Power travels from the power plant to your house
through a system called the Power grid.

It consists of the 3 main stages:- ( V = Volts)

1) Generation: 26,000 V

2) Transmission
- Primary Transmission
- Secondary Transmission

3) Distribution
- Primary Distribution (Level-1)
- Primary Distribution (Level -2)
- Secondary Distribution: 415 V or 240 V (Our HOUSE)

Intro to Power Grids Work...
Power plants are located far from load
centres. (eg : cities / houses)

Electricityproduced by generators are

actually at lower voltages.

Power needs to travel long distances over

transmission lines to reach cities.

To do so, the voltage of electricity must be

raised.
2. Generation

Electrical power starts at the power plant.

All types of the power plant consists of:

A) GENERATOR

B) TURBINE
- which is driven by :
i) water in hydroelectric dam.
ii) steam generated in thermal power
plant fired with coal or natural gas.
Generation

the turbine &
generator!)
Generation

320 MW Roxburgh dam, New Zealand

3. Transmission

Electricpower leaves the generator and enters

a transmission substation at the power plant.

A substation is a part of an electrical

generation, transmission, and distribution
system.

4. Distribution

For power to be useful in a

community, it comes off the
transmission grid and the voltage is
stepped-down to the distribution grid.

Power supply distributed according to

the requirements at the industrial /
residential buildings via transformers,
panel & poles.
