December is the month of festive Malv flights. It has been a tradition for years that we first fly Joulupukki, the
Finnish Santa, from Lapland to Hungary. His arrival is an important event primarily for children but also for
us, adults, since his coming brings the message that Christmas is approaching. Our other festive flight takes
off directly before Christmas when we take gifts packed in shoeboxes for orphans in Transylvania. Malv
participates in the Hungarian Baptist Aids Christmas charity campaign with its Shoebox Flight to Trgu
Mure. Together with our humanitarian aid partners all Malvs colleagues are proud to be able to contribute
with our surprises flown through the clouds to add to the joyful festive holiday of several thousand children.
In addition to celebration, the last month of the year also signifies plenty of work. Alongside servicing the
increased traffic at a high standard, two further developments in addition to already existing ones are being
launched: we are extending the range of payment options when booking online as well as introducing our

destination in Budapest (return journey possible).

Marcell Jnoshalmi nemes was one of the most noted art collectors in early

-century Hungary, as well as one of that periods most contradictory figures
whose extensive activity as an art patron and collector became legendary al-
ready in his lifetime. During his career he donated several valuable works of art
to the Museum of Fine art s, including El Grecos the penitent Mary Magdalene
and dm Mnyokis portrait of Ferenc rkczi, the latter being regarded as a
Hungarian national treasure. He also made donations to several other Hungarian
and foreign institutions, such as the prado in Madrid and the louvre in paris.

the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, marking
its 60
th
anniversary this year, is celebrating
christmas with a gala show. in its jubilee
season it is presenting two productions Ecser
wedding Dance and Dream time, respectively
the ensembles first and most recent show.
the two productions separated by six decades
feature past and present in one evening. Ecser
wedding Dance, performed on more than a
1000 occasions, is an emblematic traditional
choreography of Hungarian folk dance on
stage, while Dream time is a more eclectic,
contemporary piece which, in addition to
tradition, includes the post-modern character
of todays pop music.

20 September and is a big surprise even for those who are well familiar

cosmic city to Shanghai bridges, Friedmans oeuvre includes
numerous forms and ideas that have strongly affected archi-
tectural discourse and inspired generations of architect s and
artist s. yona Friedman never talks about just architecture or
urban studies, his ideas encompass a vision of society which
could flourish amidst mobile constructions in a spatial city. it

dismountable, transferable and transformable according to the

yet undeservedly he is relatively unknown in Hungary.
This year he has been touring with his Liszt 200 World
Wide With Balatoni international concert series and
though officially it was not part of Hungarys Year of Liszt
one of the host locations was Budapest. His final virtuoso
performance took place in Vrsmarty Square in early
October, where in the presence of a spontaneously formed
crowd of classical music fans he gave a surprise concert
featuring some rarely heard works of Ferenc Liszt.
How far have you got with the Liszt 200 World Wide tour?
Weve done several concerts and are organising the
next stages. We are planning for the tour to take in
numerous locations from South America to Japan,
though adequate sponsorship is still not finalised.
Hungary is enormously lagging behind when it
comes to truly appreciating the greatest Hungarian
composer although its true that the events of the
current Liszt Year have somewhat countered that.
Isnt Liszt a good enough brand to sell in Hungary?
Lots of people know next to nothing about Liszt, not
even now after the Liszt Year. In recent times there
has been a distorted, false image of Liszt as a woman-
iser and adventurer. The truth is quite different. Liszt
is to piano playing what Euclid is to geometry. His
music discloses the natural laws of the pianos work-
ings. The technical breakthrough he accomplished in
the 1830s and 1840s is without parallel in the history
of piano playing. All later schools derived from his
achievements. The words of Thomas Mann are par-
ticularly appropriate for Liszt music is the myste-
rious manifestation of the highest attainment, some-
thing divine . In addition he was an exceptionally
magnanimous person. Throughout his life he per-
formed at innumerable charity concerts and endless-
ly struggled on behalf of the most diverse good causes
and people. Think of his activities following the great
Pest flood. On hearing about the tragedy he immedi-
ately launched a charity concert series with the result
that huge donations, mainly from private sources,
were gathered for the benefit of flood victims. He
also generously supported to list just a few the Na-
tional Conservatoire, construction of the Basilica in
Pest, the Beethoven monument in Bonn and another

ra ugyanezen programban.

in memory of Bach in Eisenach. None of these would
have come about without Liszt. Its incredible but
Cologne Cathedral is another example. He gave nu-
merous donations to hospitals, schools, charitable
institutions and to people who had fallen on hard
times. He encouraged and promoted great composers
who later turned against him, and we know how he
supported his students. The list could go on.
You are also involved with charity work. More than once
youve played in Hungary to the homeless and you regu-
larly give benefit concerts for the starving children of
Africa and Asia.
Yes, at the invitation of my friend Gbor Ivnyi Ive
played several times at the so-called Warm Street
shelter and in 2003 after a German-Swiss concert
tour I received my first request to give a benefit con-
cert in aid of starving children in the Third World un-
der the auspices of the UN World Food Programme.
Afterwards I was informed by letter how many
school meals they could ensure throughout the year
for African children due to the income generated by
my concert. It was a very good feeling. I was asked to
participate in a longer series in the same programme.
Apparently you are devoted to Liszt above all else
Indeed, but also to many other great composers. But
its true that I feel its my mission to perform Liszt
works which others never, or very rarely, include in
their programmes.

