Analysis of Salt - IV

S. Experiment Observation Inference

No
PRELIMINARY TEST
1 Colour and appearance of the salt is Colourless Absence of Fe, Co, Ni, Cr,
noted Mn etc.
2 Solubility of the salt is noted with dil. Soluble Absence of Pb2+ and Ag+
HCl solution
3 FLAME COLOURATION Pale green flame Ba 2+ may be present
A small quantity of the substance is
made into a paste with Con. HCl and is
shown in the non-luminous flame.
4 Odour of the substance is noted No characteristic smell Absence of acetate and
ammonium ions
ANALYSIS OF ACID RADICALS (ANIONS)
1 A small quantity of the substance is No brisk effervescence Absence of Carbonate ion
treated with few drops of dill. HCl CO32-
2 A small quantity of the substance is No vinegar like smell Absence of acetate ion
rubbed with few drops of dill. H2SO4 CH3COO-
a) Pungent smelling Presence of Chloride ion
The substance is heated with few drops gas which produces white dense Cl-
3 of Con.H2SO4 fumes when a glass rod dipped
in NH4OH is introduced at the
mouth of the test tube.

Confirmation Of Chloride ion

1. Little of the salt solution is acidified White curdy ppt soluble in Presence of Chloride ion
with dil. HNO3 and few drops of AgNO3 NH4OH solution. confirmed.
solution are added and shaken well.
ANALYSIS OF BASIC READICALS (CATIONS)
Preparation of Original solution: - (OS)
A saturated solution of the substance is prepared in water (dil. HCl is used only for carbonate salts) and it is
kept as the original solution.
1 To a little of the original solution few White ppt Absence of group zero NH4+
drops of sodium carbonate solution is
added
2 Little of the original solution is acidified Nothing characteristic Absence of group I cations
with few drops of dil. HCl (Pb2+, Ag+)
3 Little of the original solution is acidified Nothing characteristic Absence of group II cations
with few drops of dil. HCl and H2S gas
is passed
4 Little of the original solution, NH4Cl and Nothing characteristic Absence of group III cations
excess of NH4OH are added.
5 Little of the original solution, NH4Cl and Nothing characteristic Absence of group IV cations
excess of NH4OH are added and H2S
gas is passed
6 Little of the original solution, NH4Cl, White ppt Presence of group V cations.
NH4OH are added. A slight excess of (Sr2+, Ba2+, Ca2+)
(NH4)2CO3 solution is also added.
Analysis of group V cations
1 To a little of the salt solution few drops Yellow ppt Presence of Ba ion
potassium chromate solution is added
Confirmation of Barium ion
1 Flame test: - Grassy green Presence of Ba2+ is confirmed
A small quantity of the substance is
made into a paste with Con.HCl and is
shown in the non-luminous flame.

RESULT

The given salt contains Cl- as acidic radical and Ba2+ as basic radical.
