Since we first saw a Malv aeroplane
flying over the Danube in Budapest to
mark the celebration of the foundation
of the Hungarian state on 20 August, the
whole month has certainly become one
of our favourite periods. Observing the
ingenious aerobatic manoeuvre with
the citys imposing panorama in the
background has become for us a must.
Moreover, this is the day when Budapest is
at its best: festivals, shows, fairs, concerts,
the Red Bull Air Race and the fireworks
display in the evening. No wonder that
Hungarys capital is full to the brim on
20 August.
Yet even beforehand, to our greatest
satisfaction, holidays take the leading
role, since these few weeks represent the
airlines busiest period. Consequently,
Malvs employees take their holidays at
the airport and on board the aircraft. At
this time everyone is needed to smoothly
facilitate the peak period all the more so,
since your vacation as a passenger begins
with the flight. Thus it is important that
Malv aircraft depart and arrive on time,
as you are accustomed to, and that an

We wish our holiday-making customers

although this year the special atmosphere of sziget
can be enjoyed for only six days instead of seven, there
is a lot to choose from on the festivals minus one
and zero days. the warm-up begins on 11 august, the
day of Hungarian song, with a one-off mega concert
featuring seven hours of the iconic hits of beat, pop,
and rock from the last five decades. day zero sees
Iron maiden arriving, as part of an inter-continental
world tour. needless to say, the official week of events
is not lacking in top performers this years stars in-
clude the kooks, jamiroquai, sex Pistols, R.e.m and
the killers. serj tankian, who fronts one of the worlds
most celebrated rock bands, the eclectic system of
a down, as well as the Canadian-american alanis
morissette, who has Hungarian roots on her mothers
side, are performing at the festival. the most inspir-
ing intercontinental superstars of the 21

Babyshambles, are also there and will be competing
for the audiences favours with the likes of super-throat

to Hungary for the fifth time, though he has never previ-
ously given a concert in a provincial town. Being desig-
nated european Capital of Culture 2010 has resulted
in upgrading development for Pcs, which is already
a centre of culture. domingo, the general director of
the Washington national opera and the los angeles
opera, is giving a concert which promises to be unfor-
gettable, where ever-green melodies and the most well-
known opera arias can be heard. the Pannon Philhar-
monic orchestra is being conducted by eugen khon.

as always, there will be no shortage of farewell to
the summer events this year at the millenris, where
the International Puppet and street theatre festival
is being held for the third time. this year, on the oc-
casion of the Year of Renaissance, talks and events
echoing the spirit of the 15

been included in the festivals programme, but there

traditional puppet and street theatre forms, promise

from the beginning of august authentic Buddha relics as well as the several thou-
sand year old sacred relics of enlightened Buddhist masters are on display in
Budapest. there is no scientific explanation for the materialised phenomenon ex-
hibited at the missionary love expo in the sYma Hall, namely tiny pearls found in
the ashes of Buddha and Buddhist masters. Buddhists believe they are crystalli-
sations of the masters love, goodness and purified consciousness. the travelling
exhibition has visited numerous countries including Hungary two years ago, when
11,000 people stood in long queues to see the miracle for themselves.

for the 9

occasion one of the most popular and perhaps most attractive
open-air theatre festivals in the vicinity of lake Balaton is opening its gates this
summer in the park of keszthelys festetics mansion. this year the keszthely
summer theatre festival is presenting shakespeares merchant of venice
with Pter Haumann in the title role under the direction of tams Pusks, who
was instrumental in establishing the festival almost ten years ago. according
to Pusks, the story of the merchant of venice has never been so much in
need as today, when outpourings of hatred and violence have become so
much part of Hungarys public life. the performance aims to make it obvious
for everyone that there is no other weapon against contempt-riddled violence
than humour, music and love.

on the feast day of king (saint)
stephen, founder of the Hungar-

has come forward with patents which may change the concept of a
solarium. Besides production, a remarkably successful Hungarian
franchise with a worldwide network has also been established. Who
would have thought that a solarium could be not only for tanning but
also for whitening?

In addition to ten days of music, theatre and literature,
the events known as the festival of palaces, castles and
tokaj wine also feature products of zempln countys
miracle of nature wine tasting and gastronomic feasts.
this summer the opening concert in the courtyard of
srospataks Rkczi Castle includes Bartks dance
suite, liszts Piano Concerto no. 2 and symphony no.
1 by Brahms. the speciality of the closing concert will be
the liszt ferenc Chamber orchestra with concert mas-
ter jnos Rolla, who established the zempln festival.
the orchestra will accompany opera singer andrea Rost
in the srospatak Calvinist church. Besides the Year of
Renaissance, the festival is also celebrating the 150

Csng festival in the town of
jszberny will welcome all who are curious to know more
about the culture of Csng Hungarians from moldova, the
gyimes and Htfalus regions. the five-day festival features
folklore shows, dance teaching, a folk mass, a craft fair and
plenty of concerts. Performers include Parno graszt, the
Csk band and the jszsg folk ensemble, and although
the festival primarily intends to reflect the culture of Hun-
garians living as minorities outside Hungary, the colourful
cultural heritage of other peoples in europe will not be ne-
glected. Performers from france, Cyprus, turkey, Italy and
greece also feature in this years programme.

