WHAT IS INTERNET
 Internet is called the network of networks. It is a global
communication system that links together thousands of individual
networks. In other words, internet is a collection of interlinked
computer networks, connected by copper wires, fiber-optic cables,
wireless connections, etc. As a result, a computer can virtually
connect to other computers in any network. These connections allow
users to interchange messages, to communicate in real time (getting
instant messages and responses), to share data and programs and to
access limitless information.
EVOLUTION

 The concept of Internet was originated in 1969 and has undergone


several technological & Infrastructural changes as discussed below:
 The origin of Internet devised from the concept of Advanced
Research Project Agency Network (ARPANET).
 ARPANET was developed by United States Department of
Defense.
 Basic purpose of ARPANET was to provide communication among
the various bodies of government.
 Initially, there were only four nodes, formally called Hosts.

 In 1972, the ARPANET spread over the globe with 23 nodes


located at different countries and thus became known as Internet.
 By the time, with invention of new technologies such as TCP/IP
protocols, DNS, WWW, browsers, scripting languages etc. Internet
provided a medium to publish and access information over the web.
ADVANTAGES
 Internet allows us to communicate with the people sitting at
remote locations. There are various apps available on the wed
that uses Internet as a medium for communication. One can
find various social networking sites such as:
 Facebook
 Twitter
 Yahoo
 Google+
 Flickr
 Orkut

 One can surf for any kind of information over the internet.
Information regarding various topics such as Technology,
Health & Science, Social Studies, Geographical Information,
Information Technology, Products etc can be surfed with help
of a search engine.
 Apart from communication and source of information, internet also
serves a medium for entertainment. Following are the various modes
for entertainment over internet.
 Online Television
 Online Games
 Songs
 Videos
 Social Networking Apps
 Internet allows us to use many services like:
 InternetBanking
 Matrimonial Services
 Online Shopping
 Online Ticket Booking
 Online Bill Payment
 Data Sharing
 E-mail

 Internet provides concept of electronic commerce, that allows the


business deals to be conducted on electronic systems
DISADVANTAGES
 There are always chances to loose personal information such as
name, address, credit card number. Therefore, one should be very
careful while sharing such information. One should use credit
cards only through authenticated sites.
 Another disadvantage is the spamming. Spamming corresponds
to the unwanted e-mails in bulk. These e-mails serve no purpose
and lead to obstruction of entire system.
 Virus can easily be spread to the computers connected to
internet. Such virus attacks may cause your system to crash or
your important data may get deleted.
 Also a biggest threat on internet is pornography. There are many
pornographic sites that can be found, letting your children to use
internet which indirectly affects the children healthy mental life.
 There are various websites that do not provide the authenticated
information. This leads to misconception among many people.
WEB BROWSERS
 Web Browser is software Application.
 It is used to locate, retrieve and also display
content on the world wide web(www).
 Web Browsers are basically used to explore the
internet.
 More than one WEB BROWSERS can installed
in a single computer.
TYPES OF WEB BROWSERS
TEXT WEB BROWSERS
 A WEB BROWSER that displays only text based
information is known as TEXT WEB BROWSER.
 For Eg. LYNX which provides access to the internet in
text mode only.
GRAPHICAL WEB BROWSER
 A WEB BROWSER that supports both text and graphic
information is known as GRAPHICAL WEB BROWSER.
 Major Graphical Web Browsers are Internet Explorer,
Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera Mini etc.
 The first Graphical Web Browser was NCSA MOSAIC
National Centre for Supercomputing Applications.

NETSCAPE

 NETSCAPE was introduced on 4 April 1994.


 NETSCAPE browser was once dominant but lost to internet
explorer and other competitions in the so called first browser war.
 Market share fallen from more than 90% in the mid 1990’s to less
than 15 in 2006.
INTERNET EXPLORER

 It is a product of MICROSOFT
 This was introduced in 1995 along with Windows 95 launch and it
has passed NETSCAPE popularity in 1998.
 It was once the most widely used WEB BROWSER attaining a peak
of about 95% usage share by 2003.
 Usage share declined with the launch of Firefox(2004) and
Chrome(2008).
MOZILLA FIREFOX

 It was a released in 2004 and grown to be the second most popular


web browser.
GOOGLE CHROME

 This web browser was developed by GOOGLE in 2005.


SAFARI

 This WEB BROWSER was developed by


AP APPLE Corporation in 2003.

OPERA

 It is smaller in size but faster than most web browsers,yet it is full


featured.
 It includes a TABBED Browsing PAGE ZOOMING and MOUSE
creature features.
SEARCH ENGINE
 A search engine is a software system that is designed to
carry out web searches (Internet searches), which
means to search the World Wide Web in a systematic
way for particular information specified in a textual 
web search query. 
 A search engine is a website that provides the required
data on specific topics.
 When you type any term in search bar then the search
engine will look for match keywords from websites all
over the web.
