The first Thanksgiving Day
• The first Thanksgiving celebration was in 1621. It was originally a
celebration to give thanks for a good harvest.
• About one hundred English men, women and children sailed to
America on the ship The Mayflower in 1620.Life was very difficult
at first and a lot of them died. The local Native Americans were very
friendly and they taught them how to grow and cook new types of
food
• In the autumn, the settlers celebrated their first year in the new
country. They invited the Native Americans to their celebration
because they wanted to thank them. They cooked a big meal with
local food and the first Thanksgiving lasted three days.

• In 1863, president Abraham Lincoln made
Thanksgiving Day in November a national holiday.

• Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the


fourth Thursday of November.

Christmas shopping season. The shops are full of people buying Christmas presents
for their families and friends.