andr kertsz along with robert capa, martin munkacsi and
lszl moholy-nagy belonged to a generation of hungarian
artists who tried their fortune in the west in the 20s and 30s of
the last century. Urged by his fiance, in 1925 kertsz left hun-
gary where he had been working in an office because he couldnt
earn a living from photography. he arrived in Paris at the age of
31 without being able to speak a single word in french. Yet he
greatly enjoyed the life of artists in montparnasse, photographing
mondrians studio, eisenstein and chagall. he was also
commissioned to do work for french magazines. he never took
pictures in a servile manner, considering what was expected of
him, but rather used the commissions in his own manner. when
asked to take a portrait of the new editor-in-chief of the noted
magazine vu, kertsz dragged the serious, suited gentleman to
the fun fair and sat him in front of the funhouse mirror. this idea
gave birth to distortion, his series of nudes photographed with
the help of distorting mirrors for a french womens magazine.
when years later he had to take photographs of ballet dancers he
ignored the stage and took them to a nearby playground where
he could catch the childrens wide-eyed, reverential expressions.
the exhibition follows kertszs periods in hungary, Paris and his
long stay in america, from early photographs taken during world
war i to colour polaroids made in the 80s. the curators have
focussed on smaller subjects alongside techniques and themes
within the major periods in the artists life for example, kertszs
ground-breaking portraits of artists or his treatment of loneliness
in his old age.
his works were divided into three parts after his death he left
his negatives to the french state where he spent the happiest
years of his life, the majority of the countless prints made when
he was in the Us ended up in american collections and he gave
hungary pictures that had been exhibited, as well as signed
authors copies. the first retrospective of his works in europe
opened in the jeu de Paume in Paris only last year. the current
exhibition in budapest presenting 250 photos and newspapers
is accompanied by a display of photographs endre schwanner
made of kertsz.

budapest to appear at a live concert in hungary for the first time

poser, model and fashion designer already has sales of 30 million
albums to her credit. she has had a total of 15 grammy nomina-
tions four this year and so far has received three grammy, and
dozens of american, mtv and world music awards. she is the

With his wealth of 100 million euros, his Europa
Corp film production and distribution company,
and career as a French-American screen writer,
producer and director, Besson appears as a wizard
of success on the public stage. Behind the scenes,
however, he is devoted to the underwater world (his
parents were scuba diving instructors) and tales of
treasure hunting, while being sensitively drawn to
the human soul. Besson is an adult with a childs
disposition. He began writing poems and diaries as

a teenager, allowing his fantasy to lead him into ad-
ventures when he read his grandfathers secret books.
Danger and mysticism have always attracted him
legends, magicians and witch-doctors he heard about
from his grandparents.
During his career of nearly 30 years Besson has creat-
ed an imaginary world with a unique atmosphere. He
was the first to introduce into European cinema the
genres of sci-fi (The Fifth Element), the female gang-
ster film (Nikita) and urban action movies (the Taxi
series), all made to the demanding standards of Ameri-
can movies.
As an adolescent he was inspired by the cinema, most-
ly by John Waynes Western classics. At the age of 17 he
was already involved with castings and shootings, and
he had been an extra and 2

assistant director before
he made his debut with a short
film of his own. It was then that
he met Jean Reno, also a begin-
ner in movie terms. They would
later become close buddies.
Bessons noisy debut came with
the black and white, silent (!)
science fiction film The Last
Battle. With this apocalyptic
tale he was dubbed the new
promise of French art cin-
ema at the age of 24. He con-
tinued with a romantic melo-
drama, Subway, featuring
Isabelle Adjani and Christopher
Lambert. Meanwhile he shot commercials with Jean
Reno in Miami. He managed to conquer north Ameri-
ca with a cult film, The Big Blue. Following this most
personal Besson opus he shifted partly to cinematic
experiments and partly to Hollywood stereotypes. He
was married to actress Anne Parillaud when he cre-
ated the role of gangster for her in La femme Nikita. At
the time of Leon: The Professional Besson was living
with the teenage star Maiwenn Le Besco and he wrote
the role of Mathilda for her, but in the end Natalie Port-
man played the part. His intention with both films
was to take a pot shot at the French upper-middle class.
Reno can be grateful to Besson for opening the door to
Hollywood for him with his charismatic roles in The
Big Blue and Leon: The Professional.
Arguably, the apocalyptic sci-fi The Fifth Element with
the American action hero Bruce Willis, costume and
production designer Jean-Paul Gaultier and, last but
not least, with Columbia TriStar producing the film
was a watershed in Bessons career and with Milla
Jovovich another romance was added to Bessons pa-
lette. He wrote The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc
with Jovovich in mind, who he had married meanwhile.
However, turning the Joan of Arc myth into a martial
action movie pleased neither critics nor cinema-goers.
The setback Besson suffered as a director and husband
(Jovovich left him after two years of marriage) made
him change yet again. He dug out from his drawer an

genre of French action comedies he has made
four taxi films to date. At the same time he went
full steam ahead as a producer, his script of Wasabi

