 In the days of manual patch panels, each
exchange was given a name such as Bronx,
Redwood, Swift, Downtown, Main and so on.
The first 2-digits of a telephone number were
derived from the first 2-letters of the exchange
name.

Example:
BRONX - B=2;R=7

270-0000 to 279-9999

Using this system, a 7-digit telephone number

can accommodate 100, 000 telephone
number.
