The Early Grades Reading

Assessment (EGRA):
An Overview
What is EGRA?
• a diagnostic instrument designed to
assess the foundation skills for literacy
acquisition of grades 1 to 3 pupils.
Why focus on early grades?
• The ability to read and understand a simple
text is one of the most fundamental skills a
child can learn.

• Learning to read with understanding and at

a sufficient rate is essential for learning to
read well.
• Acquiring literacy becomes more difficult as
students grow older.

• Children who do not learn to read in the first

few grades are unable to learn the other
subject areas in the upper grades.
(learn to read; read to learn)
• Children who can’t read in the upper grades
are more likely to repeat and eventually drop
out.
