Titel: Insulation resistance measurement at rotor windings

Title

1. Background

1.1. Insulation resistance

The Insulation resistance Ri (also known as IR in IEEE 43) is an important measure for
assessment of an insulations condition. As the measurement can be performed within
short time with a mobile measurement device, it is regularly performed before all high
voltage tests.
Low values can be caused by a wet insulation or dewing on the one hand or by defects in the
insulation on the other hand. Further background information can be found in the
international standard IEC 60034-27-4.

2. Equipment requirements

2.1. Insulation resistance meter

An insulation resistance meter with direct display of the resistance value shall be used as
measurement device. The device must be operated by battery or rechargeable battery
and an integrated high voltage source must be included which can generate a direct
voltage (DC) with the level of the below noted test voltage at minimum. The voltage
should not vary more than 0.1% over time and should be adjustable in steps of 100 V or
less.
Especially the possible operation of the device at the environmental conditions (e.g. air
humidity) is to be checked.

2.2. Thermometer/ Hygrometer

A measurement device with combined temperature and humidity measurement which
calculates the dew point temperature is needed to get the ambient conditions.
For determination of the winding temperature a thermometer is needed which has a long
sensor tip thus allowing to measure inside the rotor.

It is possible to perform both measurements with one single device if two separate
temperature sensors can be connected or stable temperature and ambient conditions
apply between the measurements of dew point and winding temperature.

3. Preparation
Clean surfaces of the insulation material and the winding are prerequisites for high insulation
resistances. Oil or dust should be removed as far as possible.
The temperature of the rotor body and winding must be higher than the dew point of the ambient
air to avoid the condensation of humidity at the surfaces.
All external components have to be disconnected from the winding (e.g. lift slip ring brushes,
decoupling).

4. Connections
The following figure shows the connection of the measurement device with the rotor winding
during the measurement. The winding has a negative polarity against ground.
Connection cables for the non grounded side should be placed in such a way, that they do not get
in contact with grounded parts.

5. Measurement parameters
The measurement is always performed with DC voltage.
For service measurements the measurement shall be carried out at 500 V, with connected exciter
only at 250 V.
The measurement time is 1 minute in all cases.

6. Measurement procedure
The temperature sensor for determination of the winding temperature is to be placed at a suitable
location and the temperature has to be recorded when the measured value is stabilized. In
addition the ambient conditions (temperature, humidity, dew point temperature) have to be
recorded.
If a condensation on the test object is impossible and the object is at least 24 hours acclimatized
within a defined testing environment (e.g. Test Field or Production), the dew point temperature
measurement may be waived. If in doubt or shorter acclimatization times are necessary the
dew point temperature measurement should be carried out. To ensure proper testing the test
objects temperature should be well above the dew point temperature.
The winding has to be grounded for 4 minutes before the measurement to allow for elimination of
residual charges. After that the measurement device has to be connected as described above.
The test voltage and measurement time has to be set at the measurement device and the
measurement has to be started. From this point the set voltage is applied to the winding and
required protection measures against touching have to be established. The measurement value

is recorded at the end of the measurement before the voltage is switched off.
After the measurement the winding has to be grounded again at least for 4 minutes (4 times the
voltage application duration).

7. Evaluation

7.1. Temperature reference

No correction of the insulation resistances is needed for temperatures between 10°C (50°F)
and 40°C (104°F).
For the temperature range between 40°C (104°F) and 60°C (140°F) the insulation resistance
for 40°C (104°F) Ri,40°C and Ri104°F is calculated from the insulation resistance Ri,
measured at temperature according to the following formula:
40  C  

Ri, 40 C  Ri ,  0.5 17  C

To calculate Ri,40°C when the temperature has been measured in °F use this equation as well.
Convert the temperature readings from °F into °C before insertion of the temperature
readings in the formula in place of .
For this purpose calculate the readings from °F into °C as follows: [°C] = 5/9([°F]-32) .
The calculated value equates to Ri104°F.

7.2. Insulation resistance

The required minimum insulation resistance is 2 M at 40°C (104°F).