the new orleans swing festival, organised now for the
fourth time by the Palace of arts, has evolved into one of
the most important classical jazz events of Central europe,
thanks to its prominent american and european performers.
on 29 august the Hot jazz Band opens the events and will
be smuggling some songs in Hungarian into their programme
alongside american evergreens. their guest soloists include
young vocalist va Bolba and one of Hungarys finest imita-
tors of louis armstrongs style, Papa fleigh (lszl forgcs),
who is also adding colourful elements to the production.
on the 30

leroy jones takes the stage. one of the best
representatives of authentic louisiana style, jones has per-
formed with stars like danny Barker, Harry Connick jr. and
the Preservation Hall jazz Band. on the third day (31 august)
Hungarys veteran ensemble of ragtime, dixieland and swing,
the Benk dixieland Band, will perform a medley american
music from the 20s, 30s and 40s, decades regarded by many
as the golden age of jazz.

the title of the exhibition refers to the brief yet all the
more exciting period of the middle of the first millennium
B.C. when in Pharaonic egypt a new (and final) golden
age was experienced, following some 400 years of eco-
nomic and political hardship after the end of the new
kingdom. the exhibition focuses on this last golden age
of the pharaohs egypt, while simultaneously providing
an exciting overview of a culture which never failed
to preserve its traditions throughout the 3000 years
of its history. material for the exhibition has come to
Budapest from the British museum and the louvre,
as well as from museum collections in Berlin, vienna,
florence, Rome, trieste, Palermo, munich and zagreb.

Blood, sweat & tears are more than classic they are
an outstanding legend of rock history. Yet founding
member al kooper, who played keyboards, intended
the band only as a spring board. His idea was to bring
together a few jazz and rock musicians for the sake of a
few gigs to make enough to move from new York to lon-
don. after the first Bs&t recording, he actually left the
band. However, the majority of the musicians stayed to-
gether and cut a new album with singer david Clayton-
thomas and trumpeter lew soloff heading horns. the
simply self-titled album Blood, sweat & tears topped
the american charts for seven years, selling two million
within a year and winning the album of the Year at the
grammy awards. Hungarian audiences can at last en-
joy those, by now world hits live at the concert.

leonardo last year and the aba-novK retro-

realism with a series of 3+1 exhibitions last-
ing several months. the aim, involving a previ-
oUsly Unexplored theme, is to identify where
socialist realism of past times can be placed
in the history of art.

retro socialist panorama
Influenced by fashion retro, the general public regards
the exhibitions as a visual joke. Avant-garde fans inter-
pret them as anti-art, turning back the wheel of history,
while relentless anti-communists consider the series to
be empty political propaganda. The first show opened
on 10 July and is trying to clean' Stalinist art, which
turned everything upside down in 1950s Hungary, of
the dust that had collected during all the forgetting
years of the Kdr era. Socialist realism can now shine
in all its splendour on MODEMs walls and the proudly
strutting Stalin portraits, Rkosis shaking hands with
workers, employees with a broad smile, happy farmers
and rambling young pioneers stiffened into a poster like
idyll are ready for the judgement of posterity.
The second exhibition in this glut of socialist realism
is entitled Ordinary Communism and features sev-
eral hundred photographs, posters, writings and music
reflecting everyday life in Hungary between 1949 and
1956. The SocArt exhibition opening on 14 August intro-
duces visitors to 1970s Soviet-Russian art, which with
sharp irony and much humour fused artistic life with
pop art.
According to Yevgeny Popovs lively description, the
Party was struggling with all its strength in the great
Soviet Union under conditions of the ever intensifying

the 350 rooms of the Muse Carnavalet, the
museum of the citys history, you experience
the past of Paris come alive, such that later
under the magnificent Renaissance arcades of
the Place des Vosges you feel as if you were in

Yet, the sight of homeless people stretched
out in front of the art galleries throws you
immediately back to the present. They are like
models of their embankment fellow sufferers,

If you are attracted to this provincial-like Paris, it is worthwhile
ascending on foot to the Sacr Coeur, ambling by the shabby and
seedy sex shops in Place Pigalle and Boulevard Clichy. Life is
constant day and night on Place du Tertre, a square full of tables
with checked tablecloths, kitsch painters on the look out for tourists
and junk sellers. Aspiring Piafs hold out their hats, miming to the
sound of a street organ, while accordion melodies waft from the
panorama terraces overlooking the Parisian roofs.
Paris tuned to merry-making presents an especially magic spectacle
at the start of summer, on the Day of Music (21 June) and the noted
Quatorze Juillet. On 14 July, the anniversary of the French Revolution,
a colourful military parade fills the Champs Elyses. In the evening
the lights of the fireworks mingle with the lanterns of festive street
balls.
Emerging from the underground at Dfense the futuristic district
of Manhattan on the Seine appears. This gigantic business quarter
of the city of lights was shaped in the ambitious modernising fever
of the Mitterrand era. The Neuilly and Bercy districts have also
undergone changes of a similar scale.
The French capital, formed from the ensemble of a hundred villages
in bygone days, attained the rank of the city of lights at the time of
a certain Baron Georges Haussmann. The wide avenues and road
network were shaped in the 1850s. The wealth of the belle poque
radiates from the building of the Garnier Opera on Boulevard
Haussmann, which is lined by large department stores (Lafayette,
Printemps and Monoprix). Place Vendme, majestic in its coldness
with its famous column, the Hotel Ritz and the worlds most
expensive jewellers, is crossed by a regal thoroughfare, the Rue
Royale. The gilded iron fence of the Tuileries Gardens can be seen
from afar. At one end the historic heart of Paris is beating among
the walls of the Louvre functioning as a museum since 1793. The
Louvre, the citys largest ensemble of buildings has been a fortress,
prison, royal palace, treasury, armoury and academy throughout
the whirlpool of history. The much disputed glass Pyramid, where
an escalator leads to arguably the worlds oldest and richest museum,
shines like a real jewel in the evening illumination.
Place des Invalides, included in the official sightseeing tours, is
visited for Napoleons tomb. Yet not far away by the bank of the Seine
you can discover the unique impressionist collection of the Muse
d'Orsay. In this former railway station huge, bright spaces serve as
scenery for the world of Monet, Manet, Czanne, Renoir and others.
A few streets away you can experience a rare intellectual treat in the
idyllic tranquility of the Rodin Museum. Seeing The Thinker and
The Burghers of Calais standing in the garden you can muse over the

