Abstract
Ergonomic evaluation and redesign of series of bicycles for children and 7-14 years old. Total of
1247 individuals were involved in the study.

The study was commissioned by major Greek Bicycle manufacturer for gaining competitive
advantage.

Virtual Modeling Techniques and method of Principal Component Analysis are employed to
perform the study.
Methodology
Problem statement which includes target population definition, task analysis and identification
of critical design and anthropometric dimensions.

Collection and analysis of anthropometric data and selection of representative case studies.

Investigation of relevant case studies and analysis of corresponding results.

Guidelines for Reference Posture
The child should be leaning forward slightly, 15 degrees in respect to vertical axis. This results in
increase in respiratory volume.

The knee angle (between knee and abdomen) should not be greater than 150 degree when the
pedal is in bottom dead center and no less than 65 degree when pedal is in top position

The arms should be slightly bent in the elbows, 20 degree to reduce the possible effect of
vibrations to the shoulder
Anthropometric Dimensions
The thigh length t and lower leg length l and the foot height f.
Refer to dimension B and C of bicycle

Chest height c and abdomen height ab that relates to A and D

of bicycle.

The upper arm length a, forearm length fa and the hand length
h, relates to A and D.

Inseam length E
Population Categorization
Cases Under Study
There were 9 cases which were taken under consideration and all these were in the 120-140 cm
height range.
Model Creation
There mannequin were created by NexGen Ergonomic-Mannequin software.
Model Comparison

The model on the left is for small children and large on the right side. For height 120-140 cm Size 20
Proposed Model
The research focused on five critical bicycle dimensions

1. Saddle-Handlebar horizontal distance

2. Saddle Height and its adjustment range
3. Handlebar height and its adjustment range
4. Handlebar Width
5. Vertical distance from saddle to the ground
Conclusion
The research paper aimed at developing a model to prove that the bicycle fit
depend greatly on the height of the person and the anthropometric dimensions
of the individual rather than the general belief of age being the deciding factor.
