4.1. Health & Safety

The Works Engineer is responsible to brief and organize the training for the workers with support
and in coordination with the Safety Team and the site Manager.
A toolbox needs to be held once per week with different subject and 5 minute pre task trainings
before every start of the works. All trainings need to be documented. Forms are available with the
safety team.

A 5 minute pre task briefing must be held by the Works Engineer with the workers every time
before to start the work and the following questions need to be asked and action to be taken:
 Tell men tasks in steps.
 Who does what?
 What are the hazards and risks?
 Which measures to take?
 Which PPE to wear and does everybody have the suitable PPE?
 Does everyone understand his job?
 What went wrong yesterday and what can be improved today?
 Plastic caps shall be installed on all protruding bars such as the pile starter bars.
 In addition to the mandatory site PPE, PPE shall be adapted considering the protection against
product used such as glue for all workers in contact with these products.

4.2. Access

 General access for vehicles to the working area is the existing site roads within the
construction area and temporary access ramps.
 Pedestrian access area is not an issue as there is sufficient space at the working area.
 The site needs to arrange sufficient space for maneuvering of excavators, trucks ...etc.

10. DESCRIPTION OF WORKS/METHODOLOGY

10.1 . Duct Manufacturing:

1- Rectangular duct are prefabricated from galvanized sheet metal ( according to approved gages
& thicknesses table for different duct sizes) using Autofold CNC machines for straight duct & plasma
CNC cutting machines for duct fittings.

2- Each rectangular duct will be assembled using Pittsburgh lock longitudinal seam.

3- Rectangular duct pieces will be assembled with each others using transverse joints according to
approved joints table for different duct sizes.

4- Elbow vanes will be fabricated from the same gauge of elbows and the number & radius of these
vanes will be determined according to (Elbow vanes SMACNA chart based on the full radius elbow law).

5- Transitions will be fabricated and installed taking transition angle as 22.5° max for diverging and 30°
max for converging.

10.2 . Duct pre-installation:

 A pre-start meeting prior to the commencement of the works will take place with the site
engineer, H&S responsible, QC engineer and foreman in charge to address the following:
 Ensure that notification to start.
 Ensure that the area has been surveyed as per approved drawings.
 Ensure that the installation area is clean.
 Ensure that materials are as per approved material submittal and inspected on site
by consultant.
 Ensure that adequate number of tradesmen and proper tools are present.

 Ensure that latest approved shop drawings for this installation is present, and all
personnel are working off the same drawing.
 Ensure that area is safe to carry out the work.
 Area for materials preparation / fabrication work shop for ducting installation has
been identified and procedure will be in place.
 Temporary DBs are provided and inspected regularly by electrician prior to execution
of works.

10.3. Installation of ductwork

1- Marking wires are pulled for lining the duct supports then threaded rods are rammed in the
concrete ceiling using expansion anchors from each side of the duct according to ducts different
sizes.

2- Spacing between trapeze hanger supports, support rod diameters & support angle sizes will be
determined according to (approved horizontal duct supports table for different duct sizes).

3- Galvanized or painted supports angles will be fixed to the rods with nuts & washers according to
the bottom of duct level shown in approved shop drawings coordinated with other trades.

4- Fabricated and assembled duct pieces will be manually raised from the floor level to the scaffold
level, and then installed on the trapeze hanger supports preinstalled before.

5- Transition, elbow locations in the duct line are taken into account while installing the duct line.

6- Branch opening locations will be taken into account in the main duct line already installed.

7- Branch takeoffs will be installed in the previous locations using clinch lock to fix the take off in
the main duct opening , the take off angle will be fabricated taking θ = 45° and takeoff length as
(4" inclined + 2" straight) ( according to SMACNA standards ).

8- Duct risers will be fixed to the riser walls at each floor slab using supports angles seamed with
each others forming frames fixed to walls with anchors according to (approved vertical duct supports
table for different duct sizes).

9- Volume dampers supplied from approved supplier will be installed in main ducts and branches
where shown on approved shop drawings.

10- Fire dampers will be supplied from approved supplier will be installed on ducts penetrating fire
rated walls or riser walls or concrete slabs as shown on approved shop drawings.

11- Air outlets locations will be marked on the false ceiling according to (the approved shop
drawings coordinated with reflected ceiling plans), then duct necks or flexible ducts will be
fabricated or supplied respectively, then installed according to air outlets neck sizes & types. In

case of flexible ducts, it will be connected to main duct round collar from one extremity and to
plenum box round collar from the other extremity using locally supplied straps.

12- Air outlets supplied from approved supplier will be installed and fixed to the duct necks or
plenums using screws or bridges depending on outlet types.

13- Ducts will be connected to all fans and air supply units after their installation using approved duct
flexible connector.

10.4 . Ductwork testing:

Duct sealing will be done after duct installation using the approved duct sealant (according to the
suitable sealing class based on SMACNA standards and duct pressure class) in order to prevent air
leakage.
As long as Duct Pressure Class is (3” w.g. or lower), so there is no need to verify leakage control by
field testing (according to SMACNA duct construction standards section 1.10) and only light visual
test will be performed on all duct lines to insure good sealing.
For Duct Pressure Class (4” w.g. or higher), smoke visual leakage test will be performed on all duct
lines to insure good sealing.