The office market in Hungary mainly refers to the
capital, since 95 per cent of quality office buildings are
located here. The size of commercial office space in
Budapest reached 2 million square metres last
year which, although sounding much, is still little
compared to a large European city (for instance, 3-4
times as many offices operate in Vienna, in neighbouring
Austria). Although 12-15 per cent more office buildings
have been constructed in recent years, there are still
large reserves in the system. If there is the demand,
construction could commence on a further half million
square metres within the next six months.
The Budapest market is still considered reasonable
the cost of an office with identical facilities is double
in Bucharest and three times more in Moscow. In
particular, investors from Asia, who do not like taking
too large a risk, prefer buying in this region.
Contrary to what many believe, offices are not built
simply for the construction companies to collect the
rental after a well-done job. Rented-out buildings
represent commodities with excellent revenue and are
highly in demand, mostly on the part of investment
funds with a high degree of liquidity. Construction
has often just begun when a buyer appears on the
scene.
In addition to an investor, a good tenant is the
other main character in the story it is he who is
able to improve the image formed about an office
building. A prominent tenant of good reputation the
anchor tenant attracts others, partly his own bu-
siness partners and partly those who think that the
proximity of a highly reputable company casts a good
light on themselves.
New office buildings have pillar frames and enormous
glass surfaces. The large glass walls represent
efficiency, since due to natural lighting employees
can work more effectively. A common characteristic
feature is that they are nearly all Category A. This
means they are built not only at a high technical
level but are also at favourable locations in terms of
transport. In Budapest such locations include Vci
Road and its immediate vicinity where two-thirds
of offices are situated the Danube bank with the
popular Roosevelt Square or the Bank Center.

station. It is here that, after the
appearance of an international
bank and a multinational mobile

by the relocation of another bank.
ORCO is continuing development
of the majestic building of the
Parisien Department Store, which
opened in 1910 on Andrssy
Avenue. The avenue is now a
part of World Heritage and as the
building is a listed monument
it stands in contrast to the glass
palaces. ORCO is restoring the
building to its original splendour
and preserving its original
function, while offering luxury
offices on the top five storeys to
real office connoisseurs. Opening
is scheduled under the name of
PDS in the first quarter of 2009.
Companies operating large fleets
are increasingly taking to locations
on the edge of the city which
have good transport links, say in
Budars or near the M0 ringroad,
since for them parking facilities
and smooth transportation are
vital. As for offices in Buda, it is
no surprise that they have been
increasing in value. It certainly
matters whether the manager of
a company, who is likely to live
in Buda, has to struggle across a
bridge in the morning rush hour
or simply roll down a hill to an
office near his or her residence.
Beside location, technical para-
meters are also increasingly
gaining in importance. The
range is wide and includes broad
band internet connection, air
conditioning, security entry and
guarded car parks.
The operation of companies has
basically changed in recent years,
says Szabolcs Brck, marketing
and sales manager of Biggeorges-
NV. Organisations have become
flatter, classic middle management
has disappeared and project-based
work is on the increase. Due to that,
demand is moving from the cell
towards open-space offices, and
international trends also reflect
this. At least 70 per cent of tenants
are looking for open-space offices,
the small separate office system is
beginning to disappear.
That, lets face it, is bad news for
most of us. After all, it is more
comfortable if we can arrange our
own little business in our own
little den. However, time is slowly
passing this by. Nevertheless, in
the city centre there are some
old buildings converted into
office centres which, due to being
protected, can only be altered in
a limited way. While one person
requires some 15 square metres
of space in such an old building,
this figure is around 10-12 in a
reputable Scandinavian company
office. And should someones good
fortune lead to working for a cost-
effective large American company,
he or she is lucky to get eight
square metres!

Put your shoes on and come for a walk with me! It doesnt matter if
they are a bit worn as long as they are comfortable, since it will be a
lengthy walk. Were going on a stroll by the Danube in the centre of
Budapest. Lets meet at the Chain Bridge, say after lunch.
While waiting for the others, we can look around Roosevelt Square
at the Pest end of the bridge. Theres the Gresham Palace, today one
of the citys most lavish hotels, a member of the Four Seasons chain.
Back in 1907 the Gresham insurance company commissioned the
building for reasons of prestige, since there were rumours it was go-
ing bankrupt and so the company had a palace surpassing all im-
agination constructed at one of the busiest locations of the capital, in
the process convincing clients that business was as usual. The dec-
ades went by, the palace was increasingly neglected and in the end
only the enthusiastic or curious dared to venture inside to view the
splendour under its arcades, which was enthralling even amidst its
ruins. Today the Gresham is a five-star luxury hotel with a superb
view, although curious enthusiasts no longer call in.
The Academy of Sciences is the other jewel in the square. By the
time the Gresham was built at the beginning of the 20
th
century the
Academy had already weathered a few storms, since contemporary
public opinion wasnt too taken with the building and its neo-Ren-
aissance style.
So, when everyone has arrived lets walk across the Chain Bridge.
Its the citys oldest bridge and thus it sometimes copes with 21
st
-cen-
tury traffic only with some difficulty, but in 1849 when the bridge
was inaugurated its two lanes per-
fectly satisfied the budding needs of
a developing metropolis. The pride
of the Chain Bridge is represented
by its four lions, which generated
a long and heated discussion about
whether they had tongues, and if
not whether that was in order. How-
ever, tongues or no tongues, the
bridge spans the river proudly and
majestically, and it withstands the
strain of motor vehicles surpris-
ingly well something no one could
have dreamt of when the bridge was
constructed. Theres a tunnel at the
end of the bridge. Many Hungarian
children have grown up convinced
that the bridge is pushed in there
for the night!
Weve reached the Buda side, so lets
turn right here, go down the steps
and along the bank of the river un-
der the chestnut trees. This is one
of the most beautiful walks in Bu-
dapest, since the foliage makes the
promenade cool in the heat and ro-
mantic in the evening. You wont
have brought your sweetheart in
vain! Well head straight towards
Margaret Bridge, but just keep clear
of the bicycle lane, otherwise inces-
sant ringing behind your back will
be the response.
If youve no fear of heights, lets sit
for a while on the stone wall and
admire the river and the pleasure
boats, passing by in constant suc-
cession in summer, and, of course,
the Parliament, which in its time
was the largest building in Hun-
gary. It may no longer be the big-
gest, but for us Hungarians its still
the nicest, though it is rare to find
days when it has no scaffolding any-
where time has got the better of
the soft limestone from Sskt, so it
is slowly being replaced by a harder
variety from Stt. The construc-
tion of Parliament required a huge
investment. The original estimate
involved 18.5 million gold crowns,
but in the end the cost was double.
Following the groundbreaking in
1885, 176,000 cubic metres of earth
were moved, 40 million bricks were
put in place and more than half a
million stones were carved to make
the building captivating. As the gi-
gantic work progressed they tried

