By: dr. Susianti, M.Sc.

Organization of
Organism
Histology

Histo: tissue
Logos: study
is the study of the tissues of the body and
how these tissue are arranged to
constitute organ
as a subdiscipline of anatomy
Goals of Histology
Understanding tissue structure at levels not
visible to the unaided eye.
Understanding the relationship between tissue
structure and function.
Establishing a basis for learning histopatology
the relationship between abnormal tissue structure
and functional defects.
Providing a basis for treating diseased and
injured tissues.
Tissue
is a complex assemblage of cells and cell
products having a common function.
4 basic tissues, according their cells and
cell products:
Epithelial
Connective
Muscular
Nervous
Histologic Methods
Microscopy
microscopic analysis
2 main groups of microscopy:
light microscopy: conventional, phase
contrast, differential interference, polarizing,
confocal, and fluorescence
electron microscopy
Tissue preparation for microscopy
sectioning translucent staining
Histologic Methods, cont
Cell, tissue, and organ culture
observation of structural and functional effects
of certain treatments without interference from
regulatory mechanisms present in intact
organism
Cell Fractionation
mechanically breaking cells and separating
their components by centrifugation
Histochemistry