Luc Besson, nearing 50, has been reborn as a direc-

Rome is good in all seasons, but
the atmosphere in December is
quite special. Thats not only due
to the relatively mild weather visi-
tors from more northern regions
hope for unless some trendy
globalised climate change hits in,
you can walk around in a light
coat or even just an la Italian
pullover with a scarf around your
neck but also because the Italian
capital has winter celebrations
with the longest traditions. Al-
ready in pagan Rome the period
from mid December to early Janu-
ary was a time for merrymaking,
thanks to the winter solstice and
Saturnalia celebrations, such that
the revelry continued right up to
Calends, the first day of the Ro-
man new year. After Christianity
had become the official religion of
the empire the celebrations start-
ed on 8 December, the Feast of the
Immaculate Conception, and con-
tinued until 6 January, the Epiph-
any. Thus for Italians the festive
period lasts a whole month. Its a
joy to participate.
In December the Christmas de-
votions typically overlap with
an avid shopping fever. Larger
crowds than usual flood the citys
shopping streets bathed in col-
oured lights, stumbling upon
rock, gospel and church music
groups, clowns and puppet shows
in the squares where there are all
types of life-size cribs and carol
singers. For more than a century
the most famous Christmas scrim-
mage sorry, market has been in
the Piazza Navona. The Mercato
dellEpifania or Epiphany Market
here lasts a month. In the year
86 the Emperor Domitian had a
stadium built on this site to hold
15,000, which gives an idea of how
many people pack this wonderful-
ly beautiful square in Rome.
All kinds of market goods impor-
tant for the Christmas atmos-
phere can be found in the Piazza
Navona: skilfully and cleverly cre-
ated handicraft gifts, wooden toys,
everything necessary for nativity
scenes and decorations. Countless
street musicians, portrait paint-
ers, craftsmen, acrobats and jug-

glers hang around the multitude
of stalls, stands and tents. The
spectacle and the atmosphere are
magical and enchanting.
Nevertheless, at the same time
the Roman Christmas marks
what is perhaps the most beauti-
ful and most human Christian
feast, the birth of Jesus. Thus
for believers Christmas in Rome
is connected to the Vatican for
those who months before bought
tickets for the Midnight Mass.
While in the city the Christmas
of the consumer society holds
sway and while the Italians are
hardly church-goers, at Christ-
mas the whole of Italy builds
cribs and this tradition has lost
none of its force. Thus the sacred
and the profane live side by side.
In St. Peters Square the worlds
largest Christian Basilica wel-
comes believers and non-believ-
ers alike. It can hold 60,000 people,
though on Christmas Eve the
packed crowds try to exceed that
figure. Actually, as for being the
biggest I fear that since 1989 it is
no longer true. In that year the
Basilica of Our Lady was com-
pleted in Yamoussoukro, capital
of Ivory Coast, making it the ba-
silica holding the largest num-
ber of people. It is also the tallest
Roman Catholic Church in the
world, but it may not hold the re-
cord for long. When the Sagrada
Familia in Barcelona is complet-
ed, with its height of 170 metres it
will be the worlds tallest Catho-
lic church.
But lets return to St. Peters
Square where before Christmas
the Papal crib and a magnificent
Christmas tree signify the ap-
proach of the holiday. Sometimes
instead of the stables at Bethle-
hem the Nazareth house of the
Holy Family is erected, so at the
time of writing its not possible to
say what the tens of thousands of
visitors will behold in the square
this year. On the other hand, we
know precisely where the fairy-
tale fir tree has come from. The
choice fell on Sub-Carpathia,
a region formerly belonging to
Hungary but which is now part of
Ukraine, specifically on Bohdan
in the Rakhiv district. A further 43
fir trees were also cut down in the
similarly Hungarian-speaking
Lviv archdiocese to decorate the
Papal apartments and the rooms
of the apostolic palaces. As it hap-
pens, this is not the first time a fir
tree in St. Peters Square has come
from a Hungarian-speaking area.
In 2001 the Papal Christmas
Tree came from Harghita County
in Romania.
The tradition of erecting a Christ-
mas tree in front of St. Peters was
established in 1982 by John Paul
II, who also had the Bethlehem
manger set up in the centre of the
Baroque square. The tree in the
square has to be 30 metres high,
while the other ones are much
smaller. After the festivities the
Vatican donates the trees for chari-
table purposes the wood is used
to make furniture and toys.
This years tall fir tree stood on a
summit that was very difficult to
reach. It was so high only moun-
taineers could get there, the locals
say proudly. Exactly where the
huge fir stood they would not give
away for fear that some madman
may cause damage there. When
it was cut it was removed by heli-
copter and then put on a lorry for
its long journey to the Vatican. In
the week preceding 24 December
the lights will be lit on the already
de corated tree and the Pope will
view it from the window of his
apartment overlooking the square.
On Christmas Eve crowds will
enter St. Peters Basilica, all
bathed in light, to attend Mid-
night Mass. Romans and foreign-
ers, believers and sceptics fill the
nave of the Basilica and wait for
the Pope to announce the news
of Jesuss birth. Outside, theres
another ceremony in the square
where the celebration of mass
at the Church of the Nativity in
Bethlehem is broadcast on a huge
screen. The next day, 25 Decem-
ber, St. Peters Square will again
be the central focus of the Eter-
nal City. At precisely 12 noon the
Pope appears on the central bal-
cony of the Basilica and delivers
his traditional Urbi et orbi bless-
ing to the city of Rome and, per-