From Margaret Bridge theres a
real picture-postcard scene, par-
ticularly if you stop in the middle
and look back to the city. Parlia-
ment is to the left, Castle Hill to
the right, while the bridges, the
Danube and the winding city are
in between. No wonder that Buda-
pests Danube bank became part
of the World Heritage more than
20 years ago! It is an unparalleled
spectacle, one you can never tire
of. It makes you quite appreciative
of this sometimes crazy place.
On the other side of the bridge
there is Margaret Island, which
in the heat is also tempting with
its fountains and shaded alleys.
There is virtually no traffic in this
huge park a bus runs only now
and then, though naturally there
are many people on scooters and
bicycles, not to mention tricycles
and even quadricycles. In order to
be able to complete this walk along
the Danube bank, its perhaps ad-
visable to spare your energy and
resist the islands temptations at
least you can always come back
the following day.
At the end of Margaret Bridge,
back in Pest, lets turn right where
you can again see the promenade
with chestnut trees where we
were strolling, only this time
from the other side of the river. It
will also be a pleasant experience,
at least once youve managed to
struggle across the moving line of
cars and step over the railing, after
which you can go down to the bot-
tom of the steps where it is lovely
just to sit around, talk or simply
watch the water, inhale the real
Danube scent and bask in the
sun. The River Danube is alleged-
ly the worlds most international
river. It flows through ten coun-
tries, which is a nice performance
for such an ancient waterway. Of
its 2850 kilometres we Hungar-
ians can only lay claim to 417 on
the left bank not even that many
but we are still grateful for it.
At Parliament its a good idea to
leave the bank even if you dont
feel like it, but only for as long as
it takes to view the building from
the other side. You used to be able
to approach it quite closely, to go
up the steps so that in the end only
a door would separate you from
seeing how the matters of the
country were decided. But times
have changed and the demands of
security prevail here, too. The not-
so-long-ago still friendly doors can
now be admired only at a respect-
ful distance. Nevertheless, if time
allows you can inspect the interior
of Parliament in a group and with
a guide. Some years ago even Tony
Blair expressed wonder at all the
beauty, although, due to his office,
he had already seen quite a few

Perhaps your feet are beginning to feel like lead but dont
give up, were not far from our starting point. Continuing
along the riverside there may be a couple of vacant benches
not yet occupied by embracing lovers or weary dog walkers.
What we can find is a row of bronze shoes at the edge of the
embankment, placed here in memory of those who were
shot into the river during World War II and who left nothing
behind but pairs of worn shoes.
We are slowly approaching the Academy of Sciences and its
familiar neighbourhood. If you have any strength left, lets
walk through the small subway under the Chain Bridge to
The Corso, the popular promenade on the other side. Here is
everyones favourite statue, a small image of a child. It took
some time for people to realise it was a girl, and not just any
girl but a princess. Well we already liked it as a boy. Today
tourists love standing by the statue for a quick snapshot. Our
royal princess has become a real photogenic friend.
Weve come a long way and we deserve a bit of rest, perhaps
on a terrace of one of the hotels where we can sip a large, scin-
tillating, cold beer. Should you desire something more eco-
nomical, you can simply sit on a bench and there you have
Castle Hill all before you in its splendour. The entire view is
absolutely beautiful! Allow me also to settle down. Its good
to stretch my legs a bit and loosen my laces. I enjoyed the

