May consist lightweight aggregates are used in ordinary concrete of course aggregates and sand, clay, clinker, crushed stone. Methods of preparation of lightweight concrete
Preparation of porous concrete.
Without providing concrete smoother(rough concrete). Providing lightweight aggregate concrete. Preparation of porous concrete Lightweight concrete obtained by inserting gas bubbles or air into the mixture of plastic cement(mixed with fine sand). Lightweight concrete did not contain stones included as porous motar. Preparation of concrete without the smooth(Rough concrete):- Lightweight concrete such as obtained when the fine aggregate(sand) not used and the concrete mix of cement, water and course aggregate. Preparation of Light weight Aggregate concrete :- Aggregate used for light weight concrete weight less than usual rock aggregate. Natural light weight aggregates are less prefered over artificial aggregates. Types of aggregate decides the density of concrete. The main purpose of the concrete requirement are :- Has sufficient strength. Have a low density. Have low drying shrinkage(to avoid cracking/rift). The above factor depends on :- Types of aggregate. The mixture. The method and techniques of preservation. Mix design of LWC Difficult to decide water–cement ratio, due to variable water absorption by aggregates. Pre-saturation of aggregate is done to avoid excessive absorption of water by aggregates. In rare cases aggregates are coated with bitumen to overcome the water absorption problem. Advantages Reduce the load of the building. Easy to handle and reduce the cost of transportation and handling. Comparatively more durable. Improves the workability. Disadvantages Very sensitive with water content in the mixture. Mixing time is longer than conventional concrete to assure proper mixing. Difficult to place and finish because of porosity and angularity of the aggregate. Light weight concrete are porous and shows poor resistance. Application of lightweight of concrete Use it where ease in filling and carrying is important. It is used in the construction of stairs, windows, garden walls, balconies, etc. Nowadays with the advancement of technology light weight concrete expands it uses . In large buildings also this is used in the construction of partition walls. Conclusion This density of concrete is found to decrease with the increase in percentage replacement of natural aggregate.
This type of concrete can be utilized in wall panels of
non load bearing type for use in precast buildings References Erdoğan T.Y., Materials of Construction, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, 2002 Mindess, S., Young, J.F., Darwin D., Concrete, 2nd ed., Prentice-Hall, New Jersey, 2003.