Nevertheless, everything recalls

cross! Since then it has been one of Romes most
revered relics. True believers ascend the 28 steps
on their knees to reach the painting inside depict-
ing Jesus, which St. Luke painted with the help of
an angel. Its probably clear that to attempt to de-
scribe the connections between Rome and Cathol-
icism is rather difficult since much more could be
said about even just this single chapel.
Wherever you go in the city you encounter a statue,
a church or a marvellous square which bears wit-
ness to the best artists of the ancient world, or the
periods of Baroque and Renaissance. The trans-
formation of pagan Rome with Christian build-
ings and other creations began with the afore-
mentioned emperor, Constantine the Great, and
his mother Helena. The process was continued by
the Papacy, which made the Catholic Church the
greatest patron of painters, sculptors and archi-
tects. Thanks to this the city is packed full with
the worlds greatest artistic collections. There are
eight museums and five galleries in the Vatican
Palace alone, not to mention its wonderful library,
the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel. In ad-
dition, this is the city where you can spend days
inspecting the works of those two epoch-making
geniuses, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
And theres still been no mention of Peter, whom
Jesus regarded as suitable for fulfilling the high-
est office: Though art Peter and upon this rock I
will build my church, and the gates of Hell shall
not prevail against it. And the Lord gave Peter the
keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. It was in Rome
where Peter died a martyrs death in the year 67.

It is amazing for me to experience it when sniffing a beautifully
designed perfume bottle taken from the shelf of a sophisticated,
elegant perfume shop in Budapests city centre. Christmas scent
is in high demand in the world of luxury perfumes, my daze is
interrupted by Zsolt Zlyomi, the only east European Nose or per-
fumer whose salon Le Parfum Croisette Im visiting. Even I know
what a nose is but who is the Nose?
The Nose is the person with a refined taste who is a creative crafts-
man of the annual 40 billion dollar perfume industry. Perfumer
is the official title. First of all he is born with the aptitude of be-
ing able to smell ten or a hundred times more scents than ordi-
nary people. Then, if he is brazenly lucky and brutally committed,
he gets to enter a closed mysterious circle of 1000-1500 men and
women around the world. We are talking about a craftsmanship,
old and beautiful, which grew out of the pharmaceutical industry
and leather tanning.
A luxury perfume maker creates haute couture fragrances com-
posed for a person, a persons skin, for special events such as wed-
dings and fashion shows, or for a company. International cos-
metics companies employ perfumers as experts and creators of
fragrances for fees that cannot be called modest.
Christmas is the holiday of the perfume industry, says Hun-
garys only Nose. This is the time when large companies realise
40-50 per cent of their annual turnover. Several hectolitres of new
perfumes are launched on the market between November and the
middle of January (dont forget about the Orthodox holidays start-
ing at the beginning of January). With the cold weather people re-
place summers flowery, light scents with heavier, warm, protect-
ing fragrances. Hence many perfumes have summer and winter
versions. Accessories like scented candles bringing a warm Christ-
mas atmosphere to your living room appear at this time of year.
Gift boxes including different sizes of perfumes or a set of perfume,
eau de cologne and body lotion created by the same company also
sell like hot cakes. Its a very sensible present what is not exactly
your partners cup of tea can be passed on to her mother.
What is the finest Christmas scent? I ask my incredibly silly ques-
tion. That, of course, doesnt exist. Whats nice about smell is that
it involves one of the most subjective aspects of life. We have no
idea of how it works and thats what creates the mysticism of the
secret. Mood, nostalgia and feeling. We experience it most inten-
sively around Christmas. The choice is very wide. He takes off the
shelf the worlds most expensive perfume in a gilded bottle, which
in euros is about 2,300. But you can also fill your home with a real
festive scent and mood say for less than one euro if you hang a
tangerine or orange over the radiator, especially if you insert some
cloves. And with those words the by-no-means strict guardian of
perfume winks mischievously.