is the feast day of King (Saint) Stephen, the
founder of the Hungarian state, as well as the day of new
bread. The day is celebrated each year with a number of
large-scale events, including a festival of Hungarian crafts,
a water and air parade, as well as a massive fireworks
display in the evening. Horizon asked attractive govern-
ment spokesperson Bernadett Budai about the details.
The 20th of August is traditionally an all-day public
celebration in Hungary. The foundation of the state is
commemorated in all the 3200 towns and villages of
Hungary; of course, the central celebrations are held
in Budapest. As early as 8 a.m. residents and visitors
are expected at Kossuth Square in front of Parliament,
where the ceremonial flag of the Hungarian Republic is
being hoisted in the presence of the Infantry Guard of
Honour and the Hungarian Army Military Band, with
historic banners flying. At 10 a.m. there is a passing
out parade of new officers at one of the most beautiful
and symbolic locations of Hungarys thousand-year
statehood, Heroes Square. Before that Andrssy Av-
enue will witness a procession of military bands and
majorettes. Following the inauguration of new officers,
aircraft and helicopters of the Hungarian forces will fly
in formation over the square. In the afternoon in Vajda-
hunyad Castle, near the square, the Festival of Bread,
which provides an insight in old, village traditions, is
being held with the co-operation of the Hungarian Bak-
ers Royal Order. Meanwhile at Kossuth Square there
will be a parade involving period costumes, horses and
flags, amidst tents and sets recalling Saint Stephens
time. Children can take part in craft sessions and mili-
tary trials, and observe a display of the blacksmiths
trade. In the evening, as every year, a 20-minute fireworks display will
hopefully make this public holiday unforgettable. Besides the usual
spectacle, elements which have never been seen in Hungary before,
including a laser show, will enrich the event.

Where is the government spokesperson going to be during this day?
Unfortunately not at any of these locations. A government operations
team has been established, since in 2006 there was a devastating rain-
storm which disrupted the proceedings. Its members are monitoring
the security of the state celebrations. The team comprises representa-
tives of several organisations, including the meteorological service,
the national police, the public transport authorityy and the fire bri-
gade. Naturally, the government spokesperson will also be present,
so that if there is an emergency situation someone will be immedi-
ately able to inform the media. Hence I can watch the fireworks only
through the window.
May I ask how a young, 29-year-old attractive woman becomes a govern-
ment spokesperson?
Ive always been drawn to Hungarian literature and history, so much
so that I left the Austrian secondary school where I was a pupil be-
cause there we unfortunately hardly learnt about such matters. I was
about ten at the time of the political changes and at home my parents
infected me with an interest in public life. Watching the news we reg-
ularly discussed the days events and there was so much to discuss!
Thus at the time of university entrance I was very pleased to see there
was a degree course in political analysis. When I graduated I enrolled
in a PhD course at the Corvinus University of Economics, while I was
already working for Vision Consulting where I made weekly political
analyses. Due to that I once appeared in a morning TV programme
where they happened to be talking about the government spokesper-
son who had just resigned. In the middle of the discussion the pre-
senter just looked into the camera and said: Prime Minister, there is a
government spokesperson here who fits the bill in every respect
Bernadett Budai is well-known to the public from television. What are
you doing when you are not on TV?
Most likely Im preparing to be in front of the cameras. After all, theres
a spokespersons press conference nearly every day and the themes
can be quite varied, so I have to get thoroughly prepared to be able to
answer all the sometimes rather detailed questions.
Although not part of the series of state celebrations on the 20
th
, nev-
ertheless the five-day Festival of Crafts in Buda Castle is one of the
most popular events. Visitors can turn their hand to try wood carving,
bulrush weaving, blacksmithing, pottery, musical instrument mak-
ing, weaving, embroidery, felt crafts, basket weaving or honey bread
making, and if they become peckish with all this they can sample
Hungarys regional specialities, not to mention the culture of those
regions. In another busy area of the capital, in the City Park, the Fes-
tival of Bread offers a display and tasting held by the Royal Order of
Hungarian Bakers. By the Danube Bank there will be an air parade,
more precisely the Red Bull Air Race, increasingly known as the avia-
tion Formula 1 speed and obstacle flying contest .
Incidentally, Formula 1 the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix 2008
is being held at Hungaroring between 31 July and 3 August this year.
The speed circus is coming from Hockenheim and afterwards will be
heading for Valencia. The Hungarian round is surely something not
to be missed.

Our series introducing Malvs renewed onboard wine
selection is coming to an end. (Our friendly flight-at-
tendants will soon be offering different wines.) The
selection of wines is important because a passenger
stepping on board a Malv flight is already arriving
in Hungary and learning about the country via our
drinks on offer. As the Hungarian national carrier, we
represent a shop window of the country, so it is under-
standable that we ascribe a significant role to the intro-
duction of Hungarian wines. To close this current series
in Horizon we introduce below the excellent products of
the Eger wine region to the north-east of Budapest and
those of the Neszmly wine region to the north-west of
the Hungarian capital.

The nearly 6040-hectare vineyards of the Eger wine
region are located on the southern slopes of the
Bkk Hills. The centre of the wine region is Eger it-
self. This more than a thousand year old small town
with its glorious historic past, valuable listed build-

most famous places. Eger is usually referred to as a
historical town, yet it is also considered a centre of
Baroque, wine, medicinal and thermal waters, and of
students. It was already an episcopal see during the
reign of King (Saint) Stephen, Hungarys first mon-
arch. The storms of history did not spare the town. It
was almost ruined during the Mongol invasion, but
the castle built of stone in the 12t

century also later
played a very important defensive role in 1552 dur-
ing the siege by the Ottoman army. Captain of the
castle, Istvn Dob and his handful of 2000 defend-
ers stood against Turkish forces 40 times superior for
more than a month.
Nearly 170 outstanding architectural monuments
of the past centuries have survived in almost intact
beauty: the castle and fortress system, which now
includes the Castle Museum, the casemates incorpo-
rating a lapidarium, the Gothic palace, the Lyceum
school building, the Specula Obscura observatory,
the periscope, the Archbishops Palace, the Turkish
Bath, the County Hall with its wrought iron gates
made by Henrik Fazola, the Prison, the Cathedral,
the Baroque Cistercian, Minorite and Franciscan
churches, the Minaret, the Telekessy Istvn Pharma-
cy Museum displaying Haban ceramic utensils and
the Gza Grdonyi Memorial Museum housed in the
writers former dwelling.
The town and its environs constitute a noted historic
wine region. The population has been engaged in vin-
iculture for almost a thousand years, producing such

