Typ. Slow Firing Alkali Boilout

The document outlines the steps for performing a slow firing alkali boil out of a boiler. This includes checking equipment is ready, completing refractory and insulation work, clearing debris, making chemicals available, gradually raising steam pressure to 5 atm for 12 hours while monitoring parameters, and slowly increasing pressure over three stages of boil out until oil content decreases below 10 PPM. Safety precautions should be taken during the process.

Slow Firing Alkali Boil out

1. Check the boiler erection is completed with all assemblies including drum internals, valves, fittings & necessary instrumentation. 2. Boiler auxiliaries such as ID fan, temporary feed pumps should have been trial run & made ready for operation.

3. Ensure the flue gas circuit duct erection & welding completion. 4. Ensure the flue gas duct supports are provided as per drgs.

5. Ensure temporary water level gauge glass fixing. 6. Ensure temporary arrangement for monitoring furnace temperature during slow firing & alkali boil out.

7. Check if all the refractory work is completed. 8. Check & ensure the completion of insulation lagging in boiler pressure parts at the essential places to ensure the safety.

9. Check all scaffolding, temporary supports, debris are cleared.

10. Check suitable fire fighting equipments such as CO2 or foam type fire extinguishers, sand buckets etc. are available at suitable convenient places.

11. Check sufficient quantity of chemicals are available. Based on the water volume of the boiler, the chemicals required can be estimated. If water volume of the boiler is Q m3, each chemical required will be 4x Q [Link] same quantity of chemicals will be required for each boil out. 12. For alkali boilout Sodium Carbonate & Trisodium Phosphate are used.

13. Prepare 20% concentrated solution of the chemicals separately in a drum & the solution is charged into the boiler through the nozzles( either auxiliary steam top nozzle or Air vent nozzle) into the shell/drum manually by means of funnel.

14. After the addition of chemicals in to the required quantity, the nozzles are covered with the cover flange & fill up water to the normal operating level.

15. Start the slow firing with fire woods/ kiln exhaust gas & maintain the furnace [Link] per the standard procedure & raise the steam pressure gradually to 5 atm. & maintain the pressure for minimum period of 12 hours. 16. Tighten all glands & flange joints.

17. Samples to be taken every 02 (TWO) hours & analysis is to be done to determine the followings; a. PH Value. [Link]. [Link]. d. Oil. 20. Alkali boil out will be terminated once oil content in the boiler water comes down to less than 10 PPM, where there is no facility is available for checking oil content, the alkali boil out shall be done for 03 stages.

21. Ensure the pressure is maintained in the boiler for each stage alkali boilout as follows: Stages I II III Pressure (In Kg/cm2) 05 07 10 Duration (In Hrs.) 12 12 12

22. Ensure the pressure of the boiler is raised gradually for alkali boil out. 23. Ensure the cleaning of the boiler is done after alkali boil out as per the standard procedure.

24. Ensure the safety precautions are taken care during alkali boil out.

**STANDARD PROCEDURE FOR SLOW FIRING**

1. Heat gradually up to 110 deg.C & hold at this temperature for six hours. 2. Raise the temperature at the rate of 10 deg.C / Hour up to 550 deg.C & hold at this temperature for 06 hours.

3. After this the furnace / ABC duct can be cooled.