There are many reasons for paying a visit. Gyr has
one of Hungarys most beautiful Baroque town cen-
tres, an internationally renowned ballet company
and a charming ambience created by its rivers. The
richest town in western Hungary, it is full of stories
and legends some cheerful, some tragic, but all col-
ourful.
Take history the town was often its victim, but in
some cases it was able to influence events. In Otto-
man times, for example, the border fortress of Gyr
had an important role as an advanced defender of
Vienna, the imperial city. Hence the origin of one of
Gyrs emblems, an iron rooster. Having occupied
the town in 1594 the Turks erected the iron bird
on Dunakapu Square as a weather-vane. The Mus-
lim castle commander proudly stated that the town
would fall to the Christians only when the iron roost-
er crowed and the crescent below became a full moon.
Four years later, to assist the valiant Hungarian war-
riors, a brave soldier of the liberating army climbed
up to the iron rooster and remained there under the
cover of night until the sun rose. When dawn broke
he imitated crowing with his trumpet and since the
crescent appeared to be a full moon in the rays of
the rising sun the Turks thought the prediction had
come true and their god had gone over to the Hungar-
ians. They blew up the powder casks in panic, sealing
the fate of the battle.
Szchenyi Square, one of east-central Europes most
attractive Baroque squares, has recently been com-
pletely renovated. Small, cosy cafs have spread and
the Benedictine building complex is situated here. It
contains Hungarys only pharmacy museum which
functions as a chemists. Locals refer to the square as
Main Square, though officially the town doesnt have
one. Surrounded by Baroque mansions, the square
bears the imprint of history. One of Hungarys Ben-
edictine grammar schools stands proudly on its
south side. It faces the Abbots House, constructed as
a residence for the Pannonhalma Benedictine abbot,

but which today houses treasures of the Xantus Jnos
County Museum. Few know that Karl May modelled
his Old Shatterhand on the great explorer, Xantus.
His letter asking for permission is displayed in Dres-
dens Karl May Museum, and a level-action repeat-
ing, so-called Henry rifle engraved John Xantus, the
type Old Shatterhand had in the novels, is exhibited
in Gyr.
Next to the Abbots House stands the beautiful Iron
Stump House with its corner bay windows (Gyr is
full of such windows). It was named after the iron
stump studded with rivets which is fastened to its
corner. In 1833 the building was bought by a grocer,
one Mtys Zittrich, and for a sign-board he used a
tree trunk covered with iron plates in the manner
of Viennas Stock im Eisen. Local legend has it that
itinerant apprentices put nails in the stump to mark
their stay in the town. Their number exceed 7000 at
the time.
It should be mentioned that Gyr is a town of not only
rivers and corner bay windows, but also the arts. The
Iron Stump House, for instance, houses the noted

A Szent Lszl herma a Szent Korona s a Szent
Imre Patk Collection. Patk, a journalist, diplomat
and art collector, was enthused by two trends Euro-
pean and especially Hungarian painting, and the art
of Africa, the Far East, Oceania and the aboriginal
people of Australia. The upper rooms feature paint-
ings by Braque, Chagall, Lucien Herv, Jen Barcsay,
Sndor Bortnyik, Jzsef Egry, Lajos Kassk, Bla Kon-
dor and Jnos Mattis-Teutsch, Ethiopian mud sculp-
tures, a pulpit from Papua-New-Guinea, prayer flags
from Tibet, Australian tree-bark paintings and totem
figures. Its an interesting exhibition compiled with a
broad approach in a Baroque mansion.
The square used to be the location of mass executions.
It was here that the heroine of The White Woman
from Lcse, a novel by the noted 19th-century Hun-
garian writer Mr Jkai, was beheaded. She was ac-
cused of helping Habsburg imperial troops besieging
Lcse to occupy the town during the 18th-century
Rkczi War of Liberation.
Chapter Hill rises above the town centre and is domi-
nated by two buildings, the Bishops Palace, seat of
the Gyr diocese, and the Cathedral, a symbol of the
town. In addition to its Baroque decoration the lat-
ter should not be missed for two reasons. One is the
Hdervry Chapel on its altar is Hungarys most val-
uable medieval goldsmith masterpiece, the reliquary
bust of St Ladislas. The gilded bust holds part of the
chivalrous kings skull. It began to be revered after
an earthquake of 1762 when the congregation turned
to the relic to save Gyr from the tremors. After the
Holy Crown and the Holy Right Hand of King (St) Ste-
phen, the reliquary bust of St Ladislas is Hungarys
third most significant national relic.
The other relic in the Cathedral is a devotional image
of the Weeping Madonna, brought to Gyr by an Irish
bishop fleeing Cromwells persecution of Catholics. A
few decades later the persecution of Irish Catholics
was repeated and on 17 March 1697 the Madonna
shed blood and tears which were wiped up with a
white linen cloth. The blood-stained patch can still

be seen on the cloth which is kept in the Diocesan
Treasury. Thus Gyr Cathedral has become a place of
pilgrimage for the Irish.
Walking from Chapter Hill towards the Rba you
reach Bcsi kapu (Vienna Gate) Square a truly Ba-
roque square lined with houses all with corner bay
windows. In the middle stands a statue of the writer
Kroly Kisfaludy who was born in the vicinity of Gyr.
Kisfaludy is looking down severely, which according
to local legend is not accidental. The town is famous
for its schools and many students hurry through the
square in the morning. Kisfaludy is depicted holding
notepaper and a pen. A few minutes before 8 a.m. he
looks around and jots down the names of latecomers.
What should be noted is that authentic wine spritzer
can only be had in Gyr, since a certain Benedictine
monk and physicist named nyos Jedlik, having ex-
hausted himself with inventing the dynamo and the
electric motor, in high spirits discovered the secret of
making soda water and then spritzer. The good peo-
ple of Gyr were so pleased that they celebrate their
favourite friar with a Spritzer Festival each year. The
7th Festival was held in September, but local spritzer
enthusiasts can certainly be trusted to hold the 8th