bortermelssel, olyan kivl borokat termelve, mint

cultural giant enterprise, several hundred medium
and small-scale wineries have been established and
have developed spectacularly, thus the quality of
wines from the region has significantly improved.
The oldest wine cellars are more than 400 years old,
but new cellars are still being hollowed out.
The Eger Korona Winery has gone on board Malv
aircraft with its Selection Bulls Blood of Eger, 2003.
The winery is located 14 kilometres from Eger along
the road leading to the thermal springs of Egerszalk.
The viticultural enterprise with its virtually unique
technology in Hungary not only produces high quali-
ty wines but, like many French chteaux and Austral-
ian wineries, also organises wine tasting and first-
rate professional functions. In addition, it engages in
the promotion of wine tourism.
The winery opened in 2003 and at present manages
267 hectares of vineyards. The wines, which are suit-
able for longer maturity due to their quality, are ma-
tured in 1,200 barrique barrels it is acknowledged
that the cooper is half responsible for the quality of
wine the other half rests with the wine-maker.
The Hilltop Neszmly Winery (Wine Hotel and Restau-
rant) is represented on board Malv aircraft by three

Initially the enterprise, which
was founded in 1991, was ex-
clusively engaged in exporting
wines. Success came quickly.
Their refreshing fruity wines
were received highly favour-
ably in the gradually expand-
ing British market and soon
the company became the larg-
est Hungarian producer of
bottled wines exported to Brit-
ain. Six million bottles bearing
the Hilltop Neszmly brand
name are annually purchased
by the British. In addition to
exports, they are dynamically
increasing their share of the
Hungarian market. Nearly
800,000 bottles were sold in
Hungary in 2006.
In every case top quality, selected and ripe grapes full
of flavour and components are used for the wines.
The grapes mostly come from their own vineyards
and to a lesser extent are bought from more than a
thousand vineyards in other historic wine regions
of Hungary and transported with utmost care to the
Neszmly and Csszr wineries.
The vineyards, located on the particularly beautiful
slopes of the szr-Neszmly historic wine region,
mostly overlook the Danube. This part of Hungary has
been famous for its grapes and wines for more than
two thousand years, ever since Roman times. The an-
nual 2,500 hours of sunshine, the slightly warm soil
composed of loess, the configurations of the terrain
and the micro-climate ensured by the Danube all fa-
vour the quality of the grapes.
The buildings comprising an underground grapes
receiving unit, a press house, stainless steel tanks
and wine cellars, bottling plant, warehouse and re-
ception were built at different times and in various
styles. Nevertheless, as a result of their design and
colours they make a very pleasant overall impression.
The landscaped environs complement the friendly at-
mosphere of the winery and the adjoining wine hotel
and guesthouse. Visitors coming to view the cellars
and for wine tasting can easily reach the winery by
car or bicycle via the M1 motorway or Road 10.
Chief wine-maker kos Kamocsay was acknowl-
edged Winemaker of the Year in Britain in 1997 and
in Hungary in 1999. Hilltop Neszmly wines win sev-
eral awards and medals at competitions in Hungary
and abroad each year.

rtettk, ahogy azt a Walt Disney-filmekben, mondjuk a
Hamupipkben lttk. Eurpban persze ms a helyzet,
ott jobban ismernek minket.
A magyar szemlyi igazolvnyomba mr nincs belerva,
hogy herceg, ez 1945-ben megsznt, de ha bemutat-
kozom, mindenkinek ezt jelenti a nevem. Az els vilg-
hborig tevkenyen vettnk rszt az eurpai politika
formlsban, aztn felszmoltk a monarchikat. Most
a megvlasztott kpviselk hatroznak s nem a neme-
si csaldok. Hogy melyik a jobb? Mindkettnek van el-
nye s htrnya, azt viszont nem szabad elfelejteni, hogy

Magyarorszgon mindent megtettek azrt, hogy a nemesi
rteget eljelentktelentsk. Akik nem vndoroltak ki s
itthon vszeltk t a nehz idket, teljesen elszegnyedtek.
A tehetsgesebbek vagy akik gyerekknt jobb iskolba
tudtak jrni, most kezdenek megint feltpszkodni. Pl-

At the time of his birth in Vienna in 1936, the young
princes life promised to be straightforward and pre-
dictable. However, history as is usually the case
decided otherwise and the prince was able to return
to Hungary at the age of 55 only after large detours,
hardships and tragedies. Although conditions have
changed much, Prince Antal Esterhzy still greets us
as the master of the house at Fertd Palace.

The family had all together 30 palaces and man-
sions, including the Fertd Palace, which was
mostly used in the summer. Then the whole fam-
ily would move here with the employees, civilian
and military, some 100-150 people in all. It would
be rather difficult to determine the size of the fam-
ily, since there are three branches of counts and
one of princes. Of the latter, only I and my son are
left to claim the princely title. But about every ten
years all the Esterhzys get together, with wives
and daughters reaching more than forty. On these
occasions there is neither a pre-written script, nor
a pre-determined topic. Everything is raised, eve-
ryone has something to say and we can spend two
full days so everyone can tell about his or her life.
We often re-visit the past, but without any bitter-
ness. However, what we do raise is that Hungary
is the only country which has not given back any-
thing of the estates appropriated in 1945. The
neighbouring countries have done that and since
mainly cultivated land was involved their agricul-
ture is working far better than ours.
When I lived in the US the name Esterhzy didnt
mean much to the Americans. Then when they re-
alised who I was they exclaimed: Oh, the prince!
What they had in mind was a character in a Walt
Disney creation, say in Cinderella. Of course, its
different in Europe. We are better known here.
Prince is no longer included in my Hungarian
identity card. That stopped in 1945, but when I
introduce myself my name means that to every-
one. We actively took part in shaping European
politics up to World War I, then the monarchies
were done away with. Now its elected represent-
atives who make decisions and not members of
the nobility. Which is better? Both have their ad-
vantages and disadvantages. Yet, you shouldnt
forget that seven monarchies still exist in Europe
and they are operating well.
In Hungary everything was done to make
the nobility insignificant. Those who
didnt emigrate and had to tide over hard
times at home became utterly impover-
ished. The more talented or those who were
able to attend better schools are beginning
to get back on their feet again. For exam-
ple, Pter who is a writer, or Marci who has
become a football player they have done
well choosing a profession they succeed in
and which we can be proud of.

