CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

Implicature have been one topic of research interests in the pragmatic studies. The notion
of implicature is explained in relation to more “direct’ expression of intention of the speaker. In
general, language has several roles, including language as a system, language as arbitrary,
language as vocal, language as symbol, language as human, and language as communication.
One function that a language has, that is as a communication device, has been a very important
role of language. In communicating to each other, people are able to express their feeling or
impression, to build relationship, to maintain relationship, and to understand many other things.
Sometimes the impression or expression of the speaker is unable to be understood by the listener.
One of the reason why the listener is unable to understand what the speaker says is because the
speaker use utterances that is intended to contrast with the term like logical implication
(Levinson;1983). Those utterances are called Implicature. Implicature is the term that refers to
what a speaker can imply, suggest, or mean as distinct from what she or he literally says
(Grice;1975).
Implicature tends to be used in conversation in a television shows such as a talk show for
instance. There are lots of talk show in television and each of them are different to another. Some
of them are meant to be serious and some of them are meant to be entertain. One of the talk show
that is popular in the world is The Oprah Winfrey Show. The Oprah Winfrey Show, often referred
to simply as Oprah, is an American syndicated talk show that aired nationally for 25 seasons
from September 8, 1986 to May 25, 2011 in Chicago, Illinois. Produced and hosted by its
namesake, Oprah Winfrey, it remains the highest-rated daytime talk show in American television
history.
In this thesis, the writer chooses the subject because the writer is interested in analyzing
the mechanism of implicature in effecting the conversation between Oprah and her guests.
Therefore the writer would take transcript of the conversation between Oprah and her guests and
analyze which the implicature of some conversations and also finds out the fulfilling and faulting
maxim and then finds the effect of it.
1.2 Statements of the Problem
The questions to be answered in this study in relation to analysis of implicature are:
1. What is the implicature indicated in conversations between Oprah and her guests?
2. What are the fulfilling and faulting maxims found in the conversations?
3. What are the effect of the fulfilling and faulting maxims to the conversation?

1.3 Objective of Study

Based on the statement of the problem dealing with the Implicature in conversations
between Oprah and her guests, the objective of the study are aimed to finds out fulfilling and
faulting maxims found in the conversations, and then finds the effect of those fulfilling and
faulting maxims towards the conversation.

1.4 Significance of Study

By doing the research about the Implicature in conversation in talk show, the writer
expects to extend and give the readers a deep comprehension to understand conversation that is
happened in a talk show. In addition, it will help student who take linguistic as their major
subject in thesis as an additional input to make further studies on conversation in a talk show.
