THE .COM REVOLUTION

This revolution needs no introduction. The web called the World Wide Web has spread throughout our planet and has converted it into a global village. It has , in a short span , become a one-stop source for all sorts of entertainment , media and information.

HISTORY OF INTERNET

The present day Internet as we see has come into being from past technologies like the ARPANet and NSFNet .
In 1960s ,Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) or the US Department of Defense linked together mainframe computers to form a communications network.

The agencys main objective was to create a communication system that could survive a nuclear attack or natural disaster

National Science Foundation (NSF) created a new highspeed network NSFNet which fully replaced ARPANet.

The Growth of internet was fueled by purchase of personal computers and the growing demand for anytime, anywhere information access.

A PEEP INTO ITS WORKING

Every computer connected to the Internet is assigned a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address. When you click on a link, your browser sends out a request that is addressed to the website that houses the content you want. Routers along the way read the data packets address and relay it along the best route available. When the data packet arrives at the website, the server reads the request and sends the requested page back to your computer The data packet is routed back to you and your browser interprets the content and displays the page for you

THE PLETHORA OF INFORMATION

The internet offers a plethora of information. Now it has become the favourite source for news , images and information related to anything. Websites like Wikipedia serve the purpose of an encyclopedia, providing detailed information on almost all topics Yahoo! News,CNN.com are some of the most popular news-sites on the WWW. Traditional sources like dictionaries, encylopedias are losing out to the free and easily accessible websites on the internet.

THE ENTERTAINMENT FACTOR

This factor is really huge. For it has in its grip all people-literate or illiterate. Internet for sure has emerged as the ultimate source of entertainment.

Video-sharing websites like YouTube and Metacafe and gaming sites like Zapak.com are making people addicted to the stuff they provide.

INTERNET AS AN ACTIVISM TOOL

The Internet has proved itself as the new tool for journalism and activism. Wikileaks began publishing secret diplomatic cables related to the US and many other countries. The internet activist Julian Assange was the brain behind this website of exposes.

The internet, through blogs and social networking sites, served as an important tool for rebels for mobilizing support of the people in recent uprisings in Egypt and Libya. The Facebook group set up to protest at Khaled Said's death is "liked" by nearly 600,000 people and was a key organising centre for the current protests.

SOCIAL NETWORKING

Social Networking Websites like Facebook , Twitter, Orkut have revolutionized the way people communicate. Social networking now dwarfs online games, email and search as the number one activity A social network service essentially consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services.

THE BROWSER WAR

Popular Browsers available today are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari. There has been an erosion of Internet Explorer's market share since 2003 by a collection of emerging browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera

The browser war saw a new phase when this March , Internet Explorer and Firefox launched their latest versions namely IE9 and Firefox 4.0, with Firefox beating IE9 in the number of downloads. Google Chrome 12 is coming soon.

Android Mobile Devices witness a browser war between popular browsers like Opera Mini and Firefox For Android.

THE PROBLEMS IT HAS BROUGHT

e-mail spam: One of the annoying realities of today's Internet is the prevalence of "spam" e-mail. Almost everyone is getting these unsolicited e-mails, most containing advertisements for goods and services we probably don't want.

Privacy Concerns: On the Internet your privacy is always at stake, for there are no fully effective methods to deal with privacy invasion. The popularity of Social Networking sites has just increased this risk. Piracy has become almost unstoppable.
Online Frauds ,Hate Sites, fake profiles , obscene content are other problems involving this medium.