My father was the second son in the fam-
ily, but since his brother, Pl Esterhzy,
who was convicted in the Mindszenty
trial, died without a male heir, the title of
prince passed to me. My father was killed
in 1944, so there was no head of the fam-
ily for a long time. I survived the siege near
Heroes Square in Budapest. After the war
the Department of State Security began
investigating our family and my mother,
who was twice called to 60 Andrssy Av-
enue, the headquarters of State Security,
was treated very cruelly. That was when
our friends including the Swiss ambassa-
dor who was close to us started saying it
was time for us to leave. At the beginning
of 1948 my mother and I crossed the border
on foot, but I dont remember exactly how.
The journey was organised by the Swiss.
I first went to school in Austria, then we em-
igrated to Belgium. After finishing school
I worked there for a while, then went to

1991-ben ltogattam vissza elszr Magyarorszgra, egy
12 ves gyerek szkincsvel. desanymmal mg ma-
gyarul beszltem, de rajta kvl egszen 1991-ig nem
volt kivel magyarul trsalognom. A szakkifejezsek nem
jutnak eszembe, meg aztn a magyar nyelv is megvlto-
zott 42 v alatt. Egy ideig a bartaim segtettek, kijavtot-
tk a hibimat, s mostanra mr boldogulok valahogy.
A rendszervlts olyan vratlanul rt minket is, hogy
nem voltunk felkszlve arra, hogy ilyen korn vissza-
trhetnk az orszgba.
A fiam 22 ves, Skciba jr egyetemre, jvre vgez. Nmet-
orszgban szletett, ott is ntt fel s br nagyon rdekl-
dik Magyarorszg irnt sajnos mr nem tud magyarul.

Kulturlis tevkenysgekkel tltm a napjaimat, nagyon
elfoglalt vagyok, sokkal inkbb, mint akkor, amikor mg
aktvan dolgoztam. De nagy rmmel csinlom, minden
rdekel, ami a zenvel, kultrval, trtnelemmel kapcso-
latos s most azt csinlhatom, amihez igazn kedvem van.
Budapesten lakunk, de nyron sok idt tltnk itt Fertdn,
pont gy, mint gyerekkoromban, amikor mg a nagyszle-
im ltek itt, s nluk nyaraltam. A kastly egyetlen bejelen-
tett lakja vagyok, van egy ktszobs lakosztlyunk. A he-
lyiek kzl mindenki ismer, nemcsak a kastlyon keresztl,
hanem azrt is, mert a krnykbeliek sei mind valamilyen
kapcsolatban voltak az Esterhzyakkal.
Hogy mirt jttem vissza? Mert a Szzat gy rja el. Ersen
ktdm az orszghoz s ezzel mindannyian gy vagyunk.
Magyarorszgnak olyan vonzereje van, hogy az ember nem
tud sokig tvol maradni. Mg ha ki is vndorlunk s kl-
fldn ptjk fel az egzisztencinkat, ha ott van a tulajdon-
kppeni otthonunk, valahogy akkor is visszavgyunk Ma-
gyarorszgra. Az elmlt fl vszzad sok nehzsget hozott
s sok idbe kerl, amg ezek helyrejnnek, de itt rezzk
igazn itthon magunkat.

the United States from where I was sent to
the London office of an international com-
pany. I worked in marketing and foreign
sales. That lasted some ten years and then
I joined the French subsidiary of Generali
Insurance Company and was sent to East
Asia, where I was developing the network
in Singapore for several years.
I first visited Hungary in 1991 with the vo-
cabulary of a 12-year-old child. I spoke with
my mother in Hungarian, but apart from
her there was no one for me to converse
with in the language prior to 1991. Techni-
cal terms didnt come to my mind and also
Hungarian had changed in 42 years. My
friends helped me for some time, correct-
ing my mistakes and by now I can more
or less get by. The impact of the political
changes reached us so unexpectedly that
we werent prepared for returning to Hun-
gary so soon.
My son is 22, he goes to university in Scot-
land and graduates next year. He was
born in Germany and was brought up
there. Although hes really interested in
Hungary, unfortunately he doesnt speak
Hungarian.
the present
I spend my days involved in cultural activi-
ties. Im very busy, much more so than when
I was actively working, but Im very pleased
about it. I am interested in everything relat-
ing to music, culture and history, and now
I can do what I really feel like. We live in
Budapest but spend much time in Fertd
in the summer, just like in my childhood
when my grandparents still lived here and I
spent my holidays with them. I am the only
registered resident in the palace, where we
have a two-room apartment. All the locals
know me not only because of the palace,
but also since their ancestors all had some
kind of connection with the Esterhzies.
Why did I come back? Because its pre-
scribed in Vrsmartys Appeal, our second
national anthem. I am strongly attached
to the country and we all feel the same.
Hungary has such a draw that you cannot
stay away for long. Even if you emigrate and
establish your existence abroad and your
actual home is there, you still somehow
have a longing for Hungary. The past half
century has brought much hardship and it
takes a lot of time for matters to be set right,
but this is where we really feel at home.

