ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

• The endocrine system includes the endocrine

glands and their hormones.

• The function of the endocrine system is to secrete

hormones into the bloodstream.
Glands
ENDOCRINE GLANDS
 The Endocrine Glands are the organs of the
Endocrine System.
 Endocrine glands are called ductless glands.
 They produce and secrete (release) hormones.

• Release hormones directly into the bloodstream.

• Blood transports hormones throughout the body.
• Each hormone acts on only a certain kind of cell
called target cell.

SYSTEM
GLANDS WHAT IT REGULATES
“Master Gland” that regulates all other glands, also releases growth
Pituitary
hormone
Thyroid Metabolism; body heat; bone growth

Parathyroid Use of calcium and phosphorusA

Hypothalamus Links nervous system to endocrine system

Response in emergency or stressful situations, metabolism, blood pressure,

Adrenal
salt balance

Pancreas Blood sugar

Ovaries Production of eggs; female characteristics

Testes Production of sperm; male characteristics

Thymus Parts of the immune system

HOW DO YOU THINK
THE ENDOCRINE
SYSTEM GET THEIR
JOBS?
HORMONES!
Hormones are chemical messengers that are
secreted (released) from glands into the
blood and affect cells in another part of the
body.
Hormones only work on certain cells, called
target cells.
TARGET CELLS
The target cells have special receptors that
“recognize” the hormones and allow them to
influence that cell.
WHAT CONTROLS THE HORMONES?

 External stimuli
- By the way of nerves from the
sensory organs in the nervous system.

 Internal stimuli
- By way of nerves and other hormones from
inside the body

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM CONTROL
2 Types of feedback mechanisms
1. Positive Feedback
- the effector bolster of a process bolsters the
stimulus, which increases the production of
hormones
2. Negative Feedback
-when enough hormone is in the body, the body
stops producing the hormone until it is needed
again.

IMPORTANCE OF
ENDOCRINE
SYSTEM
IMPORTANCE OF ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
The Endocrine System regulates, coordinates and
controls:
 Growth and development
 Male and female development
 How your body uses energy
 Levels of salts and sugars in your blood
 The amount (volume) of fluid in your body
 Appetite
 Many other body functions
