ESTIMATION OF BUBBLE POINT AND

DEW POINT OF HYDROCARBON
MIXTURE USING ASPEN PLUS
Problem Statement:
Compute the bubble point temperature at 18 bar of the following hydrocarbon
mixture using RK-Soave property method. Assume the mixture inlet temperature
of 25 deg C, pressure of 5 bar and flow rate of 120 kmol/hr.
Component Mole fraction
C1 0.05
C2 0.1
C3 0.15
i-C4 0.1
n-C4 0.2
i-C5 0.25
n-C5 0.15

Definitions:
 Bubble point temperature is the temperature at which liquid forms the first
bubble of vapor and marks the beginning of vaporization of the liquid.
 Dew point temperature is the temperature at which the first drop of dew is
formed from vapor and marks the beginning of condensation of the liquid.

Balance equations:
Furthermore, we have material balances for the whole flash unit, and for one of
the components and an energy balance based on the enthalpies (hF, hL, HV) of
the various streams:
Material Balance:
F=V+L
F z = V y + Lx
Energy Balance:
F hF + Q = LhL + V HV

In this particular case, the mass and energy balance data as obtained in the
report are as follows:

Bubble point simulation run:

IN OUT RELATIVE DIFF
TOTAL BALANCE
MOLE(KMOL/HR) 120.000 120.000 0.00000
MASS(KG/HR) 6806.49 6806.49 0.400865E-15
ENTHALPY(CAL/SEC) -0.114825E+07 -0.115249E+07 0.368001E-02

Dew point simulation run:

IN OUT RELATIVE DIFF

TOTAL BALANCE
MOLE(KMOL/HR) 120.000 120.000 -0.236848E-15
MASS(KG/HR) 6806.49 6806.49 0.00000
ENTHALPY(CAL/SEC) -0.114825E+07 -955539. -0.167832

Procedure:

 To compute the bubble point and dew point of the given hydrocarbon
mixture, we use ASPEN plus version 12.1 platform.
 To perform a simulation, we need to open ASPEN plus and open a new
simulation tab.
 The first step is to setup the title as “Bubble and dew points”.
 We should then determine the specifications of the components. In this
experiment the components are C1, C2, C3, i-C4, n-C4, i-C5, n-C5.
 The next step is to specify the method we are going to use. In this case it is
RK Soave property method.
 In the simulation environment, develop a flow diagram by selecting flash 2
(in separators) and add stream inlet and outlets to it.
 Specify the feed conditions, Temperature = 25 deg C, Pressure = 5 bar, Total
flow=mole, Total flow rate=120 kmol/hr, Composition= mole frac as
0.05,0.1,0.15,0.1,0.2,0.25,0.15 respectively to the individual components.
 Similarly, the flash drum conditions are mentioned as pressure = 18 bar. The
vapor fraction is set as 0 in order to find the bubble point of the mixture. For
the next simulation, the vapor fraction is set as 1 to find the dew point of the
mixture.
 We now run the simulation and the stream results are checked. The bubble
point is found out to be 42.834 deg C and dew point is found out to be
113.22 deg C.

Results:
BUBBLE POINT
OUTLET TEMPERATURE C 42.834
OUTLET PRESSURE BAR 18.000
HEAT DUTY CAL/SEC -4241.2
VAPOR FRACTION 0.0000

DEW POINT
OUTLET TEMPERATURE C 113.22
OUTLET PRESSURE BAR 18.000
HEAT DUTY CAL/SEC 0.19271E+06
VAPOR FRACTION 1.0000