and Miskolc, from December Malv is linking
Gyr and Budapest with its scheduled bus shut-
tle service. Tickets for the service can be booked

run by one of the youngest government officials, Erzs-
bet Dobos. Moreover the post is new since the Hungarian

established last January. Horizon asked its president

As our name indicates, we are concerned with the
international economy and international economic
relations. We do that in two ways: on the one hand
we would like to encourage investments by foreign
companies in Hungary and, on the other, we intend
to improve the opportunities for Hungarian small
and medium-sized enterprises to enter foreign
markets and export.
Does that mean that Hungarian and foreign businesspeople
who happen to be travelling on a Malv flight hopefully
in business class and read this article and happen to be
pondering whether to invest in Hungary or open a coffee
house in Vienna could certainly turn to you?
Exactly. With regard to investors, they are
presumably more likely to read this magazine in
business class since we are dealing with the more
significant propositions from abroad. Thus, for
example, we have been continuously conducting
negotiations with large car manufacturers who
have been present in Hungary for years, such as
Opel, Audi, Suzuki and Mercedes, newly investing
in the town of Kecskemt, to increase the proportion
of their Hungarian suppliers.
Who are you negotiating with besides those who are
already known?
Unfortunately I cannot give precise information
about that since it would violate business confidence,
but I can disclose that at present we are working
on 93 different investment projects and their
implementation is at different stages. Some investors
are only expressing interest, but twenty out of the 93
have already made a decision. They include Ameri-
can, Japanese, South Korean and German companies.
What is involved is investment totalling 6.5 billion
euros, which directly promises 25,000 new jobs

What do you attract investors with?
Hungary is a doorway giving access to a market of 250
million stretching for 1000 kilometres. Being a count-
ry in the heart of Europe we represent a naturally
given logistical centre. We can open a door to those
who want to come here and also to those who are
planning to do business further away, whether they
come from east or west. With regard to infrastructure,
perfect transport is provided by motorways, the
railway network and airports, and there are more
than 130 industrial parks ready to meet investors
needs. In addition, the amount of innovative and
still cheap Hungarian labour, highly trained skilled
workers and engineers is an important asset.
And how do you assist Hungarian enterprises to access
the world?
It is not the lack of capital alone that prevents
Hungarian small and medium-size enterprises from
appearing on the international markets.
Does that mean HITA isnt in the business of providing
finance for those concerned?
Thats right, but it does provide the expertise
necessary for success. The trouble is that many
enterprises dont have even basic information. A
survey shows that 73 per cent of small European
companies are quite unaware of what means there
are within the EU for example, what an EU public
procurement is like or how they can participate in
an international fair. This is also true for Hunga-
ry. Therefore we are applying various approaches.
Meeting face-to-face is one example we would like
to reach out to some 3,000 enterprises and we are
recommending attendance at thematic road shows,
searching for individual partners and mentoring
on foreign markets. We provide training, business
exchanges, forums, a business and innovation data
base and technological surveys. We support exporters
who are beginning in this line with training, studies,
preparation for professional events and we run
courses on business and financial planning, marke-
ting and how to conduct negotiations.
You are setting off for Baku almost from here, your
office. Are you bringing or taking business?
Both are possible. I am joining the President of Hun-
gary on his trip to Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and
Azerbaijan. In addition to these countries and our
traditional markets, the agency is also aiming to
discover opportunities in the regions of South-east
Asia and the Middle East.

What makes these restaurants special?
Its rare in itself that three restaurants of this stand-
ard are so close to one another and support eachother
moreover, in such a magnificent street as the Fortu-
na in the Buda Castle. My job involves a lot of travel
across Europe and my experience shows that even in
the major European cities really good restaurants are
not easy to come by, whereas here you have three close
to one another. The Gault Millau and Michelin Guide
ratings and awards that we have been receiving in the
past decade represent the same quality in our restau-
rants as found in London or Paris for the same rating.
Does support eachother mean that the restaurants
have different profiles?
By and large, we give preference to Hungarian cui-
sine in all three of our restaurants, yet the approach
is different. Pierrot, owned by our family since 1982,
represents the most refined cuisine where the fla-
vours of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy come to
life. Restaurant 21, which opened in 2008, has a bistro
style where the specialities of Hungarian fine-civic
gastronomy from the pre-wold war era are reinter-
preted to the 21
st
-century. Pest Buda is what grand-
mas kitchen used to be, where guests are waited on
with friendly attention and home-made dishes are
prepared with the best ingredients and with heart
and soul.
Could you mention some appetizing specialities?
For instance, in 21 we offer goose risotto, which we
have interpreted as a risotto going back to the Italian
influence at the time of King Matthias, and we also
have a light paprika potato dish in a refined 21
st
cen-
tury edition. Pest Buda features a traditional special-
ity, home-made sausage made with Tokaj Asz, and
we also have the time-honoured traditional flamed

