

specific aspects of a given population (target population and survey

population). Second, the data required for survey research are collected

from people and are, therefore, subjective. Lastly, survey research uses a

selected portion of the population from which the findings can later be

generalized back to the population. (Dangal, 2021)

Quantitative research is referred to as the process of collecting and

analyzing numerical data. The methodology helped find patterns,

themes, and cause-effect relationships between the variables being

studied (Voxco, 2021). The researchers selected the quantitative research

as the method as it is the ideal process of obtaining accurate and reliable

data. The researchers identified and explained the level of satisfaction of

the Olympiad to the high school student-athletes. Thus, the researcher

found that this design as the most appropriate for the study.

Population and Locale of the Study

The respondent of this study was composed of 128 SJIan student-

athletes of St. Joseph's Institute Inc. for the school year 2023 - 2024.

The sample of the study was the whole population with a retrieval rate of

100% (128/128).

They were chosen because they have joined the Candon City

Athletic Association (CCAA) Meet as one of the sports festivities division-

based activities. The respondents have joined in the different 17 sports

events included in the CCAA Meet on January 12 to 14, 2024.

Research Instrument

The researchers have utilized the 4-point Likert scale proposed by

Rensis Likert (1932) to assess the students’ satisfaction and agreement

with the school sports club. The researchers adapted and slightly revised

the content of the questionnaire of Athlete Satisfaction Questionnaire

(ASQ), Basic Needs Satisfaction Sport Scale (BNSSS), Questionnaire for

the evaluation of sports services (EPOD2), and Sports Club Participation

Motivation Scale.

The ASQ of P. Chelladurai and H. A. Riemer's (1997) classifies

facets of athlete satisfaction, consisting of 56-items utilized to assess

psychological dimensions of athlete satisfaction with their experiences.

BNSSS was proposed by K. Hodge et al. (2011), aims to develop a

measure of basic needs satisfaction in sport in terms of autonomy,

competence, and relatedness. EPOD2 aims to identify the level of

students’ satisfaction with the school sports club services. (Alvarez et al.,

2013) Lastly, the Sports Club Participation Motivation Scale proposed by

M. R. Blais et al. (1995), seeks to assess the motivational processes

within sport environments.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers constructed a 20-item survey-questionnaire,

adapting and slightly revising the content of Athlete Satisfaction

Questionnaire (ASQ), Basic Needs Satisfaction Sport Scale (BNSSS),

Evaluation of sports services (EPOD2), Sports Club Participation

Motivation Scale. The researchers have utilized the 4-point Likert scale.

Then, the research statistician, the research adviser, and subject teacher

in Practical Research 2 have checked the survey-questionnaire and was

validated by a respective teacher through a formal letter and a copy of

the survey-questionnaire. Upon approval of the request to the school

principal, the researchers began to conduct the study.

The researchers conducted their instrument to 128 student

athletes in the different 14 sports event. (Basketball = 16, Archery = 3,

Athletics = 5, Billiards = 3, Chess = 4, Dance Sports = 4, Badminton = 7,

Football = 17, Futsal = 13, Lawn Tennis = 5, Volleyball = 26, Swimming =

To invoke an interest in the study, all the respondents are initially

informed about the purpose and objectives of the study through a formal

letter to take part in the research. The researchers distributed and

retrieved the survey-questionnaires on the same day of floating of the

research instrument. After which, the researchers gathered the data and

from the data gathered. Furthermore, the researchers sought to answer

the study through the analysis of the data using the descriptive analysis.

The researchers interpreted the data based on the past studies they have

found.

Data Analysis and Treatment of Data

The researchers have utilized the descriptive analysis technique

specifically the measure of central tendency or the mean as the statistical

method in the evaluation of data.

Descriptive analysis technique aimed to identify and describe

trends and variation in populations, create new measures of key

phenomena, or describe samples in studies aimed at identifying causal

effects (Dynarski et al., 2017). Measures of central tendency are

summary statistics that represent the center point or typical value of a

dataset. The mean is the arithmetic average in the descriptive analysis.

(Frost, 2024)

Also, the researchers have utilized the data categorization for the

obtained overall weighted mean.

that the student athletes are satisfied with the Olympiad (Sports Club).

This result is supported with the study of Contreira et al. (2019), they

stated that athletes feel engaged and connected to their social

environment, they are more likely to present higher levels of satisfaction

with their sport. Also, Ibarra and Pastaño (2021) supported the results as

the sports program was viewed as having very sufficient resources for

student assistance, admission/retention procedures, and planned

curriculum for sports, labor resources, and teaching materials.

Additionally, Hendrawati et al. (2020) supported the result of the

study, stating that the athletes’ motivation is directly impacted by service

quality, which also directly affects athlete’s satisfaction. The results

proved the Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory which denotes that

CONCLUSION

The researchers have concluded the following insights on the

study:

1. The students-athletes have participated in 17 sports events in the

division athletic meet. This signifies that the school provided

opportunities for the student-athletes to enhance their skills and to

obtain hand-on experiences other than being trained inside the

institution.

2. The study results indicated a generally positive satisfaction level with

the Olympiad, particularly in Participation and Involvement,

indicating a strong sense of engagement and enthusiasm among

student-athletes towards sports activities. While Financial Services

exhibit room for improvement with certain aspects receiving lower

satisfaction ratings, indicating deficiencies in transparency and

support in financial transactions and sports events.

3. Basketball emerges as the sport with the highest overall satisfaction

among student-athletes obtaining a mean of 3.39, highlighting the

great number of services rendered for their development. Meanwhile,

Dance sports appeared to be the sports with the lowest satisfaction

mean of 2.66, signifying poor quality of instruction, inadequate

practice facilities, and lack of support from peers.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The results of the study have been significantly positive when it comes

to the various services of the sports club, but it is suggested that the

school/institution should:

1. expand sport events’ options for all, create an inclusive

environment in terms of sports events, enhance the administrative

structure when it comes to the sports club being implemented;

2. provide proper schedule of training: elect or inquire professional

trainers with a deep background of the sport; enhance current

sports facilities; render financial assistance to student-athletes;

and allocate funds for the facilities and equipment of the other

sports event; and

3. implement the Special Program for Sports (SPS); evaluate the

satisfaction of the students and construct a comprehensive

framework on sports activities; prioritize sports that lacks

satisfaction to provide the needs of the students for their

development in their extra-curricular activities.
