Largest internal organ
Metabolic organ
Types of Liver Cells

1. Stellate Cells

2. Kupffer Cells

3. Sinusoidal
Endothelial Cells

4. Hepatocytes
Types of Liver Cells

1. Stellate (Ito) Cells

The main function of

Stellate cells is to store vitamin
A (Retinol).
Types of Liver Cells

2. Kupffer Cells

The Main function is to

protect the liver from
bacterias, harmful
substance that are able to
escape from the protection
of stomach and intestine.
Types of Liver Cells
Types of Liver Cells

3. Endothelia cell

The main function is

to control which
materials or nutrients are
allowed to pass from
blood vessels into the
liver through the Space
of Disse.
Types of Liver Cells

Hepatocyte
Cells
Hepatocytes

70-80% of Liver cells are

Hepatocytes.

Located in liver
The cells contain high amount of
organelles

Lots of Mitochondria

Lots of Smooth Endoplasmic

Reticulum (SER)

Nucleus, Ribosome, RER,

Golgibody, Vacuole,
Cytoskeleton, and Plasma
membrane

11 specialized organelles

No centrosome
Shape

Rectangular shape
They in one another, so the bile exists between the
gap of the two cells
Called Bile Canaliculus
How does the shape of the cell affect the function?

There is microvilli on the surface

More surface area

More organelle can stay inside

Be able to contain more mitochondria and smooth ER to do its

functions
Function

1. Digestion
- produce bile, which use for digest fats.

2. Metabolism
- The blood leaving the digestive system
need to pass through the hepatocyte
cell, so they metabolising carbohydrates,
lipids, and proteins.
Function
3. Detoxification
remove many toxin from the blood from digestive organs, for example, drugs and
alcohol.
control the amount of hormones (get rid of the hormones that the body doesnt need)
excrete very low density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol).
Function
4. Storage
- store minerals
- store and take in fatty acids

5. Production
- produce some types of important proteins
in blood
- such as Albumin
How does the
function keep
the organism
alive?

Hepatocyte cell made up 75% of the liver

mass
Blood flows
Digest food (fat, carbohydrate, protein)
Specialized organelles

1. Microvilli
. Increase surface area for
nutrients absorption

2. Bile Canaliculus
Collect and transport the bile produced
by hepatocytes.
Specialized organelles

3. Gap Junction

directly connecting two cells

together.
allows various molecules,
ions and electrical impulses
to pass through between
cells.
Specialized organelles

4. Tight Junction
Hold cells together
Limit the transport of molecules and
ions through the space between
cells.
Form protective and functional
barriers. 5. Desmosome
Help maintain the polarity of cells;.
Provide strong adhesion between
cells.
Form the adhesive bonds that
gives strength to tissues.
Hold two cells tightly
together
6. Peroxisome
Getting rid of bodys toxic
substances in the cell
Transfer hydrogen from ethanol or
alcohol molecules to oxygen
Help in reactions that produce bile
acids and cholesterol.

7. Glycogen
Maintains blood glucose levels
Diseases related and treatments

Can be many diseases related to the liver cell

Can occur from ingesting too fatty foods

From consuming too much alcohol

From hepatitis virus

Cirrhosis
Alcohol is a major factor Healthy Liver Unhealthy Liver

Developed from damaged cell

Due to the overload of alcohol
consumption
Takes time to develop
Liver Cancer
Primary liver cancer

Caused by when the cell start to grow out of control

Cause the liver to function less efficiency

Many cancer type eg: hemangioma

hepatic adenoma

Hepatorcellular

carcinoma
Cure & Treatment
No treatment that can cure liver cell that already had been

damaged.

Lifestyle changes

Take medicine

Chemotherapy

Support from the environment

Question time

1.What is the function of Stellate cells.

2. What substance is used to digest fat

3. What are the organelles related to the

performance of Hepatocytes function and how?

4. What is the function of Gap Junction?

5.What is the major factor of Cirrhosis?