Your wine selection is said to be as unique as your cui-
sine.
We are basically focusing on Hungarian wines and
within that on the special Hungarian character, ter-
rior and flavour. Our constantly changing wine lists
only include about 50 wines each, but they have been
selected with great detail and utmost care. Half of the
wineries featured on our winelists are artisanal win-
eries, that handcraft their wines, and they are very
affordable on a European standard. Quite a few of the
wines are limited, small series such as the fantastic
2006 Hrslevel from Jnos Bolyki, or the 2009 white
blend from St.Andrea - which cannot be bought or
tasted anywhere else but with us.
You talk about food and wines quite passionately.
In our family gastronomy is not merely a way of mak-

Malv flights. Offers are assessed
for both business and economy
class by blind tasting with the help
of wine connoisseurs. Hungarian
wine is an important item in the
range of drinks offered in business
class, therefore it is available on all
Malv flights whatever their dura-
tion and the airlines flight attend-
ants are pleased to recommend the
current choice. The noble beverage
is also offered on many flights in

hogy a napnyugati publikum a magyaroktl lta-
lban a gymlcss s knnyed borokat vrja, nem
mindig a tokaji aszkat vagy a villnyi vrsket.

tendernek, furmintja ezttal a turista osztlyon ks-
tolhat, igazi krek mg-tpus bor, s ami a lnyeg:
igazi hungarikum. Olyan csodlatos fehrszlbl
kszlt ez a bor, mely a Krpt-medencn kvl nem

Tokaj winEry
Tokaj Kereskedhz is also a winery that can pro-
duce quality with quantity. Its cellars were com-
pletely transformed in the past few years, the tech-
nological equipment being modernised with major
investment. The development resulted in the com-
pany having the most up-to-date and advanced cel-
lars in the region. The extent of change is well rep-
resented by the 35th Challenge International du Vin
where 30 countries entered with 4600 wines and
Hungary won 30 medals. Among Hungarys eight
golds there were only two wines from the Tokaj
wine region both Tokaj Late Gold Grand Selection
2009 and Tokaj Furmint Barrique 2009 were made
in the Tokaj Kereskedhz winery.
This year wine connoisseurs have selected the
fresh, fruity and less complex Tokaj Furmint 2010
dry white wine to be served on board Malv air-
craft, since Hungarian and foreign wine lovers are
opting for lighter wines. It is not so well-known that
western Europe expects Hungary to produce fruity,
light wines and not only Tokaj Aszu or Villny reds.
Tokaj Kereskedhz has been a successful partici-
pant at the wine tender for years. Its Furmint this
time can be tasted in economy class it is a real May
I have another glass? type of wine and, moreover,
it is uniquely Hungarian. The wine is made from
magnificent white grapes that are non-existent out-
side the Carpathian Basin and it is able to perform
excellently on the international stage. Despite last
years more difficult (cooler and rainier) vintage,
this crispy Furmint brings out the variety well and
has an excellent price/value ratio. It is consumed on
board in promising quantities.

dkre jellemz tradicionlis s vilgfajtk termesztse folyik. Az Egri
Korona Borhz clja, hogy magas minsg boraival s a borturiz-
mushoz kapcsold teljes szolgltatsvertikumval szolglja a kultu-
rlt borfogyasztsra vgykat. Az Egri Korona Borhz s Borfalu ama
pincszetek kz tartozik, amelyek kpesek a minsget a mennyisg-

az ilyen tpus vrsket keresi, ami kicsit reakci az elz vrsbor-pa-
radigma mly, barrikolt, csersavas, fekete, lekvros stlusra.
EgEr crown winEry
Eger Crown Winery is one of the major wine produ-
cers in the Eger wine region. The winerys production
is based on vineyards covering 670 acres where grapes
include international varieties and those traditionally
characteristic of the region. Eger Crown Winery aims
to serve those desiring sophisticated wine consump-
tion with its high quality wines and diverse services
connected to wine tourism.
Eger Crown Winery and Wine Village is among those
wine producers able to match quality with quantity.
Hungary has not many wineries of such a high standard
and size. Besides finely and professionally made charac-
teristic Eger wines, Eger Crown Winery provides comp-
rehensive services for thirsty travellers in relation to
wine tourism, gastronomy and wellness.
No wonder that such cellars able to produce high qual-
ity wines in significant volume triumph at the Malv
wine tender! The wines must respond to changes in in-
ternational trends and the nature of flying, while also
being available in sufficient quantity. However fine and
unique a small winerys craft wine with a high content of
alcohol produced in a couple of thousand bottles may be,
it is not suitable for the function of wine served on board
a function that is more than just quenching thirst.
Eger Crown Winery has been on board since 2005 when
it first won at a Malv wine tender. For the first time this
year its wines have been selected for business class as well
as economy, since Crowns wines are light yet complex.
They well represent the magnificent Eger wine region,
Hungarys Burgundy. They are made with a low yield (6-9
tonnes/hectare) so they are fruity, with complex levels.
Crown Winery can make wine from Hungarian and
international grape varieties which provide a pleasing
image of Hungary for both domestic and foreign passen-
gers, as it is very important that a national airline has sat-
isfying wines on board. The passenger knowing little or
nothing about Hungary and encountering the country
for the first time in a glass of wine will think well of the
country if it is of high-quality.
This year economy class passengers can taste Eger Red
Harmony 2009, a splendid cuve with a good quality/
price ratio, while businesspeople can sample the fruity
Eger Blue Frankish 2008 and Eger Cabernet Sauvignon
2009 with its complex layers. Crown Winerys wines well
represent a characteristic feature of Eger, whereby wines
produced in the region have excellent tannins, are al-
ways fruity and often have a high value of minerals, thus
representing the essence of good wine. Furthermore,
they match the leading international trends. These are
the reds that are popular in the world today somewhat
a reaction to the previously fashionable wines with their
deep, barrique, dark, full-bodied and tannined features.

