Estimate Decimal Multiplication

Estimate 6 x 2.8 Estimate 10 x 5.3

First, round 2.8 to the nearest whole First, round 5.3 to the nearest whole
number. number.

Then, rewrite the problem and multiply. Then, rewrite the problem and multiply.

6 x 3 = 18 10 x 5 =50

Estimate the product of 28.3 x 3.2

In the above product, the numbers can be rounded as given below.

28.3 -----> 30

3.2 -----> 3

Now, the above product will become 30 x 3 = 90.

Multiply decimal by multiple of 10’s

Use this short trick:

Move the decimal point to the right as many places as there are zeros in 10 or its multiples.

10 × 0 . 4 9 = 4.9

Then, move the decimal point one step to the right (10 has one zero).

1000 × 0.76 = 760

After that, move the decimal point 3 steps to the right since 1000 has 3 zeros. Fill the empty
cup by ‘0’.