Wall and floor tiles occupy more and more places in homes and
besides their traditional use such as in kitchens, bathrooms,
passages and terraces these become more and more popular
in sitting-rooms as well.
The reason for this is that extremely unique and exclusive
effect can be achieved on walls by applying large size - 20x40
cm, 25x40 cm and 25x50 cm tiles looking more and more

Malv has increased the free weight allowance on checked-
in luggage by three kilograms, but at the same time it has
introduced zero tolerance on excess luggage. Accordingly,
each passenger travelling on Malv economy class (except for

luggage without any charge, but a surcharge has to be paid for
luggage exceeding this limit. The baggage weight allowance for

young Hungarian violinist Edvin Marton arrived in

The popular musician won the contest as a member

and figure skating Olympic and world champion
Yevgeny Plushenko. The enormous show attracted
nearly 129 million people from 43 countries to

Hungarian to win the song contest, an achievement

In response to the latest challenges of the air industry, Malv is
restructuring its fleet. It is gradually changing its regional fleet
for Q400 turboprops manufactured by Bombardier Aerospace.
Under the terms of the letter of intent signed by the two companies,
in stage one of the programme four pre-owned Q400 turboprop
aircraft ideal for short- and medium-haul operations, quiet,
fast, efficient and environment friendly will join the Hungarian
national fleet from the 2008/2009 winter schedule, to be followed
by four new models coming into service from 2012. Malv, which
thus becomes the 25
th
operator of the worlds most advanced
turboprop, has also placed options on a further four aircraft for
2013. Together with the four aircraft entering into service in 2008,
the number of Malv turboprops may rise to 12 within five years.
The Q400 turboprop, optimized for short-haul services, is the
most advantageous solution offering the perfect balance of
passenger comfort and economical operation with the lowest
possible environmental impact. With a maximum cruise speed of
667 km/h, the Q400 turboprop will arrive at destinations only a
few minutes later than at present. The Q400 comes equipped with
the superlative Active Noise and Vibration Suppression (ANVS)
System, which is particularly important for customer comfort.

NEW QUEUE MANAGEMENT SERVICE
COMMENCES OPERATION AT BUDAPEST
AIRPORT
Budapest Airport (BA) is expanding its terminal services with
queue managers at Ferihegy Airport during the summer peak
season. One of the main tasks of the youths performing the
service, dressed in red T-shirts, is to manage and control the
queues forming in front of passenger security checkpoints. The
queue managers ensure that families with small children, senior
citizens, disabled passengers and persons for whom queuing is
especially uncomfortable are escorted to the front of the queue.
In addition, they check boarding passes and whether passengers
have packed liquids in their hand baggage into a plastic bag, in
accordance with security regulations. The latter is especially
important as 8.5 tons of liquids are confiscated from passengers
every week at Budapest Airport. Passengers are only allowed to
take small quantities of liquids on board aircraft. Liquids can only
be carried in containers of maximum 100 milliliters each. Small
jars, boxes and containers must be packed into a transparent
and re-sealable plastic bag with a maximum volume of 1 liter.
Passengers must present the plastic bag to passenger security
staff during screening. Liquids that do not endanger aviation may
be carried in the hold baggage without restriction.

Wings for Life. Their works are being auctioned online
and the proceeds will help the foundation, which has
the ambitious but not unattainable aim of ensuring
that no one should be confined to a wheelchair
for the rest of his or her life following an accident.

The works of art were assessed by a jury of three
teams, including Pter Besenyei, the Hungarian
Institute for Culture and Fine Arts Directorate, as well
as representatives of Red Bull. They selected the helmet
painted by artist Lszl Tart of the Herend porcelain
factory for Pter Besenyei to wear at the
Red Bull Air Race on 20 August.
Tart, 29, has been working at Herend
since 1993 and is aiming to become
a master of the craft. His employers
acknowledged his skill with a professional
award in 2006. He worked on the helmet
creating bird wing patterns symbolising
flying for three weeks.

a 60 ves gyermekvast
The Childrens Railway, one of Budapests special
sights, winds its way through the Buda Hills, the
capitals most popular area for walks. The first stretch
of the railway opened 60 years ago on 31 July, and the
entire 11.2 kilometre line between Szchenyi Hill
and Hvsvlgy was completed in two years.
Travelling on the narrow gauge railway clattering
through the picturesque scenery of forests, fields
and hillsides is a great experience, especially in a
nostalgia carriage pulled by a steam engine. Yet,
the unique charm of the Childrens Railway is the
fact that 10-14 year old children switch the points
and signals, waive off the trains and check the
tickets. This is no joke it really is the youngsters
who manage and operate the service, with the
exception, naturally, of driving the engines and
performing the stationmasters duties. Although
unseen by passengers, the children record every
occasion when they switch the points as well as
all other operational services. They are perfectly
familiar with the operation of the equipment,
which itself is noteworthy from the aspect of
railway history. Hence, this is no game but a
responsible service, and it is precisely that which
makes travelling on this railway an unforgettable
experience, since the enthusiastic attention of the
railway children is at least as inspiring as the
beautiful scenery and the fresh air.
The Childrens Railway bore the name of Pioneers
Railway for 50 years and only members of the
pioneer organisation who excelled at school could
join the staff. The current name dates from the
1989-90 changes, but the paintings and mosaics on
the walls of the stations still show what a pioneers
life was like in the old days.
The Childrens Railway runs throughout the year, every
day except Monday. It can be reached by taking tram No.
56 from Moscow Square to its terminus, from where it is
a ten-minute walk to the Hvsvlgy station.
