3.1.3 COMPARING PLOT

PLOT LINE

HOW TO HOOK A HUSBAND

Starts with introducing EXPOSITION Mariah as a nasi berlauk seller at Molo. She is a widowed. All men at Molo will have breakfast at her stall. Imam of Molo get to know RISING ACTION about her. He fall in love with Mariah.

Start with introducing Malar as a 25 years old unmarried girl who born with five siblings. All her sisters married except her.

The similarity between the plot of both short stories is that both story begin with introducing the main character as a women who is a not having a life partner. This is exposition of both stories. The rising action in both stories also have similarity. In both stories the male character is being introduced where Imam meets Mariah and Malar meets Muthu. Climax, falling action and resolution in both stories are about whether the main character and the male character get together or not. In both stories they get married and start a new married life. So, even though the situation in both stories are different but the plot is almost the same.

thinking deep in something.

The similarities between the two short stories are both having women as their main character. The second main character in these short stories are men who are finally becoming the main characters husbands. The differences are the main character in Mariah did not thought that she will get married. But the main character in How to Hook a Husband wanted to get married with someone and get settled in life. The second different is that the main character in Mariah has no connection at first with the minor characters but the main character in How to Hook a Husband has connection with the second minor character that is her parents.

3.3 THEME (S) Theme of a story is the central idea of the story. It tells us what the story is about. Normally, short story will only has one theme. But sometimes, some short story will have more than one theme. 3.3.1 MARIAH The theme of Mariah is sacrificial love.. Cik Yam agreed to the second marriage of her husband because she loved him so much and did not want him to be sad. Her

husband, Imam was just thinking of himself. He already had a good wife but he was not satisfied because Cik Yam cant being able to produce a heir for him. So, thats why Imam asked Cik Yam to marry Mariah.

3.3.2 HOW TO HOOK A HUSBAND The theme of How to Hook A Husband is think deeply before decide but after make decision do not ever compare it with others. This theme is shown by Malars character. She did not think much before she get married with Muthu. For her as long as she get married is enough. After she got to know that her husband is just a peon in a bank, she accept him as he is. She did not argue anything about her husbands work neither with her husband nor her parents. This shows that she accept the reality as it is. 3.3.3 COMPARING THEMES IN MARIAH AND HOW TO HOOK A HUSBAND The theme of Mariah is sacrificial love while the The theme of How to Hook A Husband is think deeply before decide but after make decision do not ever compare it with others.

3.4 SETTING Normally there are two type of setting in each story. The settings are place setting and time setting. SETTING PLACE MARIAH Housing area. Mariahs stall, Imams house TIME Morning, evening and night. HOW TO HOOK A HUSBAND Housing area, Ambalavans house, Muthus room Morning, evening.

In conclusion it can be said both stories took place at housing areas. There is no specific place for both stories but there are some places like home, road side that are common in both stories. For example, in Mariah, the Imam went about his usual business and came home at 12.30 to have his lunch... and in How to Hook A Husband,...dinner every Sunday at Malars house... There is no specific period for both stories. The writers just mentioned as either morning, evening or night. For example, in Mariah the first sentence is it was seven in the morning... and in How to Hook A Husband it was a quarter to five.... 3.5 MORAL VALUES Moral values are the messages that a writer wanted to tell us from his / her story. 3.5.1 MARIAH Think of our partners need. Cik Yam could have said no for Imams request. But she said yes because she understood her husbands need and feeling. Do not hide anything from the one we love. Imam could have married Mariah withut Cik Yams permission and knowledgement. But he did not do like that. He waits until Cik Yam says yes.

3.5.2 HOW TO HOOK A HUSBAND Do not judge a book by its cover. Malars family thought that Muthu is a bank manager after saw him bringing suit case to bank. In reality he is just a peon. Do not think again after made a decision. Malar got to know that her husband is a peon. But she did not make it as a problem. She decided to continue her life with him. 3.5 COMPARING MORAL VALUES There are many moral values that we can adopt in both short stories. In the Mariah, the moral values are more general. For instance, we ought to not hide anything from the one we love. Whereas, in the story of How to Hook A husband, the moral values are more specific and suitable for nowadays generations. For instance, we should not judge a person just from their facial appearance. Moreover, we also should stand with our own decisions.

The short story that I Iike best is How To Hook A Husband by Damayanti. This story is about a 25 years women who has not get married. Her mother not pleased with her because she was not married but all her sisters does. After a while she fall in love with Muthu, a new man in their neighbourhood. Every morning he will bring a suit case to bank. Everyone in Malars family wanted Malar to marry him because they thought he is a bank manager. But actually he is just a peon in a bank. After married only she got to know this thing but she did not avoid him. I like this story because from this story I have learnt a lesson that we should grateful with what we are having like Malar. This story also teach us not to judge a book its cover like Malars parents have done. So in my opinion this story is just a common story in todays life which has lots of moral values. So, it is suitable for everyone. That is why I like this story.

In conclusion, we can say that both stories Mariah and How To Hook A Husband are Malaysian type stories. Both have some similarities and differences in plot, characters, theme, setting and moral values. It is suitable for every range of people. Both stories have many moral values. Everyone should read these short stories.

First of all, I would like to thank Pn. Malathy for his personal concern on myself. This assignment is group work. Before I started doing this writing assignment, I was given a briefing by Pn. Malathy and that was really clear enough. As it was advised, after finding a related materials for my assignment ,I refer her to make sure either I can proceed with that topic or have to find other materials. Luckily, the one we have chosen is accepted. After that, I drew an outline to make sure I myself knew what I am going to write about. I did my part and also .showed that outline to her so that I can do corrections in terms of arrangements of the content Before I start doing the assignment, I started writing draft and I cannot elaborate on certain ideas and do not know how to link those ideas with suitable examples. When I submitted the draft, she wrote remarks at which part I have to do corrections and how to relate the main ideas with examples. That was really useful for us before we came out with our final total budget. With God gracious, I was able to finish done my presentation within the time given. I hope that our final work satisfies the examiner.

Thank you very much.