Nyakas Winery is a bastion of the current trend. For
a long time its excellent cellars in the Etyek wine
region have been noted for their scented and crispy
whites of international standard. The cellars are run
by the father of Hungarian reductive wine making,
Ern Maya, Wine Producer of the Year in 2002. (At
the aforementioned French wine competition where
Tokaj Kereskedhz was triumphant, Nyakas Winery
also won a gold medal for its Buda Riesling 2009.) The
Etyek region with its lime soil and cool breezes is just
right for the white wines of this style, which is in de-
mand on the part of travellers soaring high in the sky.
The point is not only that it is a general, mostly Euro-
pean trend to give preference to pleasant and fruity
beverages as opposed to full-bodied wines; it is also
a fact that flying itself favours light wines. The effect
of full-bodied wines with a very high alcohol content
is not desirable because the effects of a strong wine

may increase by the time a thirsty passenger lands,
and that is not the aim. The intention is to provide
an experience of lovely scents, aroma and lightness
in wines. A red with complex levels is, of course, a
fine wine but it is better complementing a substantial
meal, exclusive occasions and holidays, or as a gift,
and not when you dont want to either think or work
but just casually take flight. Naturally, a wine being
on board an aircraft involves a specific medium of
promotion which not only spreads the reputation of
the winery across the world but also that of the coun-
try. The Buda Sauvignon blanc 2009 of the Nyakas
Winery is sure to do well for Hungarys reputation.

sponge from the ingredients in the usual way watch out not to
make it too dry while baking, because it will break more easily.

the joint malv and Hungarian baptist Aid charity project, the Shoe box Flight, is taking off again
a few days before christmas heading for trgu mure in Romania. In the now regularly organised
campaign transylvanian children arrive at liszt Ferenc International Airport to take shoe boxes
filled with gifts collected by Hungarian baptist Aid and the Hungarian national carrier on board a

which will help many children in need to have a more intimate, merrier christmas.

departure. Its also good news for business travellers that the
opening of the additional security checkpoints has enabled
those in transit to use the airports priority lane.
developments are not over, since following the completion of
Skycourt refurbishment of the two old wings, 2A and 2b, is
currently underway at full speed. the final result can already be
predicted for next spring, when the entirely integrated terminal
2 will offer convenience and an atmosphere on a level which at
the moment is only provided by the central hall, Skycourt.

Today only middle-aged citizens of Budapest remem-
ber what the letters KN signify, namely kalauz nlkli
(without a conductor). They adorned vehicles whose
conductors had been removed by the municipal trans-
port authority. The cog-wheel railway was the first to
become KN exactly 50 years
ago, on 4 December 1961.
Later, on 1 July 1969, the uni-
formed conductors with their
uniform bags were removed
from all means of transport.
Until then conductors tra-
velled on their designated
vehicles throughout the day
and from their hallowed bags
sold childrens and adults
tickets which they cancelled
with a pre-set ticket-punch.
In winter they wore special
gloves which left the tips
of their fingers free so they
could deftly get the tickets
from the depth of the bag
and duly punch them.
They were the whistling con-
ductors they alighted at the
stops, supervised those get-
ting on and, blowing their
whistles, signalled to the
driver a start could be made.
Each carriage had its own
conductor, three on a tram
with three carriages. Then
going sideways and pulling
in their bellies they tried to
plough through the crowd.
As a sign of progress their
whistles were taken away
and they had to pull a hanging leather strap which
sounded a bell signalling departure.
Sometime in the early 1960s the standing, roving
conductor was superseded by the sitting version, pri-
marily on buses. The seat nearest the rear platform
was transformed into the conductors work station.
With this they no longer pulled a strap but pushed a
button to get the bus going. It was already the Atomic
Age and then came the conductorless vehicles.
According to the locals inclined anyway to a bit of
dodging KN also meant its easier (Knnyebb) to
travel without (Nlkl) a ticket. Eventually conduc-
tors were completely done away with and then came
the era of the ticket inspectors.
